Right now both of those classes do good in PvE and PvP. They will probably be nerfed over the coming patches though (They are a bit overpowered in PvP. I believe the nerfs are going to apply to PvP only and not PvE from what i've heard). The Priest of Mitra and Tempest of Set are fun ranged classes that heal and do DPS. They are wanted for all groups, they do great in PvE, and they are competent in PvP. Ranger is always fun too.
I don't prefer Demo or Necro that much because so many people made them as flavor of the month type things. Tempest of Set is kind of like AoE and heals which you might enjoy. I really enjoy playing on my 50 Ranger and hunting people that I don't like. Stalking them and making them rage haha.
Casters are good choice, especially necro. Class balance is really bad at the moment and casters own all other classes. Faced with an experienced caster, a melee character has almost zero chance of survival. Also casters are much easier to play. If you want a challenge, roll a melee character, but prepare to die in pvp a lot. Good luck.
I'm a HoX and I take out casters left and right. It isn't as bad as people make it out to be, but melee definitely have a disadvantage due to combos needing to land.
Balance constantly shifts in MMO's though. This type of thing won't last long.

I don't know what you consider "long", but AoC has been called "Age of Casters" for many months now. If you get jumped by a caster, you are doomed.
We are not talking about regular MMO balance shift. Melee characters are in HUGE disadvantage and everyone who has played one knows it.
im a demo, melee classes can be pretty easy, however hoxes and other spike damage classes tear me up faster than i can get a decent damge skill off. im sorry demos are great in a group, but in 1vs1 they die too fast. call it lack of skill if you want but its not uncommon to go down in 1-3 hits from any spike damage class. if im stunned or knocked down i rarely survive. At least we can do the most overall damage, if we can live long enough, nots not over powerd its how a caster should play.
demos do have an advantage in ganking, with all their cc's and damage buffs, especially with their range for havoc demos, however the good skills have a long enough cooldown to mean you cant spam them.

i play both melee and caster chars, i find it faster to level up a caster, but i like melee better because of combos, dual w, and fatalities...
Dark Templars are quite both so you may wanna try that, i also heard they become quite interesting after 1.05
