Crafting is all not too bad. same ole' same ole. get x item then make into y item. you need to gather items to make into armor weapons, food ect , most the stuff pre lvl 30 is not all bad, after lvl 30 you use your abyss points to get weapons, armor and what not. There is a grind to craft and kinda of boring in a way. Not sure if you played LoTRo or not but there is a "make" all button in which you can make how ever many items and it does it all on auto pilot. So i use that time to cook food and use the bio. Now after 1.5 goes out there are alot of new items you can make and better so not 100% sure how that will play out
Played Aoc/DDO/FFXI/WAR / LoTRo / CO / Aion Playing Rift
Waiting for FFXIV to be the game it should. so sad =(
The actual crafting is the same as wow. click button and watch bar.
I'm not sure if Aion fans are worse than Darkfall fans.
The above pretty much summarized Aion crafting process, just with slight tweaks included.
You set the recipe that you want to use, how many units you want to create, and watch the success/failure bars go up until whichever one maxes out first. There are also chances for the craft to yield a high-quality product.
So in end-game, which items are better? Crafted or drops?
As of 1.0 dropped items are better after lvl 30. But after 1.5 hits looks like will be close to the same. Dropped item close to HQ crafted item. Not 100% sure tho =(

The basic mechanism to create an item is the same. Get X amount of each item and click create.
However the devil is in the details. Due to the way components and workorders work out; you will nto be making 1000s of trash items per se. The work order ARE trash items but they are basically a money sink you could level without doing any gathering. At the same time leveling via making real items is not really possible do to limits on drops and such.
Why is this important? Well in WoW or EQ2 or LOTRO or similar games the lower level stuff is literally flooded with trash leveling items.
Now that is the basics. The next major detail is the Mastery level. The simple click interface has a chance to crit. Some of the best items that one can craft may require and 2nd tier crit to be used as a material in the top tier item. To make the best of the best you may need to crit a 2nd tier and then get lucky enough to crit the top tier.
So what does this mean in a nutshell? Rarity/Scarcity. That is the element in which they differ. Because in the end crafting is about a market and without rarity crafting is kind of well crap.
Part of this is based up the normal enforcement of farming various drops and resources but since leveling is not tied to the making of real items. And there is quite an element of luck and other planning their is more of an emphasis on creating a market that is not flooded.

Crafted items are in general better than random drops. Abyss point items are better than crafted but very expensive.
Well the answer is both yes and no.
