What is going to stop me from playing is the item shop added on to a subscription game. If I am paying 15/month I best be getting ALL items in the game including ornamental.
To me a microtransaction is any charge a company makes beyond the retail box, sub and expansions. Most MMOs have added additional ways to fund their game. If they don't have one now, they will have one eventually. It's something that's happening.
If you don't like it, then your MMO playing days might be over except for F2P ones.
See, now the truth comes out why you posted the way you did. I think if you said the first time that you didn't like CO due to microtransactions, that's a legitimate reason. I don't particuarly like it myself but it is the trend of pretty much all MMOs these days. But that's a whole different topic. But the way you worded your previous post, it sounded like you were just one of those people who whine and complain no matter what. I also wanted to add, if you truly didn't care, you wouldn't even post. "Warn others of the lifetime sub?" Why? It's their money. Your dislike of Cryptic (for whatever reason) isn't allowing you to be objective. As for many players having a hand fed mentality...well, generally speaking those types of players don't last long in a MMO they only have a casual interest in. Like I said, if it's that easy to deter some people from a game then they never were the target audience. They never really wanted to play the game. And your comments also prove this. I think you and your friends just are not MMO-type players. Nothing wrong with that. There are other games than MMOs. But you seem to prove my statement in saying you and your friends are probably not the target audience. Now if you piss off the ones who really love the superhero genre...then Cryptic has a problem. But I think they did a good job. Is it perfect and completely revolutionary? Nope. It's evolutionary. And that's what I expected and I wager that's what most people expected as well.
Yeah my bad if it seemed like I was trying to hide the fact that Cryptic's business practices, design for games, passion for gaming in general, and greed disgusts me. I have always been pretty open about it on these forums. Also I was not one of the ones locked out of the OB. It was just 3 guys I play Dawn of War 2, Culdcept Saga, PoxNora, CnC, etc. with who got all excited about the new OB, DL'ed it on fileplanet against my suggestion that it was a shallow game backed by souless sellout developers, and then couldn't even get in.
I am a MMO player... There are hardly any i've missed, but I won't lay a finger on this after beta, and because I know how Cryptic is i'll probably bypass Star Trek, but hope to get in the beta. My friends played old good MMO's like DaOC and Ultima at launch but haven't enjoyed one really since DaOC. I got wrapped up in FFXI though.
This is a casual MMO. It is shallow, and not very long. It won't retain subs well, and maybe that is why they are shoving the lifetime and 6 month subs down people's throats. I guarantee this. My friends are the casual type gamers that could have played this. Hardcore MMO vets will not play this for long. This game needs casual players.
I don't know. In general though I was just commenting that this was bad for the game. It would be bad for any game going into an open beta that didn't attract a shitload of diehard fans. This game does not have a shitload of diehard fans. My comment would have been the same for any non huge mainstream MMO coming down the pipeline.
Regardless of how general my comment could have been I am glad that this happened to Cryptic. I hope that people see this game for what it is and they get jaded for the Star Trek release. I hope the falling out is so bad that Cryptic gets restructured and the toolbags that are calling the shots get sent to do PR for Disney Land. This is the extent of the negativity I will put into this game and now i'm going to walk away and pretend it doesn't exist. I am not a negative person.
Imagine after years of hard work and millions of dollars spent developing this game a patcher is going to be the cause of it's downfall??????
I think most people will judge the game from their impresssions once they actually get to play it. If for some reason there is someone who plays the game and likes it but will not pick it up because they could not beta test for a day or two, well the community will probably be better without them around anyway.

I hope you don't feel like I'm attacking you. I certainly am not. It's just you are replying so I'm just continuing the debate. I applaud your honesty even though we sit on different sides of the fence.
As for its casual nature... CoH was just as shallow if not more shallow than CO but it's still going strong. I don't think WoW is all that hardcore and we know how that game is doing. I think it's not necessarily shallowness that kills MMOs. It just has to be fun. I mean, how often do people play the same maps on certain FPS? Yeah sure, you play against other players but really...it's the same ole same ole in most circumstances. But it's fun and that's all that matters.
I think maybe your friends are looking for the same feeling when they played DAoC and UO. Sadly, I don't think that will happen. How often do we read posts on this forum about people wishing there was an updated version of EQ? The truth is, hindsight and nostalgia makes those old games look better than they really were. I personally think the casual nature of most MMOs these days have benefited MMOs. It made the market better and if you really look at the basics, there isn't much difference in the gameplay.
I think maybe you are and old school MMOer that sees the genre change to something you don't enjoy. I don't know what to tell you. Adapt and change or play a different type of game is about the only thing that can be said. Who knows? Maybe a small indie developer will make a old school MMO that you will enjoy?
Out of curiosity, why do you hate Cryptic so much? What have they done that upsets you so?
If this was release, I'd agree with you, but it isn't.
/Qfe. This is a beta test. Part of that process includes identifying and fixing game-breaking bugs before release. We are indeed in the before release phase of development. I wonder if people are able recognize the importance of that.
I'm 100% opposed to RMT that affects gameplay in a subscription based game (even if the same items are available via some gawd-awful ingame grind), so I'm not enthused about this game's business model; but I certainly wouldn't hold the problem with the patcher in beta against them.
I hope they get it worked out and give up the ridiculous notion of charging people extra cash for ingame performance enhancements. Cosmetic items, account management? Fine. In-game perfomance boosts? Never. That's a line I just won't go beyond--too much opportunity for the producer to be manipulative about it.
MMO's come and go so fast these days that if the developer screws up their first impression they can never recover. In my opinion Cryptic has shot themselves in the foot and this game will end up like Vanguard, AoC, Warhammer, DDO and every other MMO since WoW.
Too bad for Cryptic that the MMO consumer doesn't put up with shit from developers anymore. If the game is a failure at the start people will never give it a second chance. CO will end up a niche game with a small playerbase and Cryptic will probably never release the game on consoles.
Imagine after years of hard work and millions of dollars spent developing this game a patcher is going to be the cause of it's downfall??????
Guildwars did pretty well and it released after Wow.
Sure, they should have fixed the patche for the open beta but I don't see it as the thing this game will fall on. There are other things that can kill the game like the long term playability but that is also something we have to wait and see for.
Wow did not become a huge game because of it's patcher.
Honestly I believe CO has nothing to recover from. I played in the closed beta and was more than surprised to see how many people actually wanted to play this and get their hands on a beta key then. Now their in open beta and I still see tons of people playing this....I agree this game may not be what every mmo gamer would want to play, but this game has a lot of underlying potentional and their quick action style gameplay can be fun for just about anyone. I do believe that CO will make it far but, of course everyone isn't going to like it.
I believe the OP is upset because they can't get the game to patch. It's true, it has been a hassle for many people to patch the game, but that's because there's thousands of people all trying to patch at the same time, during OPEN BETA.
Dig around, find some external links to download the patch, at least until the number of clients patching at the same time decreases, or until Cryptic hashes out the issues with the patch server (probably going to need to add additional servers for patches).
Is this issue going to remain after release? Possibly. But with MMORPGs, you never spend money on a finished product, because updates and patches are always released so the product never really gets finished.
Aside from the patching issues, the game is top-notch! Graphics are great on high settings (I love cell-shading), the combat is somewhat new and refreshing, and customization is astounding.
So, just stick it out and get the patch downloaded, once you get into the game you'll realize that it was worth the effort.

I think your overreacting just a little. It's open beta, give them time to iron out some kinks.

I think OP is overreacting a lot, with a teenager-like confidence in their own ignorance.

If you can handle the Looney Tune shit graphics you can surely handle some open beta issues with patching.
