I'll be the first to admit that I have not been following this game. But I like to try out new games.. I have been playing mmo's since everquest. And like alot of gamers I keep my eyes open for the next big thing.

Initially the patcher really turned me off. It didnt even work the first 2 days and help on the forums was ignorant and false. I was honestly really upset. Even moderator posts were like "yeah it sucks... have a nice day!". So i almost didnt even try to patch it last night... I just kept trying and on about the 5th try it patched! took about 20 minutes and I was logging in.

The character creation is AMAZING!! I spent about an hour and a half in it. I will say that it is the best character creator I have ever used... It had to be to beat CoX. My girlfriend was laughing at all the characters that I made.. and I was like "this is cool as hell!!". Fun for the whole family lol.

So I got my toon finely crafted and logged in. uhg cell shading... I hate cell shading, wish it had never been thought of. My personal opinion of course.. But hey its a super hero game right.. and super heros used to be in 2d comic books.. the really old/cheap ones looked like this.. ok ok I'll deal with it. But why are some things cell shaded and others not?

The dialog pop-up is a little small at 1920x1200 but maybe there is a option to change that.

Ok now to the main thing: Combat. If CO can nail this then we prolly have a winner... nope. weakest part of the game. My opponent and I feel totally unconnected. I hit the button and wait a second. hit it again and wait. now I start shooting but my intentions are already out of sync with what I am seeing in the game. The enemies health bar depletes on its own not congruous with the "splashes" of my rounds hitting the mob which in turn don't really match my characer firing either... so all in all I feel like I am trying to play pool with a rope.

I logged out after the first combat mission. Will the combat system get better?

All MMOs constantly change/evolve.  This is just the beta.  What youre describing seems more like stuff that just needs to be tightened up.  The animations out of sync.  As long as you like the core mechanic of energy builder + attacks then you should be OK as the rest of the stuff will almost def get tightened in the first few months.

You can turn cell shading off.

The combat is something that needs to be improved. It isn't responsive enough, which gives you the problem you had. What you were experiencing with your rope analogy was the lag of the server trying to keep up with the buttons you pushed on your client.  The server couldn't keep up so your animations were out of synch. I have had small moments where the server kept up and it looked good. Especially with dual blades. I hope they get it working out for their sake.

This review matches my thoughts on the game.  This week's download/patch was a disaster.  Character creation is fun and detailed.  Combat is a bit boring.

The flying around makes combat a lot better. I went some where last night in Canada, went over this fort, they shot SAMs at me. I was like OH FU^&……………the jetted out of there with little of my health left. I HATE to say this, but as of right now, we are competing with each other for kills. I don’t like that. But the combat, is awesome, IMO.

Try all of the combat archetypes if you don't like the one you are using right now. I love the Swords but hate the ranged. I think the ranged is boring, but someone else probably thinks the opposite.

Forums posts not helpful?  I searched the forums for about 2 minutes before I read about moving the .hogg files and running in Admin mode.  After I did those things, I found the download to be reasonably fast.  On day two of the beta I downloaded the new FilePlanet installer in about 40 minutes, installed it and was online in under an hour from start to finish.  That's pretty damn good for day two of an open beta.

Character creation is amazing.  So many details.  I'm hopeful that even more customization will be added along the way.  I hope there are new features unlocked through gameplay.

I've always imagined an MMO with balance through diversity.  Champions Online certainly seems to be attempting this path.  Lots of similar powers with minor differences.  I hope the endgame PVP balance is there.

    Stop crying in my beer.

This is similar to the reason I stopped trying the OB.  Even movement lags behind your key presses.  That's something I find unacceptable in today's MMOs.  WoW may get a lot of hate, but their game runs smooth as butter, and that has spoiled me.  WAR's movement/combat wasn't that great, but I definitely felt more connected with the avatar than in this game.

I'm definitely not hating on the game, because I haven't played enough to make that decision.  It's just that something as simple as movement should work perfectly.  It's a big turn off for me, and nothing else in the game can make me forget about it.  It seems most fans are a lot more forgiving, and willing to deal with it, and that's fine (I put up with WAR's crap for a long time).

I just feel this will affect the amount of subs the game will have.  Most people who are not fans, and have not been following the game, will probably be turned off by it.  In a time where every MMO that comes out is, pretty much ass, devs need to step it up.  The basics really need to be as close to flawless as possible.

There is no endgame PvP in CO..at least for the moment... The game is 95 % PvE.

Wait, you gave up after killing the three pods about 15 seconds into the tutorial because you didn't like the combat? What a joke!

You do realize, most of what you will be doing involves combat, right?  If a person doesn't like the combat, why would they play?

because the you only start off with 2 skills and no travel power till about lvl 5 or when u get out of the tutorial.

also some skills are pretty boring and some arnt. the key is to find your favorite kind of build.

i have made couple chars some i hated and some that were really fun. the funest part about the ame are the quest.

No it was the first actual combat (drones?)... the pods were more like target practice but the problem was definitely there also.

its a tutorial its suppost to be easy as you level things can get harder.

I thought he was talking about feeling disconnected (delay between attacks) with his avatar during combat.  Not the spells, attacks, mob AI, etc.

    Thank you for this!

I felt the opposite. I tried the melee guy and was like "Oh no, I don't like this as much..." I like being able to build up my power from afar and zap, then go tunnel in the ground and pop back up.

I think that is what made WoW so interesting to me. A Cleric played different than a Rogue in how you had to manage mana that you used in one, while the other built up combo points. Up to that point, every class pulled from some generic resource like rage or mana and played much the same.

then he is a lagger because i had no such problems with any of my skills

  • Az2002roAz2002ro Member UncommonPosts: 158

Also, before giving up on combat, look into the Might (STR) abilities.   There is an entire side game to combat of picking objects up and using them to pummel someone, or hurling them at groups of mobs and watching all of them go flying and take damage.   You can even throw pavement at a car, make the car blow up and nearby enemies go flying and take damage.

To be more specific, this isnt a function only of the MIGHT framework, but anyone who's strength is high enough to pick up certain objects.   everyone can pick up a trash can, but can you pick up a car?  Tank?  even a Jet???   All are possible, but your STR has to be high enough

I got the beta up and running on my laptop earlier this morning since I'm out of town, but my machine is far from top-notch since I do 99% of my work from home. I noticed combat lag, but I was assuming it was due to my laptop struggling to keep up. I'm anxious to get back home where I can check out all the eye-candy on a top-end rig. We'll see.... I'm hoping the combat is more responsive.

He is not a lagger, because I have the same exact problem.  I haven't noticed this in the other MMOs I've played on this PC.

Correct me if i'm wrong but from what I have read end game pvp ranged always wins becase they just fly out of melee range and nuke. Also i have created just about every starting frame they have but I have noticed the DMG diffrenece beween beginning melee and begining range is huge. If a ranged character get into melee range  he's is dead in seconds. Melee is gimped because you have to physically move and no auto attack is involved, where as ranged you can stand 30 feet away and spam out the hurt. All melee build will need a good ranged hold so that they can get close enough to lay a smack down.

Following your advice...  Im correcting you.  your wrong.   Ranged has certain advantages, but melee has abilities to negate those advantages and then capitalize on the punishment.  I skilled melee player can own a ranged attacker.

And for variety in combat, there is always "Secret Option C" : Mix and match powers.

I am going to experiment with Dual Blades for power regen/AOE, and use a ranged power for damage. That way someone floating above me might ignore me when he sees me swinging my blades at someone....and then I turn around and hit him in the "jimmy" with my Purple Pig-Fu-Ker Ray!
