the old Jedi system was fantastic!! I remember back in day when I was playing and saw like very very few low count of Jedi around, I felt great and happy full of joy and was amaze to see them, it was so epic!! I stayed around watching two of them duel and after the duel I ask a questions on how they became a Jedi and there responds was kinda cocky but i was still happy "We are the chosen ones" and they took off. So every since that day I trained my as off search my as off to become like them but my time was cut short due to the update I was so angry!! I wanted to be the chosen one so bad and now everyone can be a Jedi from the start, and that is when i left SWG for two years, I then came back and start leveling my straight out the box Jedi.
I want more MMORPG the way the old SWG did it. Every one with normal class was unique and powerful and the Jedi was just epic. Why was it change? even when I read about the change it make me upset.

You and about 200,000 others. IN the end we have to accept that the old SWG is gone. I know that a lot of players are hoping (almost depending) that SW:TOR will be SWG reborn. HOwever it will not be and if players go into SW:TOR with that expectation they will be disapointed, continue to be left wanting, and living in the past.
Old SWG is Dead. As hard as it is, time to move on.
LLyncu: Star Wars Galaxies (Europe-Chimaera)
Torrential: DAOC (Pendragon)
Awned: World of Warcraft (Lothar)

What good is it if you CANNOT be a jedi?
I love sandbox games, but i found the original SWG to be very boring...
The PvP was pretty bad, there was only the 'vette to go into back then, it was just a lot of mission grinding.. medic buffs wer out of hand.. Player towns were just fantastic of course.
I was one of the original beta testers of that game, "second shuttle" as a matter o fact (bet i still have the discs they mailed me around here someplace). I remember the day Koster announced to us they were going to release the game (in its current state), the beta boards went crazy, telling him it wasnt ready.. It wasn't.
Prior to the NGE, the game needed work, (obviously) the NGE wasnt the answer.
All that said, with the way MMOs have become, I'd probably go back in a heartbeat if it were possible.
There was alot to fix with Pre CU but the main things was Content and a new tutorial, which it needed badly and never got until it was ruined by the NGE.
To be honest I think the sw ip is what dragged it down, and frankly I could have lived without, but other than that, hell ya, I miss old swg too. what a great game.
I miss certain elements of SWG.
The crafting, non-combat, housing and community elements were fantastic and have never been done better in any subsequent MMO as far as I'm concerned (with the possible exception of EVE), but SWGs meta-game itself.. the grinding, the combat, PVE, PVP, path to Jedi, storyline, continuity .. well, it sucked to high heaven tbh and we're well rid of it.

What good is it if you CANNOT be a jedi?
Well in the movie everyone was not a Jedi. In the movie, people had to be chosen by birth or by showing the Jedi you are the one by doing many years of testing and dedication. People who chose not to be a Jedi had there own powerful skills and dedication of there training. Even people without the force gave the Jedi a good battle and many Jedi failed. I met many players in the old SWG that liked there class and chosen not to be a Jedi and many took down Jedi players. So that is why I did not understand that damn update cause not everyone wanted to be the Jedi. " I have been a bounty hunter for a long time... I think it is time for me to become a jedi for ever" Old SWG gave people a choice and achievement for everyone.
Don't be defeatist.
A battle is never lost until the last fighter gives up.
Who knows if Smedley might not, as one last mad throw of the dice, resurrcect a few pre-cu servers? Or the Emu boys finally launch a workable game? Everything is always possible.
After trying/testing/playing many MMOrpg's after SWG I came to the conclusion that I sure miss SWG, but the main thing I miss is the way how people used to play this genre.
i really miss the old community in this game, as well as running a city and grouping with friends.
there were so many issues with SWG, but man, i'd sign up in a instant if they went back to pre-cu, and probably consider it even if it was post cu. so many great memories.... killing our mayor so he could clone closer to the shuttleport, to make it to our city spot on naboo to place a city hall, in that mad rush of a day when they went live.... good times... it's amazing how bad parts of the game were, and so easily forgivable. hell, then entire time i played, till they got rid of them, i don't think they ever fixed pikemen.... but the imps damn sure got there stupid little hats fixed!
when the stylists exploit happened, and anyone with basic entertainer, could give any race, any hairstyle.... good stuff... my wookiee never lost his zabrak head spikes and ponytail haha
hope the emulators get there server going
I wasn't a Jedi, I did the village but I did it more because I was on Dath alot. Master Swrdsman/ Ranger. Me and Oggat had good times killing the Gurrek, the Baz, the occasional Krayt. Tapes from the Matauders. Might be dead but it was a good time. Yea, I miss it too
Still thinking of you old friend. I miss the Docs, I miss the Ents, I miss Oggat and Warmaster and our wookie guild leader. He loved to just do resource surveys and submit them to the reso sites. Then cl1 and he was pwned on site by just about everything.
Good memories before that though
I miss the old swg pre-cu miss killing the jedi with bounty hunters the cantinas even the buff lines and the hunts we use to go on the roleplaying parties I could go on and on but in the end left me wanting havent found a game where you can put up a tent anywhere and hang out with such a awesome community like we once had
You want loot? Go kill some npcs, you wanna visit hades? come find ME, and dont forget to bring coins for the ferryman,
I miss the core mechanics of SWG and the potential it had but I don't miss the state of the game and what SOE did to it. I mean the game was ruined a long time before the CU even and every patch just made it worse. The reason I stuck with SWG in Pre CU was because I hoped they would see sense and fix everything they broke and add in content. However they didn't and just made everyting 100 times worse.
My fave time in the game was just before Vehicles came out because the cities were full of creatures and just gave it that full of life feel. Just remember walking into cities and seeing all the creatures animating amazingly for their day, looked so realistic and the sound of the Dewbacks.
Then vehicles came in and made mounts useless.
How did you become a jedi in the old SWG?
Originally, you couldn't. Jedi was a feature that was claimed to be in the game at launch, but wasn't added until later (as opposed to all the features that were supposed to be in at launch, but never made it into the game at all). Eventually, a patch added Jedi to the game, where you had to master five random professions to unlock Jedi. Nobody did so for a few months, so they added holocrons to the game that told you four of the five professions you needed to master to unlock your Jedi character. A few people unlocked after this, but it still wasn't enough, so for the Christmas holiday, they gave everyone free holicrons, to help nudge everyone away from actually playing the game in a manner they enjoyed, to grinding the game by doing things they had no interest in doing, which convinced many of them to quit.
This was remedied by changing the path to Jedi from mastering random professions to a quest unlocking grind. When this grind was implemented, the vast majority of the playerbase began doing it. It was interpreted by the morons in charge of the game as everyone wanting to be a Jedi. What was never considered by those idiots was the fact that the new Jedi grind was the only real content added to the main game since launch. They could have added a Candyland adventure and the majority of the playerbase, who had been begging for some content since the game launched, would have done it. Looking back, Candyland based content would have been better than what they actually did.
yep
Swg was a virtual world, mmos today are just fighting games.
Anyone had a chance to try Fallen Earth? I heard a lot of pre-cu vets are going to play it and that the game is a lot like SWG (big virtual world, some sandbox elements, skill-based leveling, cooperative community).
I hope they do a trial soon.
A trial would be good. I haven't really been following FE. I have to question a smaller studio's ability to pull off a big budget game (which is what FE certainly appears to be going for).
Indeed.
SWG's social and crafting systems were quite innovative, and more importantly, fun. The rest of it was an uninspired grind, and quite poorly executed with respect to the source material. Good riddance.
Sadly, you are so right.
I can't help thinking how modern and innovative that game would still be if we could have the pre-CU version with new graphics. Player housing, socializing, non-combat classes, deep crafting and ressource system.
If someone released something remotely like this with 2009 graphics it would be a popular at least on EVE or Lotro levels.
It is such a waste to see developer after developer failing in making wow clones and you have such potential lying right there..
I consider the original SWG developers to be visionaries...

What good is it if you CANNOT be a jedi?
IN that time period of SW lore there weren't many jedi, SoE changing the game so everyone could be a jedi easily bastardized the lore and killed the game.
As for the OP, I miss it also. We have ways to play Pre-Cu still but it just isn't the same.
If Swg was around today in its old state it would be very popular (Atleast equal to Eve's numbers) SoE are a bunch of mindless chimps.
R.i.p. Swg.
