Vampires - what do you think?

This may have been discussed already, I am new here, but I was wondering: what does everyone think about the current popularity of vampire related things? I love Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and I like that series True Blood, but I never really read Twilight or saw the movies, it seemed too "romancy" for me, and I think it's a little ridiculous that the vampires sparkle. But if I like Buffy and True Blood, do you think it is worth checking Twilight out? Also, anyone know any good vampire anime?

Have you met a vampire? I know some people are into it so much they try and get their teeth altered to look like vampires...

Probably because I'm a grumpy old man but I prefered vampires when they were the spooky monsters in movies.  Now days they are all just poor misunderstood folks who didn't ask for their curse, oh, and they're all kung fu masters.  God I'm getting so sick of all that wire fighting / ballet crap that has spread like a cancer through movies and television these days.  Geez, old corny westerns from the 1940's had more realistic fighting than the movies today.

On the other hand I'll admit I did like Buffy but not so much for the fight scenes or the vampires but mostly because it had a quirky sense of humor to it.  And I hated Angel, fugging whiney arse poor little Angel moping around, argh.

I haven't seen Twilight but as I understand it it is very much the chick flick targeted at teenage girls.

I read the twilight series, the books were okay-ish and kept my interest through the entire series

but the twilight movie was definently uncool, if your a male anyways.

I'm hoping the New Moon movie will be much better. out of all the books i'd have to say I enjoyed new moon the most.

    I think they suck.

No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-

Eh watch Twilight, won't hurt anything if your into Vampires.  I happen to like them myself.

Wish they would portray movie Vampires in more different ways, there are more then just blood suckers.

Good vampire animes that I know and have seen are Trinity blood, Blood the last vampire and you may want to check also Hellsing although I preferred the manga version of it.

Manga was tons better actually making the anime seem lesser. I was a fan of Father Anderson and i was very disappointed in how they showed him in the anime and his relationship with Alucard.

Plus the manga had a much much cooler ending:D

Vampires have been popular for a long time. They have been one of my favorite monsters in books and movies. Steven King's "Salams Lot" .....Brian Lumley's "Necroscope" series. (definatly not the romance type vampires)

    Movies

Frightnight, The Lost Boys, 30 days of Night, Vampires,  Innocent Blood..all good.

i got pissed off about the romatisization of vampires around the time of the the Anne Rice "Vampire Lestat" i mean how much worse can it get when a vampire is so cool he becomes a goddamn rock star. (1985)

Vampires are monsters, supernatural creatures of darkness and are damned by god. All that is good (the sun) and holy (crosses and holy water) destroy them. They can mind control you obliterating your will and self determination.

They have all the sex appeal of being eaten by a shark or being raped after being given rohypnol in your drink.

(OK, maybe this vampire is just a bit sexy)

There is a lot of bad vampire movies and stories out there.

I  hate making vampires magical, turning into a bat, flying, crosses and holy water crap, kinda lame.  The wooden stake to the heart and garlic is also just cheesey.

I think vampires should be more modern, vampirism is a disease, severe allergies to silver and sunlight, really fast regeneration rate so they are hard but not impossible to kill and essentially immortal, they are also faster and stronger than average, but not too much.  But also sexy kinky and brutal, They should have bondage clubs where they use humans as cattle, none of that they are highshcool students that sparkle stuff.

But Twilight has really influenced me, I feel the need now to make a proper vampire movie to rectify the dross that Stephenie Meyer released on to the world.

Don't you worry little buddy. You're dealing with a man of honor. However, honor requires a higher percentage of profit

Vampires, like zombies, are made to be killed.  ^_^

I can't stand it. I do think True Blood is an ok show/book. But Twilight is just flat out retarded. Sparkling Vampires? "Vegetarian" vampires? And this scene in Twilight pisses me off...The vampires have to wait for a thunderstorm to play baseball. When it storms they have to drive 5 billion miles out into the middle of nowhere so nobody can hear them hit the ball. Yet they played with wooden bats? If they are hitting the ball that damn hard they'd break the damn bat! And it also bugs me the amount of grown women that get all giggly over kids books.

I'd take Noferatu, Bram Stoker or Christopher Lee Dracula over any of the gay teenage, emo vampires any day of the week. Even Anne Rice wasn't as disgusting as any of the crap they make now. At least she sticks to the lore somewhat.

Wow, cool, thanks for all the recommendations! I have wanted to see the movie "The Lost Boys" for a long time, and I think I might start reading Hellsing, I really enjoy reading manga. I am still undecided on Twilight, haha, I will probably see it since it's such a big cultural phenomenon, but I agree with you guys, the sparkling thing is a little stupid, vampires should be scary and tough! Man, I want to watch some more Buffy too, never got all the way through the series but loved what I saw.

When I hear vampire I think "blood-sucking creature of the night", not "mysterious and dangerous handsome man".

I don't understand the current hype with vampires. It seems have come from prepubescent teen's overwhelming fascination with Twilight, which ended up pouring into mainstream society.

Because as we all know, things that teens find cool, everyone will also eventually find cool. Now everyone wants to cash in on the vampire hype.

I was reading a news article on "Why women find vampires attractive" and, being a woman, I couldn't understand any of it. The article mentioned that there was a sense of danger and unpredictability that came with being around a vampire, but I can think of many things that are also dangerous and unpredictable...and real.

    Like lions.

But women aren't readily jumping into lion cages with fresh meat straped to their behinds. If we wanted dangerous and unpredictable we could get it from the real world easily enough.

If I was to chose my date I would choose something that it living, breathing, warm, sane, and isn't going to suck my blood.

This is apparently (and suddenly) erotic to a large part of the female population. Although I can't quite understand the fascination with having your blood drained from you...into someone elses mouth. Let alone the mouth of something undead, dangerous, and unpredictable.

I think the whole vampire hype thing is crazy.

As for an interesting anime about a vampire: Master of Mosquiton '99. It's pretty comical.

Around the same time as male teens started styling their hair Dragonball Z style and going all metrosexual with Saggy pants etc. Which is what keeps my 16year old head worried about the upcoming generation im in. Help.

Seriously..Robert Pattinson's hair is ridiculous...apparently he is going to play Salvador Dali in an upcoming movie? That should be interesting :/

LOVE VAMPIRES... ever since I read Interview with a vampire when I was... err; I don't know anymore, probably around 13 or so, I was absolutely hooked. Read the whole series, yada, yada.

And I'm right there with you with True Blood; I'm so happy to see a Vampire show not be made out of 100% fail.

On to Twilight... I think whether you like it or not really depends on easily your intelligence gets insulted. It's not a GREAT story as in it's very predictable and if you read the book the writing can be, even for who is a horrible writer, downright aweful. THAT BEING SAID; if you want a shameful enjoyment kind of thing then Twilight can so be it.

The characters a very cute, and the ideas are very pre-18 pie in the sky type of dreamy girl stuff but if you don't mind that; it's a fun read. The movie is well... lame but again, same idea as the books; if you don't mind a little lame it's actually a little cute.
