A short review/story of my experience in the beta...

NetzokoNetzoko Member Posts: 1,271

I figured I'd test out the hype even though I saw nothing really new within this game. Anyhow, I blew 60 bucks and waited for the agonizingly slow download at about 65 kb/s.

So I make my character, the options are nice even though the anime theme usually only appeals to 14 year olds. The second I get in game some guy with wolverine hair and a childish name challenges me to a duel right in the load in area. Obviously I want to figure out the UI and learn the game, so I decline. I am then spammed with tells calling me a pussy, and this guy follows me around for about 15 minutes until I figured out how to change channels. During this I'm both annoyed but mildly amused as every kiddy gamer stereotype falls into place. I honestly expected an anime themed WoW template to draw in the kiddies.

So I start doing some quests... holy cow. Every single one is vaguely written and utterly confusing. I get a quest that basically says, "Go see Bob." That's it... the quest description is one sentence. There's no arrow to point where he is, no red map area like WAR, no minimap icons... nothing. You are given a one line description and expected to find it. Alright, I'll ask in chat. After all, MMOs are for socializing in a sense. I felt like I was talking to a class of 1st graders. The few players that took the few seconds away from grinding to acknowledge another human existence within the game were barely literate. These kids can exchange an array of chuck norris jokes but when it comes to gameplay chat everyone just goes about their business grinding it up.

As you can tell, the community aspect is nauseating. But if the game offered a new, fun game I'd usually oblige, but it doesn't. The combat is totally standard. I played the F2P Runes of Magic recently and it felt like the same exact thing. As a mage it just came down to spamming various magic bolts over and over. Aion has F2P written all over it. Simple combat, C student graphics, poorly designed shallow quests. There's really not much that F2P games lack. It's missing that umph. And yes, I'm sure the fanboys will come tell me how the "real game" is when you hit the Abyss and PvEvP  blah blah and how Korea has millions of subs blah blah. Well you know what? The Jonas Brothers sell millions of albums, and everybody who knows MMOs knows that having a text-book game with PvP still gets boring... fast. The game has NO depth just like its World of Warcraft idol. You grind to endgame in a boring, dull experience. You PvP for land, castles, whatever. Its just another numbers game with Tank/Healer/DPS classes.

Flame on. I thought that even without anything new offered that maybe the game might be fun and fresh. It's not. It's a dry, standard korean grinder with decent PvP disguised as a AAA MMORPG.

I tried the beta and found it too linear, boring, way less skill involved than DF (to the annoyance of the naysayers it's probably the most player skilled game out there now) and just couldnt do what I wanted to do.

DF/MO is my kind of game that gives me the freedom that I need, I will never pay a cent for anything non-sandbox again.

However the quest system, you click on "BOB' in the quest log and it gives you location on the map.

Very simple really, just still boring.

You can open your journal and select the quest and then select whatever it is you want to find and it puts it on the map with an X just like every other game.  I suppose they set it up this way so those that prefer to explore can find things on your own but you must not have played that long if you couldn't figure that out.

The community is really weak right now due to the chat channels not being in place.  You're definitely right about that but my understanding is its being worked on so hopefully by open beta or at the very least when it goes live those are in place.

As for the combat, seems the same to me as in any other mmo.  Nothing special but no different than what you find in general.  There are chain skills but a lot of newer mmos are doing this and the whole chain skill thing to me is just a novelty although some seem to enjoy it.

As for quests, the main story line seems a bit interesting.  I don't think its as good as LotR but at least there's a story there and there are some other interesting story arcs although it does basically for most boil down to gather x of this or kill x amount of mobs - but that's the way it is in every mmo I've played.

    1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

    2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

    3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

Thats funny, because my own experience with the EU CBT (pertaining the community) has been overwhelmingly positive.

Well op, thanks for your IMPRESSIONS of the game, unfortunately, you posted it here amongst all the rabid fanboism that is MMORPG.COM. Welcome to the land of black or white where you must either tear a game to shreds or raise it up to godhood. Grey does not exist.

    Cheers!

MMO Vet since AOL Neverwinter Nights circa 1992. My MMO beat up your MMO. =S

One person said he was trolling and that equates to this?  Did you even read people's response or just assume everyone flamed him?
