FFXIV VS AION

Shoko_LiedShoko_Lied Member UncommonPosts: 2,193

Thought this was going to be some bash, flame, or rant huh? It's not

I was just thinking about how when FFXIV was first announced, immediatly there was a thread denoting "FF changed my plans".

Everyone in there who was going to try out Aion basically said screw it, FF all the way, "Including myself". The more I got to thinking about this, I am still looking forward to FF but there are a couple core elements that Aion and FF that is contrasted like Day and Night.:

FF: God like PVE. - Little to no PVP

Aion: Decent PVE: - Amazing PVP

Going by this, I can safely tell myself that I can play one, and when I get the urge for the other, I can switch over and be just as happy while fuffilling a different MMO purpose. "That is supposing the new FF stays true to the love for all that is a pure PVE experience"

Anyways I just wanted to note that while I said I would be dropping aion, I have kinda had second thoughts because on the PVP scene aion looks really promising so I will probably play both. All im saying is while square enix in smexy badass company. Give aion a little benefit of the doubt that it can deliver a solid PVP experience.

I guess this is what they meant when they said "Having the best of both worlds"

"This thread is mainly to all the former aion fans that jumped ship in the extreme excitement when the FF news first hit"

One is coming out in a month or so. The other in a year/ unknown. Not much in terms of versus, since there is amble time for people to play and get bored with Aion until Final Fantasy is out.

  • I love PvP as much as the next person, but I haven't really been all that impressed with Aion.  The graphics look amazing, but I just don't see anything special about the PvP.  Most of the videos I've seen are people soloing in the abyss.  To me, that style of PvP is better suited for FPS games.  MMORPG's should just be more epic than that.  DAoC/Warhammer RvR, Lineage 2 castle assaults, WoW battlegrounds (pre-TBC), Planetside, etc.  Those are examples of how I see MMORPG PvP and I just don't get that impression when looking at Aion.

I have preordered Aion, but I am very much excited about Final Fantasy.  Just as Xasapis says Final Fantasy wont be out for a while, and I need my mmo fix :D

But I do know that if they were both coming out at the same time, it would be Final Fantasy for me, if its as group and pve focused as the previous.  When it comes down to it I would choose great grouping and pve over all :)  But I know many would go the opposite way.

The difference in release times, just gives us all a chance to play two hopefully great games :)

Well I guess I'm just odd because I'm not one bit interested in FFIV.  I'm already angry enough at Square-enix for 11 and 12.  first they made it an MMO, then they made my single player version into a single player MMO.  I loved the series for their story based single player RPGs, and I wish they would stick with it, and simply make a new franchise for their MMOs.

screw you FFIV! gimme back my single player game!

Everything creates huge amounts of negativity on the internet, that's what the internet is for: Negativity, porn and lolcats.

Do you miss the turnbased combat in the old FF rpg's?  I know I do /cry

I 'm already commited to Aion. But the announcement of FFXIV is the one that has me really excited. I was about a week from buying a new PC, but with news of FFXIV I decided I can probably put it off until next year so I have the best system I can afford when FFXIV comes out.

I just hope my expectations with regards to FFXIV are not unreasonable. I'm already expecting perfection, which is probably not wise.

I'm hoping Aion will keep me interested in the meantime, I've had too many 1 month games just recently.

You are only seeing 1 aspect of it on a EPIC level. Do you honestly think someone like me who has been looking for his virtual home since 2005 would waste my time on a game that only has small scale PK?? Don't kid me. I have VERY high requirements myself, and tbh planetside is my favorite mmo ever.

I still play FFXI a ton, and I know alot of others who do to. MMORPG's aren't just short term stints.

If they hit aion properly and also add the player housing they are talking about. Who knows, more than 2 years might be easily possible

I love how people are all over Aion like when people were all over Warhammer and AoC. It's all the same, people are gonna play it for a few month's and think its the next big thing and then whats gonna happen, there gonna get bored and go back to you know what. It's the Flavor of the month baby :)

Aion is a holdover until XIV makes its debut. It's a very beautiful and flashy concept that obviously focuses more on the PVP aspect of gameplay.

I will say this - you can fucking FLY.

Other than aerial combat, unless you're a graphics whore or a PVP junkie, at this point I don't think this Aion will make much more of a splash than Guild Wars.

Hopefully it'll be incredibly challenging to advance in level.

Hopefully the information on it now is just a limited prelude.

Hopefully they add more customization options; races & epic / hero classes.

Hopefully they will get the flight & aerial combat mechanics right; winged flight does not mean flappy feathers and hovering, and aerial combat does not mean ground-level commands and identical animations in mid-air.

Just the name "Aion" makes me think of Final Fantasy's Aeons (which makes me somewhat prejudice). But I'll try it out. The free trial, I mean. But if this turns out to be a flop I'm going back to DDO. Less flair, more substance.

The difference from the past is that people are already burned and bitter. They no longer look for "innovation" or "next generation". The expectations have moved from that to "stable" and "polished". In my opinion that's a good thing. When you have a stable and quality product, you can build upon it. When it's not, no matter how innovative or next generation it is, you end up squashing bugs for a considerable amount of the life of the product.

Well, not exactly.  I know you are not bashing the game, and most FFXI players are mature enough to remain objective.

However, I am not sure comparing WAR and AoC's hype marketing is actually correct.  Aion actually suffered from less hype since what are promised are actually delivered.  I have seen very little hype or untrue statements about Aion, but of course there are always people that will expect too much from it.

"Aion might not be revolutionary, but it is a solid PvP centric game that are well polished and presented".

The above is the general concensus I seen from many different forums about Aion, everyone knows not to expect too much from it, and those that just want something new will not play it at all to start with.  Maybe the games that are released in the past 2 years have taught enough players to not buy into the hype and see for themselves what a game has to offer.  This is actually a good direction for MMORPG players.

Aion will fill my gaming time until FFXIV release. But as op implied, these games have different aims - one is more PVP, while Final Fantasy will focus on PvE more IMO (like FFXi did). So I may eventualy play both. We shall see.

While the part in that writeup about the PvP dungeon peaked my interest (and brought back fond memories of Darkness Falls in DAoC), I'm still not getting the grand-scale, epic PvP impression.  He wasn't even sure if that dungeon would facilitate that, he just speculated.  I'll keep my eye on Aion, but right now the only impressive thing I see is its graphics/animations.

I preordered Aion just to try out the beta, after that and realising it will be forced PvP pretty much the whole game past level 25 I have decided not to play it when it is out, the forced PvP is what changed my mind along with FFXIV planned to release in 2010, so I told myself 'why commit to something now?' and no, one year is not enough time, if I am going to pick up a new MMO now it will need to last me several years.

That being said, Aion looks great but it has already been out for a bit overseas, I think Aion's graphics and gameplay will look dated compared to FFXIVs... it is being developed on the white engine which is what FFXIII was made with, and the footage of the mithra casting a barrier is suppose to be in-game according to the E3 interview with the Devs(can find the interview on youtube).

But yeah FFXIV will have pretty much everything I like in it.

Virtually zero PvP so the community will be lacking the first person shooter/ganker jackasses which you find in the rotten community of WoW

A great community... FFXI also had a great community

Soloing capabilites while I wait for a group!! YAY thank you SquareEnix ^^;!

And the numerous amounts of character roles you can play (I loved how many classes were in FFXI)

  • popinjaypopinjay Member Posts: 6,539

I'm waiting more for FFXIV than AION simply because I know how good a game FFXI was.

AION is going to be more PvP orientated endgame while I believe FFXIV will be more PvE endgame orientated. After playing so many bad PvP games lately, I'm just kind of tired of the genre.

I think I'm going back to seeking MMOs for that immersive world/story feel that FFXIV will more than likely provide more than just the typical blood, boobs, and forum gangster taunts.

Well your just making assumptions that FFXIV will have "Virtually zero PVP" becuase your thinking of how FFXI is. When it's already been stated that FFXIV is gonna be a whole new game aside from the races to give you a good transition from FFXI to FFXIV.

I wrote that in my OP, funny how if you hadn't failed to notice it or you woulnd't look like such an idiot right now...

Besides, ANYONE who knows anything at all about SE can guarentee you that if there is PVP in this game, it will not be a large aspect. If it is, that runs the risk of ruining the PVE for alot of people. Which so far, is 110% what SE has tried to cater to, and basically the FF fanbase are 99% hardcore PVE lovers.

i never got into ff11 only cause it just wasnt very pc friendly for me.

Aion is a korean mmo, its low budget despite what you believe it is just hyped. Aion prolly has 1/10 of the development ff14 will have.

aion doesnt bring anything new to the table i don't understand the hype im a level 25 sorc in the beta and its okay but mmo's are just mirror images of each other now.

diablo 3 is one game im looking for can't wait for that.

Star wars is going to be an epic mmo. Biowar releases some of the best story driven mmo's im dreading star wars and ff14 coming out around teh same time. I wont know which to choose.

FF14. When i saw the announcement and heard the way they were planning to launch and the platform development i got all gitty inside. Final fantasy is going to develop a new style of mmo, mark my words they're gonna trash this current model of level , get skills, kill x come back, press buttons. FF will probably be very story driven with alot of innovation. Im more looking forward to that than another grinder. I am so burnt out on mmo's they're all the same. Eve is the only one different and even that is just a huge skill grind sometimes.

It's hard to compare aion to ff because there is no gameplay of ff released no real storyline no anything just a video of mostly cinematics.

Aion will be another lineage 2 its an okay game taht will draw a medium fanbase. I just wish these games would quit re-designing wow and try for something new. Only games i play are atlantica occasionally i love turn based combat and eve, sometimes guild wars cause its what mmo pvp should be like.

FF14 is gonna probably make or break continuing mmo's for me that and star wars.

funny thing is I made a similar post to this one in the Aion forum.

It was dismissed pretty quickly. lol

    bias much?

if the pvp aspect of Aion is nice, I may end up playing it as my main. =P

For me FFXIV will rock my socks and blow Aion out of the water. But I'll probably play Aion untill FFXIVs release... I'm excited for both but I have a feeling nothing will compare (in my opinion) to FFXIV

Heheh.. I think a lot of people fall into that category - anticipating XIV because of how much they enjoyed XI. I know I'm in that category. I have my hopes... I will say that SE is one of the few companies I can feel confident is going to really try bringing something unique to the genre and make it work.. not just as a gimmick to say "look, our game is different, so you should check it out".

How will it work out? Well that remains to be seen, which is why I maintain cautious optimism. They are definitely in the short list of companies I believe *can* pull it off, though.

AION is going to be more PvP orientated endgame while I believe FFXIV will be more PvE endgame orientated. After playing so many bad PvP games lately, I'm just kind of tired of the genre.

I'm in the pre-order beta crowd for Aion and... having played it through two beta weekends now... I'm feeling pretty ambivalent about it. It looks great, plays great and performs great... but it feels too "familiar"; too much like several other MMOs I've played over the past several years. Even the flying aspect doesn't really bring that much more to it, for me.

Aion was near the top of my list, until the announcement of "The Secret World" which seems different and intriguing enough to get me interested... Then along comes the announcement of FFXIV which has pretty much pushed past everything else to the top of my "waiting for" list.

I think I'm going back to seeking MMOs for that immersive world/story feel that FFXIV will more than likely provide more than just the typical blood, boobs, and forum gangster taunts.

Bingo. This is an area I believe FFXI is lightyears ahead of other games in - depth of the world, storylines and characters. In no other MMO I have ever played could I tell you about a NPC in the game beyond their name, where they were and what tasks they give you. I couldn't tell you anything about their personality, their role in the storyline, etc. etc.

On the other hand, being a proud, tree-hugging Windurstian in FFXI, I can tell you all about Ajido-Marujido, Nana Mihgo, Shantotto, Star Sybil, Perih Vashai, etc... They aren't merely anonymous quest dispensers, they are very "real" and important characters in the world. They have histories that have shaped and made them who they are now (you get some great insight into this in the Wings of The Goddess Missions). They have their own personalities, manner of speaking, etc. I know San d'Oria and Bastok have their own equally-important cast of characters.

Even the areas in FFXI have a history to them. What you don't glean from the stone monuments in each area, you can perceive in the geography, the ruins scattered about, etc. Each nation's city has its own identity, etc.

In many ways, the world of FFXI has set my expectations of what a virtual online world (not merely an online game) should be. Vana'diel is most definitely a "world", and I admit that I judge all other MMOs by it.

In this regard, I fully expect SE to deliver the same level of detail and depth in XIV - it's what they do; and I can't wait to take my first steps into it.

I kinda envy people (in a good way) just starting out in FFXI... remembering back to what it was like for me as a brand-new player, knowing all that the new players have to look forward to; all the new experiences they'll have and the milestones they'll reach, and how "meaningful" it will be when they do. For example... who doesn't have a great story about their first trip, on foot, to Jeuno? Their first time getting Rank 5? Unlocking their first Advanced Job? Defeating Maat for the first time?

Though I can never go back and experience FFXI as a newbie again... I can at least look forward to doing it again with XIV.
