I'm from Australia and I'm really curious to know which servers will give me the best connection, especially considering that the combat is pretty full on in Darkfall.
Has anyone else tried playing from Australia?
And how do you actually download the client?
I went to www.darkfallonline.com and tried to get the client, but when I go to 'Buy Darkfall', it just asks me to subscribe. Can I only download the client after I've paid for my first months subscription? How much does the client cost? Or is the client free? It doesn't make sense at that site.
The World looks fantastic especially when i run it on high graphics. Fighting is like playing CoD4 with an axe or sword and i play a lot of CoD4. This is deffinitely a pvp game and you will get ganked and die a lot. But thats part of the fun. The first day alone i was ganked 6 times. Half the time they didnt take my stuff bc it was so crappy. Fighting in general is just fun to me. Youll also need to find a clan as soon as possible bc darkfall is a harsh world. The newbie zones do get raided so work on that sprint skill A guy ganked me early yesterday and took all my stuff. later that day my clan leader decided to raid a small clan house, guess who was there? needless to say, his sprint skill was higher...its a smaller world than you think. Theres a lot of crafting involved from what ive seen, at the moment im just gathering materials for one big craft fest at the end of the week. Im eager to get back in and see what i can discover today.
I just started on the NA server and the buy button is on the right side of the website. And yes you can only play after youve bought the game. your first month is free and it costs $50 for the game and 14.99 a month.

Is it just me or does this sound more like an advertise then some review? Look at the details. Its like a diary of a 10 year old.
But if purpose was advertisment then,, COD4=fastpaced, Ganking=Sadists, harsh world=explorer/?
then theres some random crafting sentence... which ofc talks about the crafting system and lastly its the "Cant wait to get back" sentance
then ofc is the "buy it here sign.
Its the DF community trademarks made by a newly created acount.

*clapclap* Nice read. I think you hit the nail on the head here.
yeah god forbid we appeal to a different audience. Alienating ourselves is the only way to keep things fresh and new. We should just go back to pen and paper.

The only people who have been alienated have been the RPG players, and it's the developers that have been doing it. Back when UO was first announced, guess who it was marketed to? Ultima was and is still considered among the hardest core Computer RPGs. The game was built around the idea of making a character and letting it live in the world of Brittania. Death by another player in PvP combat was just one of the many risks. PvP as a feature was just that, a feature among many other features that made the game what it was. Now, PvP is the raison d'etre of MMORPGs, and Darkfall is the very epitome of that. Log in and killkillkill! Forget virtually living another life. Forget story, whether player created or as part of the game's overall lore. Forget everything. Just gear up and enter the fray. Just like Darkfall.
Given the choice, I'd much rather go back to PnP. At least in a d20 session, I can be reasonably sure that the people I'm playing with have respect for the game. Not to mention an above average intellect. That was one of the beauties of PnP. You kinda had to be smart to get into it. With MMORPGs, they let any idiot with a credit card in.

ill give you that one, but i still like to play it and i will continue you to do so. Thats the only thing im saying. Not " im better than you" or " everyone else sucks", one simple statement and everyone brings on the hate.

Who cares about your crowd. The majority rules so if I were you I would adapt or stop playing mmo.
Darkfall is the archetype of what the MMORPG genre needs right now -- variety and differentiation. The sad thing is, WOW's crushing market dominance has had such a powerful effect on the genre virtually every mainstream MMO that's been released since it has been more or less completely a blatant ripoff of it, to the point that new MMOs are expected to replicate the WOW/EQ formula or face a mainstream reviewer & player backlash as Darkfall has.
the MMO genre *needs* games like DF (MO, EVE, others) to do well, otherwise we'll be inundated with even more uninspired & uninnovative WOW-clones (Aion *cough*).

Well, part of the problem is developers promising the world and delivering a rock. I became aware of DF about 3 years ago through another RPG forum. Reading the details got me all excited. I thought "Finally! Someone gets it!" Now that DF is out, the reality is that they only got part of it. Of course, they COULD be working on the mother of all patches to try to bring the reality back in line with the design specs as originally published, but the damage is already done. The game is nothing but a MMOFPS with swords catering to retards. I guess the good thing is that as long as they're running around in there flinging shit at eachother, maybe their numbers will thin in other games. Who knows?
EDIT: Just to add, I agree with your last line, there. Perhaps Aventurine is doing Star Vault a favor by saying "See, this is how NOT to hype/release/maintain a game." I just wish they'd put the hammer down on the MO community. I lurked for a year before joining up, and in that time, I can see how it's slipping into ForumFail part 2.

So much hate for Darkfall. I played it and quit, but it was a good game. I've quit a lot of games where I just felt like I'd wasted my time. Games where I play and level and level and never face a challenge all the way to max level.
Darkfall definitely isn't for everyone. It's PvP, too much for me a bit and I'm almost exclusively PvP. I'd like to see enough mobs added to skill level at the least.
The controls are very awkward at first, people knock it, but you get used to it. People talk about it just being a click fest, but it's just a different way. I'd rather have to aim and click then click the same sequence of skills 1-2-1-2-3 until an easy mob is dead. I do wish they'd mixed the two together forcing the aim and click along with allowing you to change up the attack with skills at the same time. That's a minor beef though. I still enjoyed the combat, especially the way archery worked.
You get frustrated in Darkfall, especially if you're like me and won't macro. It's not that you can't ever win a fight, I still won a lot of fights, it's just that there are no skills to use for so long, and nothing to fight to raise those skills at a reasonable rate. I enjoyed playing, I just think they fell short on what they put in the game.
I think most people that bash the game never played it, or don't really like free for all PvP. I'd never bash it, but I will give people the truth and say it's not for everyone.

Dont you mean another expansion? , With all the stuff they added in July Tasos called it an expansion LoL this beats the record made by SoE's every 6 months!
I'm pretty sure the "next" big patch they come up with will be called another expansion.

Not a personal attack but most DF posts tend to come out this way (atleast those in favor of).
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....
Hey, look on the bright side, guys. It works just as good as a "reasons to hate Darkfall" post.
It helps to know the lingo. First, "hardcore PvP" means "We invite shooter players to come into our world and take over. RPG is the new FPS!"
All we need now is for "frag" to become a part of the MMO lingo, and my heart will be truly broken.

Not to mention an above average intellect. That was one of the beauties of PnP. You kinda had to be smart to get into it. With MMORPGs, they let any idiot with a credit card in.

Just like Darkfall.

ill give you that one, but i still like to play it and i will continue you to do so. Thats the only thing im saying. Not " im better than you" or " everyone else sucks", one simple statement and everyone brings on the hate.
Who cares about your crowd. The majority rules so if I were you I would adapt or stop playing mmo.

The only posts I read in threads are my own.
