I played CoX for 4 year,  then they released the hellish AE, which has ruined the game.  I'm excited about donning my tights again.  Can't wait to see what's in store.  =)

This is going to sound rude and inconsiderate, and I'm sorry if it does.  I absolutely loved CoH when it first came out.  Very refreshing from the tons o' fantasy MMOs that were out on the market at the time.  I had a lot of fun for some time playing it.

However, I would like to sum up this article in a few words...

"We caught wind of the power customization features in the upcoming Champions Online, and needed to have the feature in our game to stay competitive in the super hero MMO genre.  I hope this is a feature that will make you stay with us after September."

I know marketing had to fluff it up with words like "it was an impossible task", and "we desired to with our hearts content", "we love our loyal players and wanted to do this for them /sniff", etc etc.

The truth is, they got nervous at finally having competition in their domain, and needed to add (or copy) a feature.  That's all fine.  It's a free market, but please...  I actually found the article to be a bit transparent.

I think it's great that CoH are doing this.

And there's also the rumoured (entirely unconfirmed) graphics update possibly coming with the next paid expansion.

For an mmo this old to be doing stuff this significant is really great.

Lets not forget DCU is also on the horizon. Between CO and DCU COX is deadmeat. It's time is over. So what if you can change the color of a power. You cannot change emanation points and are still locked into a "class".  Not to mention the game is repetative and that makes for a snorefest. I think it will definitely lose a lot of people to CO AND DCU. Supposedly Marvel is also trying to make an MMO again.

I liked coh a lot when I played my fire/inv tanker to 50... but how many people telling them that it is annoying as hell being in an instance and seeing 8 of the same power go off around you does it take?  Only just now as CO is being developed do we see them invest in their own game.  Personally I was offended when I bought the COV collectors edition and got into the beta and discovered that cov was nothing more than the same ole' regurgitated missions and powers (for the most part) with even the same structures with slightly modified uv maps.  Still too little to late.  They would've had me a lot longer if COV would've been free and these color additions came much sooner.

I still enjoy CoX and don't intend on moving. CoX had the best release of any game and while it has had to go through issues of balance as more people jumped onto the FotM builds as we, the player base devised new ways to build the 'best' stat based toons we could.

AE is excellent if it's used to create new story content, as an XP machine it's sufficient for those who want to just run to 50 but it's true use is to create new story arcs and see what other imaginative players have designed. I still enjoy coming across a gem of a mission arc and playing it through with friends.

I still find a lot to do in CoX and I've not had a cchance to play every story arc in the game yet. It's something I'm slowly building up to. It's still the basics however that hold me in, good people to play with in a decent community, good story arcs that are worth reading and following, the travel powers never stop being fun and trying new ways of doing things. <shrug> I enjoy CoX and that for me, and many others is the primary requirement of any game we play.

Won't be jumping ship because it's just a 'new' game or fanbois insist it's better. If CoX ever loses the gloss it has for me then I'll consider seeking a new MMO but with what's on the horizon I'll most likely move to a sci-fi MMO and give them a look.

The customization option may only be 'fluff' but I'll be changing mosyt of my toons power colours to better fit with themes, costumes and simple role-play elements. It may not be a lot at the end but it is something many current players are looking forward to.

Too little, too late for me, and so transparent. if CO fails I'll keep it movin no problem, but CoX has spit in my face one time too many.

After TR dudded at launch and NCsoft West was looking to keep its more successful titles going - and with CoH/V was still pulling in decent revenue, thanks to a committed player base - it was then they started up a new studio focused on increasing CoH/V's player base by buying out the IP rights from Cryptic.

CoH/V has to continue to perform or else Paragon Studios is going to have all these pretty new toys taken away from it. I14 / MA might have have attracted some new / exited players to give CoH/V a shot, but I don't think the way Paragon Studios handled them was particularly good as a retention strategy. I15 was a joke of an issue. I16 - as currently announced - lacks any new game play content to attract anyone who doesn't like CoH/V as it already is. All hopes are on Going Rogue to get new players in / exited players back in and for Booster Packs to keep revenues high.

I'm going to keep playing CoH/V and play ChampO, but I know which title has me more excited and it isn't CoH/V.

I've been involved with the CO Beta for about three months now and as much as I want that game to succeed I don't think it's going to be any real threat to any MMO at this point.  They are pushing the release way to quickly and the game world is setup to the point that it not only allows soloing through the whole game (which I encourage, to a point) it almost encouraged people to be completely anti-social.  Zones seem smaller than CoX, enemy groups aren't really as interesting, they won't be launching with many of the promised features (can't say much more than that with NDA as of yet but prepare to be dissapointed) and the whole thing just feels unpolished.  Heck, you can get from beginning to end-game with only 2-3 powers for the most part.  The game suffers badly for PC players because it is dumbed down for console players and you feel it big time.

On the other hand, I absolutely love their costume creator, assuming they clean it up a little.  I also love the ability to have powers originate from multiple body parts so that even the same powers on different characters can look like different powers.  The game is quite pretty to look at all in all, it just lacks any real substance.  Also, the admin's complete lack of caring on the beta forums seems very old-school CoH.  Even if a thread gets an overwhelming amount of posts in favor of something the mods tend to say "Well we like it this way so it stays this way."  And that was the old-school CoH mod attitude that made me leave the game until NCSoft took over and turned it around to make the game fun again.

All I can say is that after being in the beta I will most certainly not be purchasing CO.  I'm sure a lot of people will be but the game lacks the staying power and community of CoH.  Granted, it's a beta community, that could change.  But sadly I don't see it coming.

I am glad that CoX is doing this. It shows that ideas that were seemingly dead can have life. Now if they can get a new game engine and put Vehicles in the game, they will be far ahead of the compitition.

I think CoX is making a huge mistake with the Going Rogue expansion. They should have just made City of Heroes 2. The game is too old to start making expansions, and the current engine just can't do what the players want. They should have made a sequel with all the GR features in it. A CoH2 would probably trump CO and DCUO.

Great Info, thanks much.  Wish there was more positive to say but the truth is so much appreciated.   I am hooked on coh/v again (at the higher levels and building the locked classes after making 50 char is very cool).   I gave up too early after playing in the begining.   I did preorder CO and will check it out.   Thanks again for sharing your experience with the game.

Coir and Unsub,  Nicely said.  I will check out co but thats my problem,  I check out all thats new and looks good.   I do find myself comming back to coh/v though.   With the new powers and Rogue....  Should be interesting.   Interveiw mentioned cov was rushed out so they "used coh as a template" wich they admitted they should have done differently.   Rogue is their way of making that mistake right.   We will see.   Soon I hope.

I agree but at the same time I disagree.

I agree because I am very much looking forward to a genuine sequel for CoX from a company that obviously has a better grasp on what they are doing than the previous owners.  What they have turned this game into in the short time they have owned it is nothing short of incredible.  A game built from the ground up by them dedicated to super heroes would be happy time for me.

On the other hand, the players have put serious work into CoX.  If you have seen some of the supergroup bases they are incredible.  The time and dedication some people have invented in characters, supergroups, and the game in general is impressive.  The players with a 60+ month vet badge sort of speak for themselves I think.  While sequels are inevitable (and hopefully on a horizon) I think creating a new game so soon after the release of the Architect system would be a bit counter-productive.

However I somewhat think that Going Rogue will be the last expansion before a sequel.  I could be wrong of course but I am one of those people who think the game has pretty much run it's course.  Not the game itself understand, but the mechanics.  There are so many things the devs could do with this game if they got to start over from scratch and I for one am looking forward to that day.

I've played CityX off and on for a few since a couple months before release of Villians.  But I see this for what it is.  Other superhero MMO's are coming out, and you can have custom power colors.  Champions announced that way back, CityX said man..we need to find a way to do that with our engine!  So they found out it was possible, and figured hopefully get it done before the release of CO or right before, in order to keep subscribers.

Now here is the fun part.  Lets say CO takes away a portion of the player base, we do a high figure of 70%.  That leaves CoX with roughly 30k subscribers(going of the 100k I saw still active a while back)  NCsoft, cancels the expansion, and closes doors within SIX months.

Lets say, its a normal figure, about 30%.  NcSoft doesn't do any changes. Neither for a lower figure.

Aion is released.  Total hit, sells a million copies in NA/Europe.  CoX loses funding instantly.  After all, we have to keep the investors happy.

Guild Wars 2 is released..do we see something here?  Ncsoft only wants hits and massive money.  Look at the droppage of TR and AA.  Instantly killed once they didnt' meet expectations.  Didn't matter they were making a profit(AA was still making money compared to cost of server and 1 developer) and TR was actually picking up steam once RG was out of the picture.

NcSoft is a horrible company, and IF CoX loses any large amount of players, its funding will cease.  They are dropping money into it to prevent that, hopefully they do, but as other stated, it was on the back burner to TR for years in funding because NCsoft cares about one thing and one thing only: The bottom Line.

I played COH from launch and had fun for a good eight months before I moved on and I remember the posts asking about customizable powers and them saying they couldn't do it as well.  I'm glad for once to see a company give the players what they have been asking for which I think is a bigger rarety than it should be in mmo's.  Almost every game out there seems to have "that ultimate feature" that the players want and far too few companies deliver that other than this I'd have to say CCP with Eve adding actual avatars are the last two I remember right off hand.

but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

Bah 90% of the fun of any of these "Superhero" games is making the character.

    After that it's snoresville.

  • ChromeBallzChromeBallz Member UncommonPosts: 342

THE big problem for CO will be that there is no variety in environments or mobs as you level up. There's no incentive to make alts. And given the fact that it's pretty damn easy to get to 40 (max level), you're looking at a game which will make the lifetime sub buyers commit suicide.

Every character gets the exact same missions. Each character goes through the exact same areas, with just 2 notable exceptions at certain level ranges, where you have a dazzling 2 choices.

Not to mention that they put in quests before even trying them out themselves first, some which are simply impossible to finish, something which the designer would definately have noticed if he gave it a single testrun. I know it's beta, but this is just really bad, especially for a game due out next month.

CO has the potential, but it's not living up to it, not even close. Let the enthusiasts and fanbois pay for the subscription beta, and the smart people will wait 6-12 months for the game to mature.

I can't believe some of the junk I'm reading in this thread by people who seem to have never played CoX. City of Villains is nothing like City of Heroes and is for all intents and purposes a different game with very unique archetypes and content. AE didn't ruin the game but made it like a thousand times more awesome for those who bother to do something besides farm and there are an ever growing number of us who do.  There is no more grinding the same kind of missions over and over because you and everyone else in the game can create your own missions and the devs are even talking about allowing players to create their own maps in the future rather than using the thousand some that are currently available for MA. They couldn't do power customization any sooner because they just didn't have the staff or the resources and now since they formed their own company they do, simple as that. Everything is not a cynical marketing ploy. With the continuing power proliferation releases they are moving further and further away from being wedded to a "class" system so everybody has much more freedom than ever before when it comes to power selection.

I wish CO and DCUO all the success in the world and can't wait to play them but the CoX player base isn't going anywhere except Rogue!

You lost me right there.  Why do you think they didnt' have the staff or resources?  Tabula Rasa.  Amazing how after NCsoft comes to the conclusion that they either have to put money into CoX or lose non- 3/4yr vets.  NcSoft assumes that by adding money in(Look at their current promotion "Through Thick and Thin, exclusive badge for staying subscribed during August through November" pretty much sums your "Everything is not a cynical marketing ploy." as "Everything from us is a cynical marketing ploy"  I find the games both versions to be quite the same, except CoH has more StrikeForces.  The classes are different, but not by much, as it isn't like you play one and have totally different power sets exclusive(at least not anymore other than a select few)

There's a few things I like about CoH/CoV that keep me coming back:

    1)  The story and background is interesting.  I like the whole Heroes versus Villains faction-on-faction warfare idea with Arachnos and Longbow.  I also like all the side villains and how well developed they are (Crey, Circle of Thorns, etc.).

    2)  PvP...yeah it isn't what it used to be, but it can be fixed.  There is no PvP in Champions from what I hear.

    3)  Easy to learn/hard to master gameplay.  This is one of the easiest games to pick up and learn, but has a surprising amount of challenge in terms of character development.

    4)  I like the crafting and design options for supergroup bases and lairs.  Mission architect is also a nice feature.  While Champions has a lot of character creation potential, CoH/CoV has a lot more than character creation for those who like to create.

    5)  Neat events from the development staff.

I don't see Champions doing much (at least initially) to replace or improve of these strongpoints for me.

Leaving for Champions Online?  Meh, the consensus on Freedom server is that most aren't interested in it.  I will surely play it, but there's no way I'd leave City of Heroes.  It might get rid of some of the flighty kids though.  So, that's a plus.

Oh teh noes, the CoX fanboys aren't excited that a new game is going to be released that might threaten their fanbase? I'm sure Cryptic NEVER would of expected that to happen.

First of all, I've played a few months of CoX over the last year or two, and I'll admit it's a very entertaining game. However, I've also played a few days of CO and I can already tell you that it is alot more fun. The CoX fanboys keep saying that all CO has is better graphics, and that's just not the case. It's the engine of the game that makes it more fun. CoX's heavy reliance on instances is just plain absurd looking back on it. It just slowed everything down. Why do you need a travel power if 95% of the game takes place in an office building that makes your travel power useless?

CO does use instances, but only when they make sense. When they make a mission, instead of thinking "How can we turn this into a building?" they think "Does this mission fit into the enviroment of this zone, or should we have the player enter a building?". This keeps the missions fun and unique. Alot better than CoX's "Go back to the same office you just visited 25 times and kill another enemy/ find another document/ rescue another civilian (Even if you're a villain.).

After playing CO, I can't imagine purchasing CoX time ever again. A couple weeks ago, before I had played CO, I was looking forward to both CO and the new features that were in store for CoX (power spectrum and Going Rogue expansion pack). Now all I have to say is that the only way I could be pulled back into CoX is if Cryptic starts slacking off on the updates for CO in the future (They have talked about adding new zones, power frameworks, and even vehicles your hero can use for their travel power) or if "Going Rogue" has alot more more to offer other than a new zone, the ability to switch alignments and new enemies to fight.

    1. The "Champions" PnP universe that CO is based on is just as deep as the CoX universe, if not more. At least that's what the people who played the PnP tell me. When they aren't busy complaining that CO isn't exactly like the PnP. From what I've seen, the "Champions" are longbow and "VIPER" is arachnos. There are tons of side villain factions too (Hunter Patriots, Purple Gang, etc.)

2.There is ton of PvP in CO, and from what I've played, it's extremely fun. By the time the pvp in CoX is fixed, CO will have perfected many unique, entertaining modes of PvP.

    3. Hard to master gameplay isn't always the best route. I don't want to spend time and effort calculating the best class/powerset combo to win in PvP. I want to be able to make the character I want with the powers I want without being weaker than anyone else.

    4. Crafting is very fun in CO, with tons of specializations for the player to choose from. Maybe CO doesn't have anything like the mission architect yet, but with features like the Nemesis creator it's obvious that Cryptic isn't afraid to embrace user-created content in CO. Either way, while "CoX has alot more for people who like to create", I don't play a mmorpg to sit around and create missions. I have Spore for that.

    5. Cryptic has stated numerous times that the world of CO will be constantly changing, so I'm sure the game will have it's fair share of events.
