Am I just out of touch?

After looking around at the boards it seems most people want more of the same image  People expressing more intrest in 'cooler' graphics while game engines for MMorpgs and systems remain stagnant.  I guess im one of the few that enjoys the challange of PvP, and an original concept in a MMorpg, instead of the same ol' leveling treadmill and spending hours getting a few points in some worthless crafting system.  Just not getting all the Hype over games like EQ2 or WoW, but guess im out of touch image

Well, if you enjoy PVP then you should enjoy WoW.  While the game has few originalities it does, in my opinion, greatly improve on the rest of the field available at the moment and adds instancing/open play in an interesting combination.

If you have not played it I urge you to give it a try.  I saw some video's, looked at a few SS's and I wasn't impressed.  I read the boards and the community annoyed me in many ways.  By luck I got into the stress test, I loaded it up with little expectation....and was impressed, nay almost addicted within my first (and only) 3 days playing.

That is why the hype over WoW...as for EQ2? well I've yet to play but it doesn't sound good.

By luck you got into the stress test?? the stress test was pretty much a free for all..

Anyway I went into the World of Warcraft Stress Test with a lot of expectations. I started out with my friends in a group and had moderate fun.. we had to compete with almost 50 other people for the same damn mob for multiple quests... how dumb is that.. everyone circles around 1 spot because that mob spawns at the exact same location each time.. boring..

after the first day I had to solo.. I couldn't do quests because I wasn't high enough level either to complete the quest or to get to the area without being slaughtered by other mobs.. so that forced me to do the grind.. again.. coming from FFXI I was sick and tired of killing the same mob 100 times over and over and over.. WoW is no different. I quit after 3 days when it became apperent WoW was just another time sink designed to keep you doing the same repetative thing hours on end so you keep paying.

I'm not a big fan of EQ2 either. I've become very skeptical of it. Yet I havn't had any chance to play it so I will reserve any final decision on the game unlike the previous biased poster. I have not given up on WoW.. I will most definately play the Open Beta.. but I don't think the actual gameplay will change all that much. I'll be waiting for one of Dark and Light, Wish, or Guild Wars. Any one of which introduce new and interesting game features.

Not if you live in Europe image I just happened to have the foresight to call up a wonderful lady I know in the states and get her to provide me with a complete set of dodgey details to fill in a beta app all that time ago.

Hmm bored after 3 days? Unlucky.

I came into the stress test a little late, the newb grounds were fairly clear and i was also playing on UK time.  I had an absolute blast, you just got stuck in the horrible bit on the start where EVERYONE is in the same parts of the same few zones *shrug*

Good luck in finding a better game image

Well if you are looking for PvP, I suggest you check out Ryl. Its open beta right now, and for not being into pvp much, I am actually enjoying myself. One friend of mine compared Ryl to Knights Online done right. Check it out.

I had no problem with all the people in the same place.. that's to be expected... My issue is that the mob spawns in the exact same place.. they could at least try having it spawn in different places.. make people search for it.. nope.. what happens if you start a new class/character.. you have to repeat the exact same quests.. I highly encourage you to do some research on some of the other games out there. You will be blown away by what they have to offer and wonder why WoW and EQ2 are the same old repetative junk.

A few static spawns just isn't a game breaker for me.  Having played up to lvl 18 I didn't find a great deal of those static spawn mob quests.  Each starting area has a completely different look and feel with different quests...starting exactly the same char over then yes, it would be the same.

I am interested in which games you think do or will blow them away? I am following most of the current MMO's in development and have played almost every one of the ones available...I am yet to see a game so polished for lauch considering most aren't this polished after several years  (AC2, AO, SWG, EVE, DAOC, FFXI, CoH, WW2OL, HZ, SB to name but a few).

WoW sounded very promising when I heard about the faction based PvP...  But then after hearing that the actual mechanics of the game are level based I know that is will be a poor PvP system, as all level based PvP systems are....  There is really no way around it, level based PvP is a poor system, no ifs ands or buts about it.

It looks like you are a fan of PvP. There IS a market for PvP. But it is not a problem of what "most people want". It is a problem that runs in every industry, music, fashion, TV, movies, and... MMORPGs. The moneymen push what they think will sell. Back in the day ....... from late 1970's to mabye early 1990's, the game DEVs (like Lord British) did not need to go to the money men at all. They could experiment as much as they want. Players had more direct influence on the games. Recently, over the past 5 years, the moneymen aka suits and ties, have as much power, and sometimes more power than the game DEVs. Most moneymen do NOT play the computer games they fund. All they are intrested in is the bottom line. And they will force the game makers to do what they think will make the most money. Like making clone after game clone. Like NOT experiementing.

yah xploror is pretty much right.... vivendi universal games owns blizzard who is developin WoW, and they own turbine who is developin D&DO and MeO.... so its expected that these games wont have tons of new features but will b pretty much clones of the mmorpgs that sell ^_^ and since EQ is like the biggest mmorpg in the us, and it has no pvp whatsoever, dont expect these new mmorpgs to have much pvp either ^^

still WoW at least seem to have a bit of pvp, kinda like daocs pvp system, so i myself will go for that one ^_^

Richijefe... level 61 Silver Ranger on Bartz... quit 4 months ago ^_^

Your mis-informed about PvP I believe. There is absolutely no difference between a level or skill based system when it comes to PvP. With both platforms (among other things) the higher skilled or the higher leveled player has an advantage in 1v1. And with both platforms, just because your higher doesn’t mean your safe from harm when outnumbered.

I believe your thinking is very limited and disjointed. Mmorpg development is for a multi-national market, not just the US. To make a comparison or assumption of a mmorpg’s reining based on one country is inaccurate I think. Because one game is popular in one country is meaningless and having said that, EQ is not the “biggest” mmorpg. http://pw1.netcom.com/~sirbruce/Subscriptions.html

EQ2 wont do near as well as EQ.

nowhere close! But anywho, more mmorpgs are stating to cater to the niche. Toa, DnL, ect.. This is the future, you cant appeal to everyone, some people wont play w/o PvP and some wont play if there is any PvP. There is no middle ground for a game to take that will please both sides. So you pick on or the other.

Niche is the way its going, and a lot of the smaller developers and realizing this, but unfortunatly, many big name companies are still trying to appeal to the mass market and pretty soon they are gona have their player base yanked out.

Cik, are you high? Or just stupid? I hate to turn this to a flame, but damn man... why cant you absorb into your thick skull that character level DOES NOT = skill. Its not the same thing, period. Characater level = time invested. Skill = player talent. A pvp system based on level will always = poor pvp. While one based on character skill = better pvp.

Baah, Im not even goin to go into it...

Nice insults, Devil. Don’t apologize for turning another thread into a flame with an immature maneuver like that since your intentions are insincere. I expect that from those that are blind to reason and continue to want to be a part of the problem with sites like this.

The reality is that I was responding to the statement that a level based system PvP environment is poor, and that the inference was that it will fail and that there is no answer to think otherwise.

I simply stated that there isn’t a difference between level and skill based PvP systems considering that the mechanics of both platforms can share similar programming whereby the level number or skill number of one player isn’t the overriding factor in outcome.

But thanks for a glimpse into your character anyway.
