I log into MMORPG.com every day, and for the past week I've seen a brand new post on Micro-Transactions.  No, this isn't another debate topic, this is my recommendation to you guys because I'm probably not the only person thinking this way.

Just take a step away from the computer, breath in and breath out then say to yourself "It's just a game."

The problem is no longer that there is going to be microtransactions, its the stigma that YOU the future players are attaching to this game.  Because there is almost always a post on the front page of MMORPG debating the topic, a certain stigma has been attached to Champions that it's going to be a bad game just because of the micro-transactions, which is probably going to drive away players in the long run.

I know, because I've read through all 34 pages of the primary post in question and I hate the game just from reading that.  I never thought I could be so passionate against a game, despite it looking really cool with some interesting features - especially since I liked CoX.  I personally don't hate the implementation of MTs, I don't enjoy them either, but I can live with with MTs.  What I hate is what the community has turned into.

I feel like the community has devolved into some sort of an anarchist colony where there is a riot going on 24/7.  That is not the kind of atmosphere that I want to play in, and I don't think anyone else wants that either - unless you're playing Face of Mankind, in which case riot away.

Regardless... for the sake of those of us who still have an inkling in playing, just let the topic rest for a while so that things can get back onto a normal pace around here and after the game is released... THEN pass judgment,  not before.

Let it be known that I hate WoW with a passion and will defend almost any MMORPG against it.

The mmorpg.com community is not the Champions Online community. And frankly, taking anything seriously from this site is.....well......wrong :).

I can understand your frustration, but this isn't the Champions Online community - this is the mmorpg.com community.

Many players who were otherwise looking forward to playing Champions Online, are no longer interested, because of said unmentionable topic. I think it's unfortunate that Cryptic have adopted the approach they have - of not saying anything about the unmentionables for so long, and then when they do talk about them, we get Bill dancing in circles seemingly trying to confuse us into believing that we secretly love them and have for years.

If they'd simply laid out all of the information and been open and honest with their potential customers at the outset, this topic would still be contentious but not as hot as it is.

It also doesn't help that so many CO fans here follow in Cryptic's footsteps trying to muddy the waters. Eg. there are people in another thread actually trying to claim that pre-orders only became available two weeks ago - when they've been available since February.

If you have lie about a game to get people to buy it, that doesn't send a positive message about the game.

The other problem is that the NDA hasn't been lifted.

I've now actually played the game.

Of course the NDA is still in place, so I can't comment on it on my impression of it. But it's reasonable for anyone to assume that the game has at least some good points or their entire base of 20k beta players would have abandoned them by now.

When the NDA is lifted and Cryptic put all of their unmentionables on the table, the unmentionables will probably still be discussed, but they'll make up a smaller proportion of CO discussion.

I remember when the same arguments were made against subscription based games.  "Wait? I have to pay a monthly fee to play this game? Screw that!"  Oh the internet was full of people saying "You've lost a ton of subscribers because you have to pay to play this game."

Gaming is a business.  They make games to make money.  Period.  To make money they have to entertain you, the gamer.  If they entertain you well enough, you pay, if not, you don't.  That simple.  Gnashing and wailing of teeth won't really change it.  Actual subscription numbers and profit vs. loss will.  Vote with your dollar.  Things are worth what people are willing to pay.

People vocally generally don't like RMT, and the buying and selling of MMO based gold etc.  However, that industry makes billions every year.  So plenty of people obviously do, enough to justify it as an entire economic business.  Same is true for any form of monetizing a game.

So yes, for those upset that a game company is trying to make money any way it can... well.. until you can come up with $40-60 million dollars of your own money and fund your own MMO development team, better just deal with capitalism as it stands.  And to wail about a system without ever having *tried* it?  Really?

Okay, that last argument is kinda weak.  I know.  I can look at lima beans and brussel sprouts and *know* they don't taste good without ever having tried them.

You know, the worst thing was the way we (or at least me) got to know there would be RMTs in the game, this is a pretty serious thing to not even talk about and ignore it for as long as possible and keep evading the real deal about it.

There's that pre-order on Gamestop going for a while without official press releases that pre-orders had started, and there's the bonus in the pre-order stating exactly :

    - 5 Cryptic Bucks which can be used to purchase a variety of premium in-game goods.

This was enough to create the stigma on CO's MT or RMTs, only after days or weeks did they give their first official announcement on them, which made the issue even more unclear, and so it goes on, instead of a damn clarification they keep making it even more confusing, those used with press releases know the broad power of the words "most items are X" (which gives a window for many to be Y or any other kind), "game effects" (like what..? a skill 5 levels before you should be able to get it like the flying for pre-orders?), "also attainable in-game" (in how many years of grinding?) and all the other uncertainty terms and failure comparisons to other MTs like purchasing songs (artist's rights.. anyone?) or WoW's lucky vanity rewards for TCG physical purchases.

It's Cryptic's own fault the issue has grown to this size, mainly because of lack of communication and shady talk.

    agree

    They just not the same.

There are many games out there that have a great community just go the offical forums to check the game out and seek advice.

MMORPG is a great site for checking out what games are out there and whats coming up but sorry the community here tends to be full of people that  have a lot of hate.

Seeing as you are a member since 2005, haven't you yet realized that mmorpg.com is basically the place where people go to bitch about their favorite game?

Most offical forums delete or ban you if you get to out of hand so they all come here.

This has to be the worse site for any real insight to a game and the best site for drama posting. Just go look at those idiot vets on the SWG threads lol. Four years and they are still at it.

Because if you do not agree with it, it must be drama. I make the same statements here as I do on the Champions site. I have yet to see a logical explanation just a variant of, "shut up they can do what they want you QQ 2 much!" This is a consumer issue I have yet to say anything about the game other than I was excited for it to come out, the negative connotation is attatched to them combining as many payment options as possible. If everyone was apathetic or thought it was an excellent idea we would not have long threads on the issue.

To say we should all just let it slide "because," is a bit much.
