My only concern about the lifetime sub is that they will not put out enough content in the first year. I love the game, but progression in beta is very fast. I am afraid of getting multiple characters the the max level and running out of things to do.
What are your opinions on the lifetime sub, and the topic of being able to enjoy this game for at least a years time?
Comments
For LoTRO, I did it and am definitely glad I did. I wouldn't consider it for this game because of the RMT situation, which opens up a serious loophole where you could end up having to pay in the future even with your lifetime account.
If LoTRO had the RMT looming over it's head, I would not have done it.
YMMV.
And we have a winner!
Don't do it, you would be paying for a lifetime sub for incomplete access to a game.
I guess if they had an expansion you wouldn't get a lifetime sub for that either, since you would have to pay for additional content (in the future)

Expansions are a different matter altogether, and you know it too, so why even try that tactic?
RMT != expansions.
Expansion = Expanding the game in new directions.
RMT = Contracting the game so that players have to pay extra for the full content.

From your point of view, it is better to pay every month for an imcomplete game, atleast with a lifetime sub, after 13 months of gaming the game become free. You are the one who choose to use the RMT or not. Also, after 13 months, the game becomes free for lifetime sub, so if you want, you can spend that extra money in RMT, but remember, you don't have too.
I am going to do the lifetime sub, I played CoX for over 2 years and I would've love to had a lifetime sub, so I can jump right back in anytime I want. Don't worry about the RMT, people just need to complain about everytime, but they forget really fast that there is RMT in almost evry major games, take a look at CoX, they use it and no one complains about it. The difference is, NCSoft add them after that people start playing, Cryptic are up front and honest about it.
Get a life you freaking Gamer.....no no, you don't understand, I'm a Gamer, I have many lives!!
See, but that's where the problem comes in, you don't know if down the line if what they are selling will be required. I mean, yes, you might be able to get that raid required 'Shazam Power Fury Necklace' in game, but if they stack it so you have to spend 200 hours in game to get it or buy it for $15.99, what do you think will happen?
It's in their best interest monetarily to make it near impossible to get something in game then offer it up as an RMT item.
Personally, I prefer to take that bit of temptation away from the developers. Make a good game and you don't need the RMT. Make it engaging, fair, and with a good story and you are set.
If the OP is cool with the possibility of having to pay for something in the future, then I say have a go at it, but for me, I find it ludicrous and even a bit insulting that they would even offer a lifetime subscription with that sword hanging over the purchaser's heads.
Yeah, I don't understand why everyone is crying over the RMT thing. No one is forcing them to use it and everything can be attained just through playing the game. Why get upset over other people wasting their money on something they could get just by PLAYING...which i thought was the reason we are getting the game to begin with? So we can play.
I won't be using the RMT, but power to the folks who choose to. That whole subject does not deter me from the game or change my view on it at all. I'm just hoping they put out more content(instances, zones, powers, levels, etc) at a decent pace.
And we have a winner!

Please don't make assumptions. My actual point of view is that it is better to not pay to play a game with limited access to content.
The OP doesn't even know how long it will stay interesting. Spending 200 on a sub that may not have lasting appeal doesn't sound smart to me.

Guess what you don't HAVE to but the expansion and you don't have to buy RMT items. You want extra stuff? You can buy a collectors edition. There have been a number of companies that have addons to their product. "Want fries with that". MT is a way for developers to offer items that the standard game doesn't have and doesn't need. you want the PINK TUTU go ahead and get it. Do you want to avoid going to a store and buying the game you can buy it on-line, another "virtual" store.
Do you really thin that the game publisher are SOOOOOOOOOOO STUPID that they well kill their own game off. Because your arguements indicate they are. They must sit around and say "Gee what can we do to destroy this game we just spent MILLIONS on". "Lets sell every in game item in a virtual store so people will get bored in 2 days instead of 2 years"" Great, idea gee that way we can lose 100% of our money in 2 days and the company will make me CEO"

They only one making assumptions is you. "My actual point of view is that it is better to not pay to play a game with limited access to content. ". Where is you proof that there is limited content? Items are NOT content. A new expansion is content and I still think you are going to pay for that.
This company has hired Bill Roper.
Last game he was involved with : Hellgate London. Also had lifetime membership. Lot of people got that.
Lot of people got SCREWED out of their money. Game didn't even last a year.
AND it did not have the HUGE FAIL FACTOR of RMT.
I'll keep my 200 bucks and see if this lasts more than 6 months. I've heard a lot of good things about CO. I've heard a lot of bad things about CO. I am not confident about this game.
They offer me a guarantee in WRITING they will provide service to me for minimum of 14 months regardless of future earnings and remove RMT and I'll take the lifetime membership.
I've been debating getting the lifetime sub, it's a tough choice.
For sure, it's not gonna be the next best mmorpg. It may be very short lived.
I do want to play the game to end game and I'm going to be very busy for the next year. The lifetime sub might help me accomplish that by not having to feel rushed into playing to save money.
Dont do it. Bill Roper is working on Champions online...and remember his last game... *cough* Hellgate: London *Cough* had a lifetime sub option as well. Needless to say, it was a mess. Just do a normal sub, its much safer that way. Not to mention, there is no guarantee Champions will survive for any set period of time. It does have direct competition with DC Universe, and Aion is coming out soon. That game already has over 3 mill subs in asia, which is a pretty good indicator its not going down the toilet anytime soon. MMORPGS are somewhat like investments... both in time and money. If the game holds an uncertain future, its too much risk for a lifetime sub.
Cryptic didn't develop Hellgate London and Bill Roper wasn't solely responsible for it's failure. These are all moot points. Plus we still don't even know whats available through RMT...most likely just fluff (aka useless) items.
I tried to do it but the first and only time I did buy a lifetime sub it was from Bill Roper. With him involved I just could not do it.
Wait for the open beta and the NDA to lift before going for a lifetime subscription... Pretty sure the deal will still be up by this time.
Gonna have to disagree with you there champ. Roper played a big role in Hellgate londons outcome. Further, regardless of company, he is still part of the project. My points are not illogical. There have been some changes at Cryptic, different teams are involved. There is nothing to inspire any bit of confidence. Based on this info, the competition and certain key developers... its best to assume the product has the possibility of flopping.
I would never pay for a lifetime sub for this game unless it included all of the item shop items along with it.
Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.
You all think that RMT is a bad thing.
CoH has it but no one even looks at it. Booster packs and such
It was stated that the RMT you can get the stuff in game or its just extra costume pieces and such. Nothing about different content or easier lvling.
I say if you think this game is gonna last longer then 1 yr then go for it. Me im getting the 6mth deal as i dont want to spend 200+ on a game.
and with Bill being on the same team as Hellsgate. well that is stupid to think he was the only one that has the ablity to close a game. Remember he had a whole team on hellsgate. Now if they all to come over to CO at the beginning then i would worry, but only him yah i wouldnt care. He came late in the game and wasnt there from the start.

Like what specifically?
The whole Bill Roper thing will also not play a part in my decision. I do not think hellgate london failed because he was working with them, Hellgate failed because it did not have anything going for it to compete with the rest of the MMO population/ needs of players.
Comparing Champions Online to Hellgate London...just doesn't happen.

yah with Rabenwolf as a critic then we wouldnt have any games out there.
Raben ill give you 5 reasons why it isn't Bill's fault that Hellsgates failed
1. Bill worked for a business and the business says if they want to put money in a game or not.
2. Bill had a lot to do with the way the game ran, but the business has the marketing department that didnt do their jobs right. (i for one didnt even hear of this crappy game until it was gone)
3. you never heard of shareholders?
4. It was never 1 mans fault for a game to fail, it is the companies fault and the teams fault
5. A person that designed or worked on a project has no ability to close a game down, the company would just replace him if he cant do what they want done.
So your points are illogical.

It's so not logical to say you won't do something because of one man, in this case Bill. Take a look a NCSoft, they shut dowm more MMO in the past years than anyone else and still people are going crazy for Aion. They are not thinking, oh wait, don't buy the game because they might shut down the game.
Get a life you freaking Gamer.....no no, you don't understand, I'm a Gamer, I have many lives!!
The lifetime subscription is a gamble, but such things always are. Basically, it comes down to a few things:
Where it can screw you is if you hate the game and play less than 13 months in total, or the game simply folds within 13 months. I seriously doubt the game will fail that hard, so that is not a major concern.
Anyway, $200, for most people, is a fair chunk of cash to plunk down for an unproven video game. Some people say it is stupid to pay this much up front, and I understand the arguments, but ultimately it is a personal decision and for many it will work out - for others it will not.
I did not purchase a Lord of the Rings Online lifetime subscription, and for me that was wise, as I only played a couple months, but some people have saved hundreds as it has been out for 28 months now, and shows no signs of dying any time soon.
You could theoretically save $1000 if the game lasts 80 months, which is not unheard of. EverQuest has lasted over 120 months, and World of Warcraft has been going for nearly 60.

I like how you attempt to insult there champ. Please point me to where i said the fault lay on Ropers shoulders alone? You see, all you did here was spin and manipulate. Thats a no no. I never made such claims as you have put it.
Hellgate failed because the game design, game quality, and business model were absolute CRAP. I am sorry you are uninformed on the matter, but he did play a huge role in all of those failures.
Is one person reason enough not to play the game? Well I dont think so and quite frankly i dont recall ever making that claim. Again you are slandering for god knows why. Immaturity perhaps.
Merely I suggest that Champions online doesnt really give off the image of a successful product due to yes, certain employees, history (previously was marvel online until they canned it), and console market in which they are competing with DC Universe. It would be illogical to not hold the wait and see approach. Its called caution. I see some of the fanboys hate this for some reason.
And finally...seriously, drop the whole over used, horribly inaccurate and immature "get out of your moms basement heeheehee" line. I am in the business of making films and soon to be games, i would hate for anyone in that line of work to still be living in anyones basement much less their mothers. Nice try though bub.
