The reason that MOST people went jedi in SWG was because SOE made the stupid decision to make jedi so powerful. What chance did the other professions in PVP have when jedi started traveling in packs overt? If they had given attention to other professions and given them a path of some kind, the numbers would have been a lot lower. And of coarse the PVE crowd didn't like the fact that if they went jedi they would be forced into PVP. So it was just an all around bad implementation of a class that had no business being in that game in the first place.

As long as Bioware pays proper attention to the other classes there will be a nice mix. If done right the ratio should be 60-70 percent jedi/sith and 30 percent the other classes. Jedi/Sith are a fun and iconic part of Star Wars so we shouldn't expect them to have low numbers.

Jedis will be the cookie cutter class, the main army and the choice of most including me. That is not bad considering the era the game is supposed to be in. The other classes will work as support and i beileve they will be sought after. I am sure it will balance out eventually with many people rerolling (maybe including me?) to other classes.

despite having watched all the films numerous times, i still find sthe backround so much jedi/sith-centralised that it will be difficult for everyone to come up with a good reason to get involved with other professions or classes.

the main reason is not about jedis/sith beeing overpowered, it's about how (even roleplay related) interesting is it to play something else?

and here in my opinion is the bigger problem:

if you cannot show or produce enough "feeling" or "immersion" about other races or classes you will end up with a jedi/sith population about 99.9%, but thats not a game related issue it is much more related to story background or the lack of those regarding non jedi/sith lore and/or fiction.

Of course there are still going to be plenty of players rolling other classes at launch - actually, I'll be one of them. Also, this being a reroll-friendly game (from what the devs keep saying), I expect many to see that there are indeed a bit too many force-users and find themselves preferring to play their non-force-user alts more and more.

Well, I'm personally going Sith or Jedi from the start.

It's a bit ridiculous that in this game Han Solo is as powerful as Darth Vader but what are you going to do? Choke and Force Throw III are just more interesting than pootling around with blasters.

As for this game being 'reroll friendly', that is pure speculation on your part. From the evidence on hand, I'd say it was going to be precisely the opposite but we won't know until further information is released regarding account slots and/or profession changing.

I wouldn't worry. People always play ALTs.

Not for the first couple of years in SWG, they didn't., not unless they were paying for more than one account. True, this isn't SWG but it is LA and we don't know yet whether LA is going to allow us to have more than one character per account, per server or what.

*Clears throat* the PvP was removed at the time everyone went Jedi (at the JedI carebear expansion party NGE aka no good excuse). Actually after the NGE, Jedi were not worth hunting having been so nurfed. Your post makes sense it does not.

Of course there were a lot of players that didn’t like being hunted at the time (pre-NGE), having so much power and the actual potential to there being a downside to the class. Oh my, we wronged them so, pooooor pooooor Jedi! Gee and go figure, at a time in the SW universe story arch when JedI were hunted… go figure hehehe pooor pooor Jedi. But Uncle Lucas was there to hold their hand. He set all the wrongs right and all the bad men went away.

Please no, not another Jedi Online game. I mean I really like SW, but I've been watching the universe revolve around a single class since 77 and it's annoying, really. People actually do like Troopers, BH's, smugglers and general vagabonds... I almost fear this game will be just Jedi and buff dancers again haha.

No, not at all speculation on my part. As I mentioned, the developers themselves keep saying this (Actually, I sorta wish they stop doing that). You can read it in several reviews.

No, most people(at least on my server) were going jedi way before the NGE once the path became known(it was available on the internet) You could find them grinding at their favorite exploit spot on Kashyyk. Once the path became known there were quite a few PVP's complaining about jedi. Even if you were using one of the temporary FOTM templates, it was only good in one on one encounters.Jedi usually travelled in packs so that was of no help.

Of course there were a lot of players that didn’t like being hunted at the time (pre-NGE), having so much power and the actual potential to there being a downside to the class. If the original restrictions(perma-death) had been left in place the jedi system MIGHT have worked. But yeah, the carebears whined and SOE caved in like they did every time. Every patch usually meant a new FOTM template because SOE would nerf any skill that had any advantage over jedi.

The games that don't have jedi in them tend to not do well. There have been games centered on Bounty Hunter, Fighters and Republic Commandos. They weren't very successful. The only one I can think of that did well was Battlegrounds.I hope that Bioware doesn't repeat SOE's mistake and cater to just the jedi class.

From most of the forums and comments about this game that I have read (yes they might not be many, but..) seems like A LOT of people are looking forward to the Bounty Hunters and Smugglers!

So it seems like many people are looking forward to the other classes more than Jedi or Sith. Don't get me wrong though, yes I agree that there might be a lot of Jedi and Sith running around, but aren't these the icons of Star Wars? so for sure many would like to try them out sooner or later.

i'd rather play a vampire... seriously.. i could suck up the midichlorians ... instant undead jedi powers.

Although hopefully i don't become a bounty hunter and accidently kill a jedi and get some of their blood all over me.... wouldn't wanna catch midichlorians

If you're a Star Wars fan, at least give the Light Saber the respect it deserves as an icon representing a forty-year-old, story-telling tradition.  Calling it a glow-bat is degenerative, and insulting to other long-time Star Wars fans, and shows your ignorance and prejudice as a person.

Id probally end up going trooper.  I can play a jedi in a bunch of games.  I would probally have a jedi alt at some point just to try it out, but being the heavily armored guy with guns, thats more my style.  Plus it reminds me of one of my favorite star wars games, republic commando.

Sith Empire Trooper ( hopefully ) for me, if not, I'll just have to make do with the Republic version.

I wouldn't say it's just non-Jedi games that fail, SW just seems to have a higher percentage of games that are sub-par, like there is some SW game curse. Lego was a really good and well rounded game however.

Sure there were some that unlocked Jedi in SWG, but populations were still considerably low which was good for the canon of the era. And at least in that time, it made more content for BH's. Of course it was handled wrongly imo, the PvP maybe should not have been allowable until they were in the higher levels/boxes just like BH's. But anyway, I doubt Bioware will touch any of that with a 10ft pole. Of course Jedi should have considerable populations in this game, but just hopefully not the bulk of the content. I like playing hunters, engineers and pilots myself, so we’ll see what they come up with.

I'm with him. If some retard thinks he's funny calling a Lightsaber a glow-bat he's probably part of the wrong fandom.

this was my first tought after the anoucemend for the new star wars online game. i think it will be end as a boring jedi online.. oh yeah of course: and a boring sith online too! i think the sith will be heavy overplayed and kiddy-friendly overpowerd.

my second thought was: why do i want play a mmorpg with the focus on single player?

    futher thoughts:

do i really need all this ugly pastel-colors? do i want look like a clown from a average US-american movie?

do i really want play a theme park mmorpg? do i want grind? do i want rush from map to map and see sometimes a AFK-player in a social hub?

    well....

DO i want pay a monthly fee for something like this..?

To be honest if they agreed to  let Jedi be a starter professions they should have made all the Proffessions Jedi. Just make them diffrent kinds, 6 classes of Jedi would have been the best way to go. Jedi should kick every other class ase if you stick to the lore. They are the super elit, so if you decide to include them you have to make every class a Jedi one.....just let them play diffrently.

Im really not sure Bioware knows what they are doing, we will just have to wait and see but im not getting my hopes up on this one....

Maybe it's just me, but I think taking a comment like that personal is just a bit odd. It's a fictitous weapon for a fictitous franchise so who cares what it's called? I like Star Wars, but  it's not real life and should never be confused as such.

if they do make a starting jedi class then obviously it will be the most popular one.

    its obvious and inevitable.
