COH/COV vs CO

This is just my initial thought and is subject to change slightly once I have had time to actually play the game for more then 30 minutes. The 15 hour nightmare to patch this game almost made me uninstall and never give it another thought.

I have got to say that from what I saw while in the game before the servers went down that City of Heroes/Villians trumps this game by leaps and bounds.  Not only does CoH/CoV have ten times better graphics but the gameplay is awesome compared to CO. You would have thought that developers would have taken what CoH/CoV did and make it alot better but what they did was go in the opposite direction.

Funny, i been playing for at least 6 hours and i have to say, my opinion is the complete opposite.   I did however dislike the post processing effects, they hurt my eyes, after i turned them off maxed rest of the settings.  Graphics are as good or better, i like the whole Comicbook feel and the Endless customization you can do with your costume, powers and attributes.  The Voice acting and missions make you feel like you really are making a difference.

This is my signature .There are many like it, but this one is MINE. My signature is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. My Signature without me is useless. Without my signature, I am useless. I must sign my signature true. I must sign it better than the noobs who are trying to kill me. I must kill them before they kill me.

ya some of the post processing effects, Especially Depth of Field are doing more harm than good to the graphics.  On some systems Depth of Field seems to be working, but on many systems Depth of Field is distoring everything no matter what the distance is.

how its suppose to work, is it blurs things out in the distance.  Whats going on is its blurring..everything for a lot of people.   Turn it off and see if it improves.

If not, then it may be the outlining effects.  I personally like the outlining effects.  It makes the game look like an animated comic book and its genuinely unique. But a lot of people may not like it and like the more classic 3d rendered look with straight edges etc.

anyway, there was a thread during closed beta to turn these options off by default because at least one of the post processing options was buggy.  They kept them on for high end systems or high quality settings and now you'll have a lot of people who will log in, see the screen blurred because of the borked Depth of Field and assume the game has crap graphics.

Oddly, I didn't have any problems with the download or patch, and the graphics look pretty decent, 4 colour comic style retro to me.

I actually think the game is a definate step up from CoH at the moment, in terms of look and fun.

I found CO graphic to be very much leaning towards consoles and not PC.

The game has very bad rendering engine , uses very small textures - all pointing out towards the fact that it was done that way so the console port would be easily made.

Starting areas look acceptable, but when the game starts for real in Millennium city. Its just horrible.

City Of Villans actually looks better in many areas

It really isn't 'fair' to compare a game that still is Beta, (snicker), and will be for at least a year to a game that has been out and supported for 5 years.

However, and it's a big however, as a long time CO beta tester, I can tell you that CO has nothing on CoX, even with those limitations.

Every patch breaks new things, the combat system is... well, the worst I've EVER seen, and powers are so out of balance that gameplay is just tedious.

All you do is spam your End builder attack, then trigger your big attack.  Rinse and repeat.  Most, and I mean MOST of the powers of any set will never be used because they are useless.

The best advice when approaching CO is not to expect much, yes some things are better than CO, some things pretty much the same and some things are worse..... essentially the most dissapointing thing is the absence of anything that is fresh or new. Very quickly it seems old and just more of the same.

The graphics are an acquired taste but I think generally are very good and are even better when seen animated...more a cartoon than a comic mind...... however I prefer CoH's more realistic graphics in honesty but think CO's slick models and lighting effects are more deserving of a win.

The character creators in both games are awesome, lots of detail and options to suit almost anyone I would rate this a definite win for CO as it has more tweaks and physical changes to offer but with the proviso you still might be able to get the look you want better in CoH than CO.

Power selection is much wider in CO and the ability to make them look diferent and cool is tremendous....however ultimately there is only ONE thing you can do with your powers and thats bash the enemy, by and large 3 active powers in CO are all thats needed to do pretty much everything.....COH actually needs you to use all your powers though its a contrived way they go about it.....your AT makes leveling a different experience in COH but no matter your power selection in CO the levelling journey/story is the same, CoH wins becasue power choices actually make a difference to play.

Gameworld: This will be down to personal preference, CO is primarily open world, CoH is primarily instanced both to the same degrees in opposite direction, both are guilty of really using one to the extent of total boredom...... personally I don't like seeing the objective I just completed back in open view a minute after I finished..... it wouldn't be so bad but enemy and objective layout in CO is really lazy. theres perhaps two ways to complete an instance, full on or by stealthing the key points..... however there seems only one way to complete anything in CO and its really tedious the way gangs overlap. I actually hate CO's gameworld with a passion.

Environments. Millenium City in CO blows any area out of the water in CoH it is really impressive.....buuuut the wilderness zones in CO (which the game sadly forces you to go to) are bland, dull and just come accross as paint jobs of the same few polygons, your heart literally sinks the longer you spend there and you seem to have to spend wayyy longer than you'd ever choose to, the sprawling and cramped enemy layout in CO destroys the feeling of space and the linear route every quest mechanic demands just emphasies the grind. CoH's has much greater conviction toward the comicbook theme, its game is elevated by the theme so it sneaks the win.

Enemies: There is almost no personality in any aspect of CO, the game is a commercial package, sterile and functional,  your carefully modelled avatar or its equally carefully crafted Nemesis (who once you are done painting is released to turn into generic mastermind XXX) all become the same generic superthug fedex'ing 'do X of Y' missions for people who you have no interest or choice. Some of the enemies look nice some genuinely awful for all the wrong reasons and there is much less variety in minions. CoH is definitely a more interesting cast of characters.

Combat system: Meh I hear people enthuse about CO here but spamming a key to build endurance (or leaving it on autofire) has simply replaced cooldown timers...they adjusted endurance before open beta so its not as bad as it was but either balance will have gone to pot (not that there is much) or it will son be nerfed back...this is not a breakthough system by any means - a dead heat for the games.

PvP: the PvP in CO is nicely done but as its hero vs hero, its hardly integrated or relevent, ita just there becasue this is an mmo and it has to be, At least CoH exploits the real potential of the eme to generate frission and the balance is actually better in the older game. Of course CO might see the expansion Nemesis online later, but given the open power selection I see no hope for decent balance and no reason why Villian play could not have been employed for pvp at least from day one....an arbitrary feature that will suit a few select builds much much less than it could have become. CoH gets the win.

Depth: Errr none and none..... Player made content and Moral choices coming to CoH which may tip it that way but surely surely CO will make some effort to give us more to do than just hit anything in sight (unforgivable that it hasnt done so for release imo)

Community: I cant see any reason either game will have one over on the other here....over time they will have the usual collection of fanbois and haters so a dead heat.

Overall COH I'd give a 7.5/10 and CO 6/10 essentially for the lack of originality in the latter and fair or not a five year old game engine deserves a bit more consideration than one that really should have evolved or progressed.
