I'd prefer unbound items, just because it is more relastic. But I know, such a game would have a immense problem with RMT (imagine raidloot on Ebay...)

I really don't like the concept of bound of items, because it's not terribly realistic and is an artificial way to control the in-game economy, but I do understand that it's probably a necessary mechanic in some games to prevent inflation.

Given a choice, however, I far prefer item degradation over time to bound items.

EVE Online has neither "bound" equipment nor degradation over time. Instead, ships naturally blow up a lot and are irrevocably lost, and this keeps inflation under control organically. It's one of the few games that needs neither bound items or degradation to prosper.

hehe I still remember the time I grouped with the low level ogre warrior in EQ with a fungi tunic....brings back good memories...but yeah I think bind items is a necessary evil so you can balance content for normal players.... you can thank my generation for screwing that up for you younger players!!! hehe because we would put the fungi tunic on the lowbies woot woot :p

Just say no to bound items for 2009 and every year thereafter!

Let the individual and the free market reign even in game! Even though it’s their private server in this case.

Look. My belief is this energy spent combating RMT can be spent in providing content instead.

Besides RMT is just growing and companies are looking to put closet RMT alternatives in their games.

(See SOE’s FTP Free Realms, EQ2, and Cryptic’s upcoming Champions Online for just some examples)

Well the important point you completely forgot was that the reason for bound items is that when you see someone with the item you know they earned it and did not buy it.  That is a significant point for most of us.  You must have been spoiled by all the f2p games.  Anything is for sale in them.  Why they don't do as well.

  • I don't play games that use the bind on pickup mechanic (I'm more open minded about bind on equip).  I guess that says all I need to say about my feeling on the subject.

Because the alternative is to have items break permanently, and people would whine like little babies if their super-duper magic sword they spent a month working to get broke before they were done playing with it.
