How did this happen? warcraft.moviechronicles.com/
EQ1 both revolutionized the genre and owned it for several years. Sony even has a film division.
So how come a movie was never made based on Everquest?
Comments
Because WoW is just cool like that.

Tamat : There have been rumors for years about a possible EverQuest movie. Is that ever going to be something that comes to light?
John : So the EverQuest movie, I can say that it’s being worked on. I can’t really announce anything specific yet, but it is in active discussion with Sony Pictures, and they’ve got some things going up there but we can’t really comment on it yet.

WoW has 11 million subscribers but EQ does not.
There was supposed to be an EQ movie a long time ago. I remember seeing some contest or something, about the winner being a part of the movie somehow.
It's like the Resident Evil movie(s). I remember getting Resident Evil: Director's Cut for PS1 and seeing a mail-in contest for the upcoming movie, where you could be an extra or something. Actually, it might have been Resident Evil 2.. but I can't quite remember.
RE1 was released in 1996, and RE2 was released in 1998. The first Resident Evil movie came out in 2002. That's quite a delay for the "upcoming movie" announcement..
See, back then.. during the RE1 days (even RE2), a movie sounded mint.. because the whole premise was solid. The games weren't as fantastical as their successors, the story was still somewhat believable. When RE3 came along, it started to get a little out there. When RE4 came out, the whole thing was just wiped away.
Edit: I say all that because like EverQuest, the Resident Evil movies were too late and they missed the mark for what Resident Evil was really all about. Still rather successful though....
?
World of Warcraft is the most Michael Bayish type MMO right now. It would be easier to make a movie for it than EQ.
Don't be terrorized! You're more likely to die of a car accident, drowning, fire, or murder! More people die every year from prescription drugs than terrorism LOL!
Wow, is everyone on here such a huge turnip like this guy?
"LOLZ MAN EVERQUEST/SWG/UO(pick one) WAS DA BEST MMORPG GAME EVER! FUCK WOW LOL!"No, they weren't. And no, I am not saying WoW is either.
Seriously, move on with your fucking life you freaking vegetable.
I'm just cool like that.
We can only hope it turns out as good as the Street Fighter movie. Hooray!!!
In America I have bad teeth. If I lived in England my teeth would be perfect.
I dunno I sorta liked the Resident Evil movies. The latest BTW is slated to be released in 2010.
So, like, hey dood, when are they gonna make a movie outta LOTRO?
As soon as they finish the one for SWG.
Hold on Snow Leopard, imma let you finish, but Windows had one of the best operating systems of all time.
If the Powerball lottery was like Lotro, nobody would win for 2 years, and then everyone in Nebraska would win on the same day.
And then Nebraska would get nerfed.-pinkwood lotro fourms

Wow, that was so unexpected and amazingly witty.
I'm just cool like that.
Don't worry I'm sure the incredible Uwe Boll will make a movie out of your beloved EQ.

Warcraft has an amazing storyline and lore. Everquest is one of the most boring generic fantasy worlds I've played and as an mmorpg it doesn't have a good story.
Go play Warcraft 3 and The Frozen Throne and other Blizzard games like diablo 2 and Starcraft. Blizzard are masters of creating cinematics and stories that immerse you. It's funny how everyone shits on Blizzard and saying they ripped off Warhammer or whatever but I'd rather Warcraft and starcraft over Warhammer any day.
i highly doubt they'll base a movie on World of Warcraft but just the Warcraft IP. The press probably just say based on World of Warcraft cause they're clueless and havn't heard of Warcraft 3 before.
Buzz , Buzz , Hype.
Crap now I'm part of the problem.
Makes sense 11 trillion people through-out the unknown universe subscribe to Wow, this means it will be the biggest movie since titanic.
Let us pray he does, WoW > EQ > . >
EQ was never popular enough for that. The most mainstream attention it got was when Curt Schilling talked about it in interviews and wore an Everquest hat in press conferences. Now he's making his own MMO which I'm actually looking forward to...
My youtube MMO gaming channel
Even Final Fantasy had a movie.
If your game makes enough money and you want to spend the dough, you can make a movie.
"TO MICHAEL!"
Gonna totally sound like a nerd here, but I'm going to say it anyways.
I agree with you on the EverQuest statement. I never dug the lore, or the IP, because quite frankly, IT IS extremely generic, and seemingly cut and pasted straight out of D&D. It's just not very inspired, and too convoluted to really give a damn.
Warhammer (and Warhammer 40K), on the other hand, is one of the most rich and inspired IPs in all of sci-fi/fantasy. It has a lot of roots in mythology, literature, and gaming that is very well cited and apparent, but with creative new taste (Lovecraft, Tolkien, D&D, Nordic paganism, etc). And best of all, it's a persistent conflict, with a lot of meat, and renewable heroes and figures. Just reading about the Empire vs. Chaos conflict alone should be enough to fuel anyone's love for that universe.
Warcraft, whilst I did greatly enjoy, has a lot of those elements missing. Warcraft borrowed liberally from Warhammer in its early days, but became its own beloved entity and setting by the on-set of WC3. It told a very heart-wrenching and compelling story involving a lot of compelling characters. It was indeed an epic story. But what Warcraft lacks, is universe. What is it like to be a member of the Alliance? Or your average dwarf in general? What are the political conflicts, and propaganda? How is the outlook on the world, as described by your faction? What do I believe in? Are there even gods to begin with?
It's just so damned... empty. And it doesn't explain these things. You got the general gist of the conflict because of the wars going on, and the major figures involved, but Warcraft lacks depth. And you can't say it doesn't, because it was a MAJOR problem in the MMORPG's early days. Suddenly, everyone forgot that they were at war, and killing giant fire elementals and black dragons which were virtually absent from the story before, suddenly took precedence. And now that they've gotten back on track, and started re-introducing players to the characters that they know and love from the setting... they're killing them off, without introducing new ones! Kael'thas is down, Illidan is down, Arthas is soon to go down, the remaining figures are respawning, dead-eye'd NPCs, and the pot from which memorable or really, quality characters, is drawing very thin.
The Warcraft universe as an IP, is dying a slow, and painful death, and nobody cares, because the loot tables keep refreshing. I don't see that happening to the Warhammer universe. Now, which one is better off, might I ask?

You can say that now my friend, but just wait till they release Warcraft 4, dying a slow, painful death my ass. WoW may have completely butchered the IP but come Warcraft 4 (which I have absolutely no doubt we will see one day) they are gonna continue the story right where they left off from the Frozen Throne.
I do agree with you however that Warcraft IP is incomparable to Warhammer Fantasy, off the bat I can't think of any Warhammer fantasy games that have done the IP any justice, whereas with 40K I believe Dawn of War did a great job (except perhaps DoW2 which I heard sucks balls).
One must remember that the Warcraft IP was MADE for games, it was made from 'scratch' and you could argue heavily lifted from Warhammer. Warhammer however existed long before mainstream videogaming, of course it's going to have a richer lore. Hmm... I think I've gone off the point now...

WoW has a story established by awesome single player games that give it more story depth than a "massively online errand runner" that is seen in just about every MMO(even WoW).
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
This is why EQ does not have a movie, does not have 12 million subscribers. The world was generic and shallow as all get-out. This is also why I have lost interest in WoW, and probably WC4 if they ever get to putting that out, they watered everything down story-wise to push out expansions and fill them with novelty bosses.
I suspect that the Warcraft movie will be abused for the same reason- to introduce more loot pinatas for WoW or WoW 2 expansions. I have a feeling its going to suck.
