Different people have different ideas on what would constitute a survival MMO. Some people might go along with the "Dead" IPs. They may do the whole Resident Evil, L4D, and all the rest. Some might think along the lines of The Stand, I Am Legend - some might think Jeremiah and Jericho. Some may even think RIFTS or RIFTS: Chaos Earth or any of the other PnP RPGs that have touched upon some sort of post apocalyptic event. Some might think Fallout.
That is where I am kind of left wondering. I recently decided to reinstall Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel after seeing this and reading the blog post on classless systems. While I never played any of the actual Fallout series, I remember playing Wasteland on my C64 (one of the reasons I picked up FT:BOS).
In reinstalling it, I went out to search for the last patch. In doing so, I came across information where part of the deal with Bethesda picking up the IP from Interplay discussed a MMO they had been looking into. It stated though, that Interplay would get royalties/etc if it began development before a certain time even with it going to Bethesda. There was mention of an article in GameInformer talking about Interplay possibly losing the IP for it. My question comes in regard to what ZeniMax is working on. They are the MMO guys for Bethesda. While it is possible that they may be working on TESO, the market is glutted with fantasy games. ZeniMax is working on something, but it is hush-hush and all that.
Is it possible they are working on Fallout Online...?
i think this idea could be tweaked and work out to be huge and no u don't need servers of only 500 or so u could make it bigger by making whole continents being there own server using satellite images you could make the world just like it is today but totally ruined you could see your! house burning. and that makes lots of free land to rebuild if u used the real world as that size of place u wanted to play in.
What about having a roster of characters - some as normal, some as zombies?
That sounds great, but we would have to come up with classes of zombies that are not totally trounced by the superior firepower of the normals. Because the whole advantage zombies have over normals is the fact that they have numbers on their side.
It would require some creativity but I would love to come up with Zombie Classes.
There's a webcomic called Zombie Hunters that has different types of zombies. It's what's been in my head from the beginning of the article.
hideo kojima and shinji mikami(metal gear and resident evil creators) had this idea "The zombie idea I have is a bit different. Imagine a large town where half the inhabitants are zombies. Users would subscribe, get inside the town and get bitten. At that stage they become undead and can't control their character - all they can do is modify the camera angles... They'd see their character attacking humans and have to pay just to watch! The only way they could end it is by opening another account, hunting themselves down and killing themselves. Of course, the problem is that your second character can get bitten as well." now part of that, is an intresting idea. other then possibly needing a second account to deal with it, but if you had several character slots per server, then it would be pretty cool, if you lost one due to turning, and had to hunt yourself down, in order to get that slot back. it would also be cool, to log in, and see what your zombie was doing. but that would bring up an intresting idea, persistence. could we have an mmo in which all our characters, are always in the world. making logging out one of the most important things to consider. now i would like to see two things taken from SWG and tabula rasa for a survival mmo. SWG i would want city building. you may have to give the player options to convert buildings into villages and safe havens, and also give players the option to build walls and structures, in the wild, and create there own little towns. you could place walls, defense structures for sniping, pouring boiled oil, launch flaming arrows, and under the right circumstances, prehaps you've found a military depot, and you have access to flamethrowers or m60 mounted rifles, things like that. now, the second part to that, i'd like seen, is from tabula rasa, but a little more extreme. all safe havens, from player build areas, to the static npc havens, can be over run. what would happen, is the more people holed up in the area, the more zombies would spawn in said area. in fact, those little quests to kill x amount of zombies, would increase in amount, the fewer done. every area would have a zombie meter, with the red zone, being decided on a few things, namely, the size of said outpost, and the other major factor, would be the defenses of the outposts. if not enough kill quests are being done, the meter rises, when it enters the red zone, a five minute counter would appear, if not enough players get out there to deal with the zombie horde, they over run the outpost, and you have to fight inside your town to keep it from being overrun. if you fail, the zombies keep it, and other players have the chance to move into your place, while your regrouping. i also think it should be full pvp with looting, and it has to be a skill system like swg.... not darkfall. i have more ideas... i've been thinking about this kind of mmo for awhile....
I love it! I was talking with a few friends about something similar, but you've got it a bit more detailed than I did. I had a bunch of random little ideas, you just kinda put them together.
I have been thinking about this for some time, and this is the way I would do a Zombie MMO. Twitch combat with no combat skills, skills would only apply to making items (not "crafting") and sneaking seeing and maybe driving. No NPCs. No Currency, barter only. No global or zone chat only local, or with in a group. players would form gangs. Gangs would fight in full PVP with full loot for the resources provided by certain buildings in The City. The world would be large enough to encompass 2 or 3 huge cities with surrounding urban areas. Vehicles would be available and modifiable. No teleporting you would have to run or drive long distances. Resources such as metals, fuel and food would be located in specific building of each s=city and would be needed to make items. There would be better gear but no uber loot or "magical" items or attacks. Sneaking would be better than running and gunning. Zombies would be everywhere, great gobs of the stinky fucks and they would just keep coming. Nowhere would be safe and while players may baracade a building they will get in if if the baracaed is not maintained. There would be fast zombies, slow zombies smart zombies, dumb zombies and when they killed a player they would become a zombie for a time and then the player would have the choice to respawn or remain. Player zombies would develope zombie abilities like speed and the ability to control other NPC zombies. The game would be hard, bleak and bloody and unfortunately I think very few people would play it. But those that would will play it alot.
Combine this with about four other posts, and we've already got the groundwork for an amazing game laid.

Superior firepower would be in limited supply. Guns need ammo.
One of my favourite aspects of survival horror is improvising of weapons. Such weapons would be relatively easy to find and make, but fragile and of varying effectiveness. 'Pointed sticks' FTW!
and chainsaws need fuel.
That made me think of Mad Max and the retarded kid in the Thunderdome....blaster, I think his name was.
I think this is a great Idea...you could even have PVP if you wanted. Player could be the monsters and there could be the survivors. I like the sound of it. But i would take a brilliant team of devs.
Left 4 Dead Online anyone ? How about Dead Space Online ? Those are the two best survival horror games I have ever played. I think if it done right a survival mmo would be pretty interesting to many people, not to mention very different which the mmo genre really needs.
L4D is not survival horror.
Dead Space isn't either, but it's close.
I would liek the idea of a Deadspace feel game or silent hill. instances could be completly dark and you would have a time limit to make it thru til the horde of baddies come and make it difficult to pass through. I think Zombies is a dead horse. Maybe some mutated animals or demon kids!
I think this is one of those genres that we can expect to appear when dynamic servers appear that can handle changing the game world based on player decisions...
id say this would be possible around 2015, 2020 or further out

Dead people.
Very dark areas would be a big plus. Use sound to find your way around safely. Not many batteries left. A hand-powered flashlight would be a valuable find.
Imagine if you found a working DVD player with every season of Mythbusters and Survivorman - Jackpot!

I think I like the no classes idea, but pets are a damned fine addition to any mmorpg.
I would play a game like that in a heartbeat. now if only there was an MMO company with the cherries to try it
I think I've decided to make it, getting a notebook to flesh out the ideas I like already stated here, which is most of the system. Then to either teach myself to program or hope there's a few codemonkeys I know that are willing to help. It'll be a few years in the making and pretty crappy at first, but I need a project to work on.
Well, I suppose you could have a tiny retriever dog for tight spaces....and stew.
Terriers were bred for ratting. Don't know about their flavour.
Economically speaking, you don't want to eat something that would compete for your food. Something that lives off garbage - like rats - would be better.

Thanks, Doubter. I'm a wee bit worried, since I'm an idea man, a dabbler in the writer/editor/dreaming what if arts and not a programmer or degreed in design, but I'm 28 after this month, and almost all the things I wanted to see games do back in high school have been done, as of 3 or 4 years ago....I noticed it, then started thinking, NOW what do I want to see....except now I'm not a kid with no money and no way to make any of it work...I'm an adult with more experience in games and juggling the budgets. When there's anything at all to test, I'll probably jump on the forums here and let everyone know.
Okay, so it is not a Horror MMO, but Wurm Online is about survival.
You are effectively thrown into a world where a large amount of the fauna see you as edible. You have to fish, cut wood, make fires, make food, grow crops, clear trees, flatten and shape the land, create mines (and hope you find ore), and generally try and survive.
And when you do get it all worked out, some damned bear comes and has you for lunch!
And that is just on the non-pvp server!
When you add kingdom -v- kingdom, the survival takes on another meaning.
As I said, it is not a horror MMO, but with first person only perspective and a full day-night cycle, and way too many trees, plenty of players have jumped out of their skin when a croc has jumped out of nowhere. And when in panic you run for it (cos your fight skill is not up to fighting crocodiles yet) you just watch your stamina bar get lower and lower, and you dare not look behind you to see if you have outrun the croc because that will mean you will stop, and the croc catch up.
And if you do get away, who is to say that is the only thing waiting in the dark, massive forests ..... ?

That's actually one of about 6 or 9 games I'm looking at for inspiration. The software to randomly create the entire continent, with fully interactive environment is awesome. I just can't stand the client for the game. It always crashes, then when I think I have it fixed, two days later it'll crash for a few more weeks. Repeat until I'm tired of it for months on end. Damned fine system, though.

Ask on the Wurm Forums, someone may be able to help you. http://www.wurmonline.com/forum/
Quite often it is because the graphics levels need to be changed. Click on settings.
On the main "game" tab, try changing the game renderer. You souls also try changing settings on the Graphics" tab.
