This is a tie-in to a new Star Wars book that is due out this Halloweeen.

This is how Del Rey now describes Deathtroopers in their catalog:

From the first appearance of Darth Vader in the groundbreaking movie Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, Star Wars fans have known what terror feels like -- and they loved it. But never before has Star Wars publishing ventured into the unknown territory of true horror . . . until now.

When the Imperial prison barge Purge breaks down in a distant, uninhabited part of space, its only hope seems to lie with a Star Destroyer found drifting, derelict and seemingly abandoned. But when a boarding party is sent to scavenge for parts, only half of them come back -- bringing with them a horrific disease so lethal that within hours, nearly all aboard the Purge will die. And death is only the beginning.

For aboard the Star Destroyer, amid its vast creaking emptiness that isn't really empty at all. For the dead are rising, soulless, unstoppable, and unspeakably hungry.

Praise for Joe Schreiber's Chasing the Dead:

"Abandon hope, all readers who enter Schreiber's taut, scary debut: you're not going anywhere until you devour every one of its tension-filled pages." -- Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"Joe Schreiber's Chasing the Dead is like a tour of The Twilight Zone via Stephen King... a pulse-pounding excursion into nightmare and terror. Taut and razor sharp, it demands to be read with the lights on." -- James Rollins, bestselling author of The Last Oracle

Although I think that zombies as failed experiment can fit in any MMO, especially sci fi, I also think its a very cheesy subject. I might buy the Restuss shotgun for this.

Badger I can't believe you really support this.

This is not Star Wars, spin it how you want with a new book.

SWG has turned into a LA test bed.

I love Zombie stuff, I think the last five books I read were all Zombie related.

Autumn series, World War Z and some others... I'm looking forward to both the book and the SWG content.

Do you reckon they'll actually make new art for this or just stick some blood on the Stormtroopers and turn off their animations so they walk like South Park Characters?

  • GutboyGutboy Member Posts: 630

There is new art it's on the producers note from July 31st.

Hope they do new interior and building designs too instead of just reusing the same old crap we always see like the Legacy quests the same bunker design over and over again and then you get the Squill cave layout spammed.

Nothing really new, I read some SW comics with zombies in them a while back.    Its cheap to put in things like this now since they got tools to make instances.       I just wish they would redo the old caves scattered around and make them usefull again, anyone else miss looting the containers for AA's or CA's?

The devs already stated that they would be using a present NPC city or creating a new city for this, in stage one it would be an imperial controlled city and in the next publish it would turn into the zombie infested city.

The city will have ever increasing higher levels of zombies (to allow for solo play, this will not be an instance) and only in the last bunker in the city would a team be needed to defeat the boss mob/mobs.

The current plan is to have the first part out directly after the DE publish that is on TC now.

I for one, also thought this was a very sick joke.  I am more of a cannon Star Wars fan.  Even after I said this, I still play SWG.  But this addition to the SW Universe, and to the game is a JOKE!  Put down the drugs developers.  This confirms to me even more, that when TOR comes out, I will be gone forever.

You people piss and cry about everything.

Try reading up on what the book is about. It actually sounds like it's a good story. Let the content release before you whine.

I swear this generation is nothing but a bunch of spoiled crybabbies.

SWG although far from perfect is still the best sandbox mmo out. It is much improved from the initial pathetic release of NGE.

And to those that think TOR is some holy grail, WAKE UP, TOR has some of the developers MOST responsable for pushing NGE the way it was and some of the biggest liars about it.

TOR even uses the ever infamous "heroic" and "iconic" to explain it's New Gaming Experience. TOR will NOT be a sandbox, it will NOT have player housing/cities. It looks more and more like Star WoWs everytime I see it.

Although I agree with your sentiments regarding TOR, I can't agree that SWG is in any way "better". IMO, the game has sucked nuts ever since that fateful day that Tiggs left the company.

Saying it's better now than at the release of the NGE is like saying you prefer constipation to whistling the Hershey squirts.

There's only ONE hope for SWG, and we're not allowed to talk about that here.

You would screw up a wet dream.  I am old, I saw Star Wars when it first hit the drive in movie theater.  There were NO Zombies, and will NEVER be zombies in that universe.  No matter what crack pot writes a book.

Names of the developers responsible for the NGE that are now working on TOR please? As in evidence? The two most notable NGE contributors, well one is sadly no longer with us and the other is plying his trade with a small company on the other side of the world that no-one has heard of or cares about.

When Walton and Vogel went hand picking developers from SWG, do you really think they'd have picked the people at the forefront of the biggest fuck up of all time in MMO history?

As for TOR not being a sandbox, that's kind of irrelevent as we've known that almost since the announcement of the game which is what... 18 months ago? Hasn't dulled the hype at all apart from the lunatics that pray to the pre-cu gods before they climb under their ewok duvet every night  :P

Ultima Online is still a far bigger sandbox than SWG has been since the NGE.  Housing doesn't a sandbox make.  EVE Online is a far bigger sandbox experience than SWG is since the NGE, and EVE Online is basically MS Excel with some game elements added to it.

None of the TOR development leadership were in any way involved in the NGE.  Hell, Gordon Walton, one of the co-studio heads left SOE over the way the CURB, which was being developed with player input, was scrapped for the CU, which was implemented over the objections of the playerbase.

As for adding zombies to SWG, it is an asinine move.  It is fully based on the fact that the SOE producer who was just moved to a different project, is a major horror movie fan and decided they needed to do it after hearing about the book.  It wasn't based on the book being any good, which given the vast majority of Star Wars novels it will be as close to good as the Smed admitted SWG was close to fun, shortly after the NGE.  Zombies in SWG is fully the result of the SOE producer thinking 'I likes zombies' and nothing more.

The marketing for TOR using the terms "heroic" and "iconic" are little more than the marketing weasels at LEC being, like a great number of marketing weasels, complete morons.  "Iconic" is a negative term due to its connection with the, post decision to implement, NGE, and "heroic" has quickly become meaningless due to the decision to use it in every sentance describing the game when it was announced.  Neither of which will have any impact on the gameplay, which from what we have been shown, is much closer to traditional MMORPG combat than SWG's hoorid psuedo-FPS combat system, even with the equally horrid attempt to tack on an poorly implemented target lock system.

SWG is far from a sandbox experience.  A more apt description would be "litterbox", as there are things left over from the original sandbox game, but they are completely overwhelmed by the crap that was added with the NGE, and the crap that has been dumped in since.

Wow, hard to believe that book isn't a joke, given how George Lucas insists SW is designed for 12 year olds.  There truly is nothing his companies won't do for a buck I guess.

I have to agree zombies in SW is nuts but the wookiee and trooper look damn cool hehe

Lucas doesn't consider anything that isn't in the films to be canon, so he will let the novel writers do a great number of things that are asinine.  When he takes to an EU idea, he adds it to his films (Dash Rendar's ship was added to a scene in the special edition of the original film because Lucas liked the Shadows of the Empire book), and when he doesn't, he ignores it (pretty much everything written about Boba Fett prior to Attack of the Clones).

His ability to ignore what others do to his IP gives him the leeway, or rather his underlings at Lucas Licensing the leeway, to let any number of hack writers write books that can potentially increase his wealth.

They won't look anywhere near as good when implemented in the game.

A Star Wars book with Zombies in it is stupid. SOE deciding to put zombies in SWG because of that book is even dumber. Good to see the SOE lapdogs will still defend SOE and this pathetic excuse for a game not matter how ridiculously retarded it becomes.

Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
    Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
    Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
    Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.

No your wrong there, they will not admit that the NGE was a mistake and offer some classic pre-cu servers.
