Hey all was wondering if anyone knew what currently are the most populated MUDS? The ones i am most familiar with are by simutronics.com such as Dragonrealms. Is this the most popular mud right now? Player population means alot to me.
thanks

Any ironrealm game, and from those probably acheae. Granted ironrealm games and "bad" item shop are pretty much the same thing.
You also get a few giggles from the mud community when they say "when Ironrealms can't pull a profit anymore you know muds are officially dead"
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
Yeah, the Ironrealms item shops are completely out of control. It gives "free to lose, pay to win" a whole new meaning; some players buy thousands of dollars (IRL dollars) worth of artifacts and such. It's hilarious how much more expensive most MUDs are than any given graphical MMORPG (though they're far cheaper than the $$ per hour they cost in the late 1980s and early 1990s).
@OP: DragonRealms (by SimuTronics) and GemStone IV are still quite popular, well populated (moreso than any of the Ironrealms games according to Mudstats.com), and actually have amazing communities of intelligent, helpful, hardcore players, among them many dedicated role-players. I don't think they have a significant cash shop. However, they have several different levels of subscription plans, and all but the basic one are more expensive than $15 per month.
Word of warning, though: To max all skills in DragonRealms, it's estimated that you'd have to play eight hours per day, every day for a year EDIT: for thirteen years. It's a sandbox game and not focused on getting to a fairly high power level (that takes at least a year of dedicated playtime), but take heed: If you feel grindy-ness keenly, you'll hate DR/GS IV. It puts Lineage II to shame in a big way where grind is concerned.
Discworld MUD is totally free, no pay for perks, has a decent population, and is highly regarded in the MUD community at large.
Finally, there's Avalon: The Legend Lives MUD. I started playing that many years ago, and it's bloody brilliant. Reasonable subscription fee, no cash shop, FANTASTIC community, players and gods (former players) completely control how the in-game society is run, and there's fantastic roleplaying to be had. The population is a tad low, and the combat system is incredibly challenging, but Avalon is truly epic.
Oh yeah, and there's Aardwolf MUD. It's got the #1 population of any (non-adult) MUD, is totally free to play, and is reportedly fun, though also not as high-quality as the other MUDs I listed, with a "leet" community and such.
Too lazy to provide links, use Google.
Currently Playing: EVE Online
Retired From: UO, FFXI, AO, SWG, Ryzom, GW, WoW, WAR
Man, this makes me want to boot up the ol Telnet
Torrential: DAOC (Pendragon)
Awned: World of Warcraft (Lothar)
Torren: Warhammer Online (Praag)
You should also check out Armageddon MUD and Dart MUD. Just so you know, they're both permadeath MUDs.
Discworld's population never seems to flag. Every time I go back to check it out, there's always more players. No idea if it's true or not, but it's rumoured that Pratchett himself funds it. It has theoretically unlimited advancement - though with severely diminishing returns beyond a certain point - and is peppered with Pratchett's style of humour. If you enjoy his books, you'll probably enjoy the game. It also has full equipment saving on logout.
The Discworld mudlib remains my personal favourite.
Unfortunately most other muds I've been back to in recent times seem just about dead.
Nice thanks for the replies
Wow i was wondering what you meant by adult muds. The top Mud on that mudstat site has to be the most fed up thing i have seen in a long time
