I would love to find an mmo with an immersive roleplaying community. I'm talking about people who know the lore of the game and fit their characters into the universe. Not the people who take a cut out personality of an archetype and paste it into the game.
My second condition is the game can not look like a cartoon. I am so very tired of that look.
My third condition is no power gamers. Let me explaine what I mean. While playing an mmo today, you run across people that are spamming attacks and spells, bashing their keyboards into dust, and blazing through content with no regarde to why they are killing monster x, or bad guy #2. I want to enjoy the effect of my fireball and see that it made a diffrence; not fling 3 more as fast as I can.
Some of you might be thinking "wait for Star Wars: the Old Rebpulic", and let me tell you, I am waiting, with great anticipation. However, I love Wizards, and would like to find a game with magic.

As for roleplaying mmorpgs, you need to look mmorpgs with good lore or little less popular mmorpgs. Example Lotro, Ryzom or something like that. As for powerplayers, You can't avoid them, every mmorpg will be filled with powerplayers who has no clue about what lore or RP is. The mmorpg community has changed from lore, adventure and challenge to powerplaying, farming and snack food easy games.
MMORPG.COM has worst forum editor ever exists
I would think you would need to find a game with RP servers. Warhammer has them. At least they did, haven't played in 5 or 6 months, but I did RP on their servers. I would expect EQ2 to have them too. Roleplaying is not very popular in an MMORPG.It has become min/max, full steam ahead to endgame. I don't get it at all. Shouldn't the journey...i.e. the "game", be enjoyable and not a grind to endgame? But those of us who want to stop and smell the fireball are a minority I'm afraid.
I wish you luck. Nimue server on DAoC and Blackwater Raiders server in WoW both had decent communities. Not sure how they are now as it has been some time since I have visited either.
the whole idea an mmorpg is about the journey and not endgame, is killed by lvls - especially the fast gained lvls. and the items...who can truely be happy about an item that in 5 lvls get replaced by something better...5 lvls that takes less than a day to gain...even worse when thhose can be gained as fast solo as in groups.
for the RP. well EQ2 do have an RP server and there is RP guilds, with ppl who know the lore and all, even if the lore is very very long to get through, since for what I understand a big part of it is taken from EQ1, and EQ1 were a 5 yo game when eq2 were new, and EQ2 itself almost 5 years old already. buut happy reading if decide to go for eq2....there is a pretty big RP community on the RP server
Well you could try Planeshift it's a RP heavy game.......
While graphically not pretty the game tries to be a true RP game. Real world talk isn't allowed in chat channel and is lowly adding player controlled content.
Try Everquest 2, on one of the RP servers (Antonia Bayle or Lucan D'Lere). When I played, there was roleplaying and roleplayers everywhere - even the group invites I got were in character.
I hear AB is being overrun with non-roleplayers just because of its high population, so if you want a higher roleplayer density, you might want to play on LD instead.
Im not sure how the neverwinternights 2 commuunity is but 1 used to have RP semi permanent mod worlds people made for RP..and for a really off the wall suggestion you might try Second Life which is hard to understand at first but once you know how to find places you can find roleplayer communites..is no game element whatsoever in most cases but its fully user created . There are a variety of cyberpunk to fantasy areas to RP but also tons of adult sex content to watch out for to.
Yeah, Second Life is really sex-oriented... but if you're looking for RP it is basically one giant sandbox. Also, some players build interfaces as HUDs for their various games: HP/MP level, status and all that. There are kill-zones (they generally just send you back to your home location) but they don't have a real effect that I know about. I generally just use it as a 3D immersive chat program.
I've seen a few RP locations that are pretty intense, all user-built as mentioned before... people buy or build animations/scripted objects to interact with their environment. My friend has an assassinblade that is good for a laugh. They offer a person a "hug" and a confirmation pops up for the other player (hug request objects that animate avatars are not uncommon) if they accept my friend's knife animates them both so he yanks the other avatar in, spins them aorund and slashes their throat with a spray of blood. Damn funny.
Play MUDs.

Roleplaying is dumb. Why would even want to act like a orc or undead or gnome or whatever. and talk like a dwarf or act like a
dwarf. Im not trying to troll, but its seriously sad that people actually get into a mmo SO much that they act like a character in the game.
seriously if you wanna act like an orc go try out for lord of the rings lol
I also would suggest one of the roleplay servers in EQ2. Unfortunately, there's just no getting around the power gamers. You'll find them wherever you go. It's very easy to find roleplay guilds in EQ2 with the great guild tools they have in game. You should be able to find one that avoids lore from outside the game.
If your looking for RP UO has always had a pretty strong RP community. The Skill system instead of levels has helped that a good bit and some of the skills make for some ideal RP situations. Skills come in many varieties, everything from Begging to Ninjitsu, to Magery, to Taming, to Necro's and Chivalry and so on and so on. Currently you can only be Human or an Elf but the Stygian Abyss expansion is comming very soon and adding the Gargoyle as a playable race. Now other than those three races, once in game you can find a body sculptor to change your appearance if you wish to something else. Some of the options are Vampire, Orc, Juka (Reptile looking face) and there are more but I can't remember them all.
Aside from that you can own a house in UO as well. Can be customized a great deal. Things such as furniture (That you actually sit in and etc), chests, plants, statues, paintings etc etc etc can be placed in your house and locked down allowing you to decorate it in any way you like. One of the few MMO's where you can be what you want and makes you feel apart of the world. Yes, the graphics are dated (Even with the new client) and yes it is 2D yet no other fantasy MMO has come along offering the same or even similar to what UO has.
If your looking for RP it's definetly worth a look. Trial is free and requires no CC. If UO isn't your thing, gl and hope you find that right MMO for you.
