Champions Online: Offers Lifetime Subscriptions, STO Beta

MikeBMikeB Community ManagerAdministrator RarePosts: 6,555

Cryptic Studios will be offering a six month and lifetime subscription for Champions Online. Users who pony up for a six month subscription in advance receive a 33% off discount vs. a monthly subscription, as well as an Art Deco costume set, and most notably, access to the Star Trek Online closed beta test which begins later this year.

The high rollers, on the other hand, who can really afford to take a leap-of-faith, can opt for a lifetime subscription, which will offer all the same goodies that the six month subscription nets you, and more:

Lifetime Subscriptions come with:

  • Access to the Star Trek Online Closed Beta, beginning later this year!
  • Exclusive Art Deco costume set
  • Exclusive Retro Future costume set, available only to lifetime subscribers
  • Unique Mirror Universe outfit for Star Trek Online, available at the game’s release
  • Exclusive in-game Foxbat action figure, available only to lifetime subscribers
  • Eight additional character slots!

As I don't have a pre-order key for Champions Online, I do not know the pricing for the lifetime subscription. If you've got the details, let us know in the comments below!

UPDATE: Lifetime subscriptions will run you $199. The exclusive specials website can be found here.

Got your pre-order key? Enter it at the Champions Online pre-order site!

My only problem with this offer is that it expires on August 31st, before the game is even shipped.

Um where does it say that maybe i'm jus tblind but the only date I see is "recieve items by September 1st".  I mean the Open beta Starts before then the people likely to want a life time sub are going to try it before they subscribe.

Personally 199 is just to much the game would have to be beyond bleeding awsome for me to want to spend that much even though the perks are pretty nice.

It offers more than the life time sub for DDO / Lotr did but ...eh...well..Only if the Beta blows my mind will i consider it and hopefully they'll offer it for a while.

Yay, let the costume sets galore begin.

That's a cool discount on the 6-month subscription though, now if it didn't have an item mall...

200 isnt that bad for lifetime considering that for 15 bucks a month for 12 months is 180 plus the 50 box fee = 230.

Most MMOs out right now can't hold a player over 6 months, so its not a good deal unless its a great game.

All I think I can say is I do not plan on buying the game.

interesting way to choose people to beta STO (sad, but interesting)

there is certainly great interest in STO and this way those that really, really want to get into the game as soon as possible can do so by paying their way into beta

well, STO anticipation just went down a notch for me

maybe it is just me but this whole thing seems to read that they really don't have a lot of faith in Champions Online

hopefully lifetime subscribers will also be getting a nice handful of "cash shop cash" to make up for the fact that this game will be going totally ftp within a year

i pre-ordered this game already for 57 bucks. cant say that theres any chance in hell im going to pay for a life-time subscription right off the bat without having played it. now these new deals to me sound like greed vs the item mall. this game has to come out the gate screaming in order for me to pay for a lifetime membership. with the track record of the past mmos ive played at release, this option gets filed in the "no chance in hell" pile.

Hahahaha...I could smell this coming on the wind!

How many months did those Hellgate Founders get to play for their 150 smackers before Roper turned out lights and skipped down the road? Now it's a sure thing where the Item Shop idea came from.

    Nice try, Bill.

Dang those are still good offers.

i am running a dcuo fansite and i wanted to try champions-online since i want to check out the competiton.  i know what cryptic can do, so that $199 offer i would so be over that.  heck i spend like $180 a year on ffxi so 199 for a lifetime, is like winning a lotto to me.

This is a great time for MMO fans, no doubt!

Whatever - I loved CoX for 5 years and most people here think it's crap.  So I'm not going to listen to anyones opinion on this game.

I'm gong to do what I did with CoX, listen to my own opinion only and not go with the crowd.

I also thought WAR was a great game, so people opinions on MMOs mean crap to me.

Most MMO's do NOT offer lifetime subscriptions. You know what the benefit of a lifetime account it? Quite simply if you ever get bored you can just stop playing and do other things. When you feel like playing again you just login. I have a lifetime founders account with Lord of the Rings online and I play a month here.. take a month off and then I play another month of so. With the other MMO's you have to resubscribe and pay again. I paid a one time fee of 199.00 for LotR:O and I have been with the game since it came out. Lifetime subscription plans are a heck of a deal.

I agree. People get tired of MMOs so quickly because, more often than not, they burn themselves out. Yes, the feeling of playing a new game that you enjoy is great, but they blaze through the content so quickly that they have time to easily become bored.

Going at your own pace with a lifetime sub, having chances to take months off and play a couple of months if you feel like it, is a great advantage. You can pony up $200 for a new piece of hardware. At least the lifetime sub won't have to be replaced, unlike that hardware.

Still, I think the labeling just scares people away. "Well, I don't think I'll like this game very much... or, I don't know if I'll like it, do I really want to pay a lifetime sub for it? A lifetime is a long time..."

Haha so true.  I got so lucky with hellgate paying the 10 bucks for the sub right before they closed anymore subs so I got to play sub content until it closed 3 months later.  I have to say that they are offering quite a bit in this deal but theres no way I would take it after failship.  Just think of all the money they are going to make with preorders and 6 month subs before the game even releases, plus giving out beta keys to another one of their games...it's almost as if they have no further plans for the game.

I'm sure they will make good money off of the micro payments and this crazy offer but between Roper having a role in this games development and the hellgate situation...No deal!

True. I've wanted to EQ2 again for a long while now. I read about the updates regularly, and I know that a lot of interesting changes have been made, but I can't bring myself to pay again just to check them out, knowing that I don't have much time to play. I didn't even play a year of EQ2, so a lifetime sub would have cost me more, but if I had one, I'd have played more.

Same with City of Heroes (where I did play for over 4 years). I dropped my sub because I didn't feel like paying $15 for an hour of play a week or so. A lifetime sub would let me get in when I want.

That said, I'm not going to pay $200 for a game I haven't tried.

That's just ridiculous. How on earth can they expect people to pay that much for a game before it's even released. Make the deadline a month or two after release at least so people get a chance to try it out. This looks like a 'gift' to beta testers, nothing more. Mind you, with 8 additional character slots...

IF you like the game so much that you keep going back to it. For example, the last two MMORPGs I played (beside the current one, Beyond Protocol, I am playing) were AoC and WAR. I got bored of AoC after 1 month and would never go back and WAR I played for about 6 months and again would never go back.

Seeing as most MMORPGs are themeparks these days they have quite low replay value, once you have done all the interesting events and that usually takes about 5-6 months for a good themepark but much less if the game is not good.

Personally, this limited time offer on the lifetime subscription reeks of a total scam, and that's not even getting into whether or not the game is actually any good. What they're doing is trying to sucker those people who are really excited for the game. Try and get them to throw down $200 to get a few extra things without even being able to try the game out yet. It's just a really, really low thing to do. My faith in the game is plummeting quickly, so I doubt I'll be picking it up on launch, if I even do at all. And this is coming from a big CoH fan who has been playing CoH since launch.

  • ErolisErolis Member Posts: 54

The only game I would even, even consider doing a lifetime subscription right now is SW:TOR. And that's only after I can play it a head of time. Criptic with it's micro-transaction based game is not going to sucker me into a lifetime, especially when lifetime only covers the non-microtransaction based content/items. CO and STO should be FREE TO PLAY. Having to pay for the privilege and a cash shop is adding insult to injury. If bioware does do micro transactions I will not touch it. I know I would be tempted to buy stuff. You either do free to play or subscription. Not both.

    Ah were to begin :)

Not only is this outrages, paying a life time sub for a game that isnt even out yet :p

+ there is a item mall.

I played the CB for 15 min... not only was it boring but you need a very heavy pc to run it .... ( got a gamer pc of 1.5 years old and it had a lot  of trouble running it )
