Aion is in direct competition with WoW and LotRO rather than AoC and Eve online.
how do you figure. Aion seems to be more of a PvP RvR game with PvE tacked like AoC and WAR while LoTRO is just the opposite. I am sure LoTRO may lose a few players but to me it looks as if WaR and AoC will be hit the hardest of any games. WoW can afford to lose a million or so with no financial worries but if AoC or WAR lose a 50 or 100 K it is a huge deal from my point of view. LoTRO while losing 100K and I predict it will not even lose 1/4 of that would be hurt. But even in a worst case scenario for LoTRO it would be the virtual deathblow that it would be to AoC and WAR which are already struggling it seems. Eve is Eve, nothing in the foreseeable future is going to affect it.
very simple, Aion is more directed towards a younger population, same as WoW and LotRO and that alone puts it in a diffrent league than AoC and EvE which have a more adult player base. game play features doesnt matter.
you have got to be kidding me, AoC has absolutly the least mature community I have ever played in. a brief visit to the official forums is all it takes to prove that. Like the poster above me pointed out , AoCs general chat cahnnel make WoW's barrens chat look like National Public Radio
nop, not the AoC i play.
im one of those you are calling immature, i am mature and absolutely not kidding you.
Then you must play different AoC than the rest of us.
I have to agree with Jackdog. I've never seen more immature community in an MMO. AoC players average age must be something like 14-15 years old.
Some people seem to think digital boobies and fatalities attract adults, when it's actually quite the opposite. Digital boobies and blood fatalities are exactly what KIDS like, not adults. The more "adult" a game is, the more kids wanna play it. It's just a marketing move by Funcom to get all the immature kids to play.
if you mean by "US" people who actually dont play AoC or those who played for a couple of hours and think they can give the ultimate veteran advice based on that then thats true, we are on diffrent games.

Don't know what server you are on, but the people that I encounter in AoC are usually really mature, and cool people. I would take my AoC servers community over any community I experienced in WAR or WoW or Darkfall.

i played EvE for a few years, and im still playing it, there is no global chat, but each zone/system has its local channel open for all who are there, EvE player base being mature (avg30+) is a well established fact, however, you can see every kind of talk on local chats, yet nobody ever claimed that EvEs player base are immature or that the chat is broken or that CCP fails... cause everybody knows that it is pure nonsense.
mature players also use curse words, bad words and act childish from time to time, and that is no evidence for or against a community by any means.
this : "i heard such xxx words on global therfore the community is immature" is an urban myth which needs to be debunked, and a useless argument.
there will always be someone saying something that someone else doesnt like on a global uncensored channel, and there will always be and at any moment two rival factions/guilds/groups/players swearing to each other on global...
it usually tuns out that people who are complaining about global chat are the same ones who are very active spamming it, but when they get served by others then they satrt complaining about how unfair it is.
there are also those who are used to chat with kiddos on other games where they used to be top dogs, but when they switch to a game where there are actual adults on chat who can give them hell if they start jumping around, then they start complaining about how unfair global chat is.
I am not currently playing AOC but I left right before the big patch and I have to say they are doing great with AOC. I am waint for the expanction to lookk at it. But compairing AOC and AION wont go over very well. Most people that play AOC is because of the lore. They don't want fantisy foo foo. As for closing the doors. Highly unlikly.

Totally disagree. That fatalities and boobs are close to the scene of Conan lore. If you ever read any of the Conan stories you know that some endings are pretty brutal while the women in the stories are thought of as (what's the word I'm looking for) more sexual.
I've spent PLENTY of time in Tortage and in 8 months I've been back I've only seen 2-3 times a female character in game running around with no shirt on.
As for community, well all that crap that goes on in global is nothing compared to the people I group with. Once or twice in the 8 months have I grouped with a total idiot, asshat or whatever you want to call them. I do a lot of PUGs. My favorite community was DDO, but AoC community once you get off GLOBAL the people are nice helpful and know how to play the game.
EDIT: and to the OP, I have zero desire to play Aion. I'll be in AoC and LOTRO for awhile.
So you think it fits, having complex politics in the world of Hyborea, the world of Conan the Barbarian? Perhaps you want corporations and a complex banking system as well?
Totally disagree. That fatalities and boobs are close to the scene of Conan lore. If you ever read any of the Conan stories you know that some endings are pretty brutal while the women in the stories are thought of as (what's the word I'm looking for) more sexual.
I am well aware of the amount of violence and sex in Conan books. I've read them all. My point is that they didn't add digital boobies because they wanted to stay true to Conan books, they could have done that easily even without boobs. They added digital boobies because they wanted to attract immature kids (and adults) who have never seen the real thing. It's just a marketing move, simple as that.
If they REALLY wanted kids to stay away, they would add more "boring" stuff like politics etc.
Oh and please show me one Conan book where there are random women running around with their boobs hanging out. I might have missed that one.
Frost Giants Daughter is one story where the daughter is completely naked. I believe there is other stories which slip my mind atm where the women are lightly dressed. Zenobia might be another one. Oh and Pool of the Black One.
And I disagree they sat around thinking we'll add breasts so we can attract the kids.
I don't think there was anything sinister from funcom about adding boobies and violence, it fitted the game they were createing, I don't think it was done with the intention of enticeing young teenage males however it did do that and the community and maturity suffered for it.
I wouldn't have wanted them to not cater to the ip properly though to avoid enticeing these players, they did the right thing having the violence and nudity imo even with the downside it created. What they needed was a) a more finished game to begin with as this created alot of the hate and hosility in the community and b) a large enough and well trained enough set of in game moderators who could quickly and effectivly deal with those hateful "you f*ck*ng fag" teenagers and those who exploited every chance they got.
I wouldn't want a games vision changed because of idiots and I'm glad funcom didn't, what I want is the idiots dealt with and they fell down here, we had too much moderation on the boards and not enough in game, the early customer service situation was as bad as it gets, (actually I take that back, vanguard was worse when it came to dealing with cheaters, skip 6 weeks of leveling by cheating, get a 1 week suspension and keep the character)
You think politics is a modern invention? Try reading a history book. And I wasn't saying they need to add politics. I was just using politics as an example of what kind of things attract adults. Politics -> Adults Digital boobies -> Kids
I can already see the add...
"Come to Age of Conan - Hyborean Adventures! A world of fine politics and cruel corporate take-overs! "

That's.. funny. Actually that would be much better than most AoC ads. Anyone remember that horrible "Death Has Never Looked So Hot!" ad campaign?
But seriously.. you should read a book. Politics was not invented by Bill Clinton, you know? In the world of Conan there was probably a lot of political backstabbing in the background but the reason Conan books don't talk about them much is that the books are mostly written from Conans perspective. However that doesn't mean politics didn't exist and wouldn't work in an MMO.
First of all, you don't know anything about me. For you to recommend me reading a book is so ridiculous you don't have a clue.
Second, the only books that really matter in this context, are the works of Robert E. Howard, and the world he portrays. Ultimately, they focus on quests, for revenge or treasures. They focus on adventure, battles, crumbling ruins filled with evil magic. Also the women are portrayed in a very sensual way. If you were talking about Dune or some other work with intense political background, I would agree with you. But it's Conan, the freaking barbarian!!!

Actually Age of Conan is not a game about Conan the Barbarian. It's a game about Hyboria, in the age when a barbarian called Conan was a king. Age of Conan.. get it?
Howards books represent Hyboria through the eyes of Conan. But there is probably happening a lot of things in the background, they just don't get mentioned in the books. Game designers could use common sense and imagination to add some new stuff without raping the original books.
The way I personally see it, the path Conan has chosen in the books is the path of the class BARBARIAN. There are many other classes in the AoC, each with a different story.
By the way.. you probably don't fully know what the word "politics" means which is why we are having this ridiculous discussion.
If you don't like books, try Wikipedia.
By your logic, you could make a game about Indiana Jones and base it on lawyers, since of course there definately must have been lawyers in the background.
You are clearly a troll, so I'll just ignore you from now on.
AoC is not a bad game, but like it has been said too many times - they launched way too early. Plus it is not for everyone. To me, it is too hack'n'slash, same as WoW. However, what kept me playing WoW and not AoC were the social ties.
AoC's really problem is that lost customers early, it will be right down impossible to bounce back. What happened with AoC and WAR is a domino effect, once your friend(s) quit, you start pondering about that as well. The expansion might indeed bring some new customers and few resubs, but AoC will remain a game with relatively low subscription game. I very much doubt it will die, dunno why people even assume that, but it will remain a smaller game like Anarchy Online.

I play on EU servers and have tried 4 different ones, same story each time. It's a kiddie heaven. Maybe you are just lucky or maybe players on US servers are more mature in general
I've played on two, and I found the chat channels very friendly and enjoyable in general, a bit juvenile from time to time but not so much that it gets annoying. Could be a matter of perspective, a matter of opinion, or a matter of what conversations one choose to participate in or just naturally attracts. ;-)

I would rather drink swamp water than a mixture of arsenic and gasoline too, but I would pass on both for a tall glass of ice tea
I miss DAoC
