I've been playing MMOs for a while. Hell, I used to play MUDs/MUXes/MUSHes. So I have seen a lot in the field of what's out there. I've been in beta for only a few MMOs, mostly free ones like Neosteam and Crimecraft. I'd been only slightly interested in Champions Online because I had my sights set on Aion's upcoming release. I have the collector's edition on preorder. But I like MMOs and variety, so I decided to give it a try. Here's my take.
The initial patching fiasco was a little bit rough, I have to admit. I didn't get my game working until around 1pm the day after the open beta was supposed to begin. I think Cryptic's choice of using Fileplanet to distribute their program was a bit of a faux pas, but that's neither here nor there. The larger issue was the fact that they waited until the day of open beta to allow people a chance to patch. They should have done what Blizzard does with World of Warcraft and let us patch over the time we were waiting until the doors opened.
Like everyone has said, the creation tool for characters is pretty extensive. There are quite a bit of options to make your character look the way you'd like, from choosing various body types to picking the color of each individual piece of attire. One of my toons has a zombie/western gunslinger motif with red eyes that have smiley faces in them. That's amusing. The powersets have a lot of variety as well, but I find myself picking similar abilities since I am not entirely knowledgeable about the game's systems and how one power buffs/works in tandem with another. If you find that you do not like your powerset, there's the Power Factory that you get the chance to go to around level 5. You can respec individual powers for a reasonable cost and until you actually leave the Power Factory, the powers you purchase in there can be tested and tossed out for another. The Power Factory is kind of like the X-Men's Danger Room in that there are places you can test your abilities, like seeing how large of an object you can pick up and hurl, how much damage a laser does to you with invulnerability equipped. There's also a tailor in many of the zones after the tutorial that allows you to change your costume. I found that with the single blade power, it even allowed me to pick what weapon (mace, long sword, rapier, energy sword, etc...) my character used, as well as the color scheme for it. I found that refreshing.
The game itself seems rather enjoyable. The quests are entertaining, allowing you to help out various members of the Champions Online elite in battle against various super villains. I'm only around level 10, but I enjoy how fast my attacks strike my opponents. The whole lack of autoattack people have been talking about doesn't seem true to me. When I hit my power builder, it keeps hitting unless I press it again. I do like the ability to charge some of my powers to unleash stronger blasts of them.
I'm no professional reviewer, so this might just sound like a bunch of garbage. I'm sure I'll get flamed for liking the game, blah blah. Opinions are like anuses, everyone has one. But all in all, I like the game and am considering a lifetime membership so long as there's going to be enough content to make such an expenditure worth it. I haven't seen the endgame and do not know how often content will be updated, which is the only thing holding me back.

Yeah I'm unable to score it as well but that's ok for first few months you just trying to learn the game. And since this one has indepth character creation the learning curve might be high (ala EVE). And that's ok too. all one can say at this time if they are enjoying the experience or hate it.
Once I got into the game I was having fun and it brought back nice memories of City of Heroes back when I was a lil nub
THANK YOU.
You stated your opinion and gave reasons as to why your opinion is what it is. It was a great review of the basic game for someone who doesnt do review. I completly agree that the locking the installer/patcher was a really stupid mistake on Cryptics part. The character creation is pretty extensive but I think is a little bit of a mess. They need to do 2 things, first of which is allow you to filter some of the options according to theme that way you can look at all the stuff to create the character you want they way you want without having to sift through everthing else. Ex: I was gonna create a undead samurai but looking for all the samurai stuff was like banging my head against the wall. The 2nd thing they need to do is add more options in certain areas of the outfit creator, some of the options are seriously lacking compare to the others, its as if they purposely left out a bunch of the options so they could charge us the MT if we wanted them. I know somestuff you're supposed to be able to pick up in the game as rewards but we only have like 6 hairstyle??? WTF is up with that??? I do like to option to be able to edit left and right sides. Although i think they concentrate a little to much on MEN IN TIGHTS. Its ok , we the community understand if that perticular dev is still in the closet ROFL.
2 thumbs up. Thanks for the info, I agree that this is liek COX 2
