I think the Nemesis system is pretty next gen. Think about it - the NPC you create will be encountered by your fellow players. That is to say, you will have made a difference in your fellow players' experience of the game world, by means of your creation.

This is a step in the direction of the one big thing in MMO gaming that everyone has been complaining about since MMORPGs were invented: one's actions making no difference to the world.

I agree the Nemesis system is very cool and even though it's not PvP once you have one (Nemesis) you better keep looking over your shoulder :).

The Nemesis concept falls somewhat short of true customisation as it is only possible to realise as a generic mastermind, you may design the look and the powerset but it is then forced to behave in a wholly generic and indistinct manner. This is another reflection of the lack of progression - all that is effectively changed is inconsequential and superficial..... If a player could do something that changed another's experience, that dynamically altered content or delivered organic factors into world events, now that would indeed be next gen in my eyes (and was suggested/requested by myself and others since alpha) ..... but its lamentable that there is no evidence of that here, Nemesis content is about as simplistic and rudimentary as it gets and in truth there is far greater ability to customise and deliver a nemesis into the world in CoX's MIssions Architect.

Although it was a requested change during beta, my last understanding was that you and only you could encounter your nemesis' (unless you were on a team etc)?

I haven't been in the beta, but from what I can glean from posts on forums you will have indoor mishes with your Nemesis, and also he will occasionally ambush you out in the world. So far as I know, you can't yet do that with the MA in CoX (although I agree that's a great innovation - indeed that is also a next gen feature, comparable to some other big games of recent times).

Sure, it's not some huge leap, but it is next gen, if that means anything at all.  No other game at the moment has such a thing where your creation will impact others directly in the way that a public ambush would, by a supervillain neither passing heroes nor your teammates will ever have seen before.  Yes, it's only incremental, but it's a step in the direction of what players have been asking for in MMOs for years.
