Don’t tell me what I want to play in a StarTrek game. Stating everyone wants to be a Caption isn’t the best way to sell the game. When the game was first announced and they talked about roles I wanted to be Tactical Officer or Engineer. I can already play a lot of good StarTrek games as caption right now with no monthly fee.
Sorry to bring the 'disgruntled SWG vet' argument over this way, but this is exactly what went wrong with SWG. They told us players we didn't want to be Uncle Owen the moisture farmer, and that we all wanted to be Luke and Han etc...
Of all the lessons to learn in as an MMO developer, you'd think they'd have at least learned from the SWG NGE.
Now, I'm a fan of ST as well, and I can tell you right now, that I'd rather be Spock than Kirk, or better yet, a nameless Ambassador or starship engineer or communications officer.
Designing a game where everyone plays the main hero that saves the galaxy is simply just a cop out, and frankly, I think most ST fans will smell the BS before paying.
This is exactly my feelings about this game too.
It has nothing Star Trek in it, other then the ST franchise style skins.
It's just a Spaceship shooter game with a glorified chatbox in wich all the kiddies can flex their Epeen as Captain Kirk who WTFPWNED your butt.
Total joke and a disgrace to the Star Trek franchise!
Seriously, the whole direction of this game makes me believe the designers have never seen any Star Trek series at all!
And I am far from a hardcore trekkie whatsoever (I loved the latest Trek movie!).
Everyone who has followed the series and showed any interest in the ST franchise knows that Star Trek is about EXPLORATION and not PAWNING eachothers butts, PEW PEW PEW in space with ships!

Your trying to lump all fans of star trek into those weirdos who dress up at conventions and recite the rules of acquisition from memory. You may say that this star trek isnt about the combat, but ask most fans of star trek what their favorite episodes are and they will undoubtedly name an episode where there was a huge fleet battle or some sort of combat took place. Im not saying that people dont like the character interactions and scenes where geordi and data are trying to upgrade the warp engines and stuff, but really, that would make a snore of a game. Who really wants to sit in a jeffries tube for 8 hours re-aligning plasma relays or running diagnostics in sick bay...
Wow, so much hate and bile over a 5 minute highlights clip. And how, precisely, was Cryptic supposed to showcase footage of...exploring? Dialog? All the associated stuff that happens in between battles on ST? Call me crazy, but showing footage of some badly-animated alpha-production-level character walking around scanning junk with a tricorder isn't exactly what most people would call "exciting".
Nobody's asking for 5 minutes of exploration, or dialog etc. It's that that stuff, which is essential to ST, ALONG WITH COMBAT, was not present in the video AT ALL.
Tricorders are as important to Trek as phasers are.
If you want examples of how to show exploration in an MMO trailer, how about taking a look at any other MMO trailer.
Cryptic should be showing US how exploration is done in an MMO trailer.
I do want to preface this with the fact that yes, I do realize it's way too early to judge the game. But if this is what they are showing, then this is what they WANT to show, which means this is what they see as important, meaning this is how the game will likely end up.

Let me just say I am not a hard core ST fan. Just a casual fan, and likely, the actual target demographic for STO.
Aside from the episode where Kirk fought Spock because of Spock's 'pon far', I honestly can't name a particular episode that had an epic space battle or combat. Not that I don't remember it happening, it's just that it happens at least once per episode, and is rarely particularily memorable (aside from the movie space battles ... I'm looking at YOU Wrath Of Khan).
I DO on the other hand clearly recount the episode of TNG where the holodeck malfunctions and traps the crew in another time period, or they find the laboratory where Data was created (and his brother), and especially the episode where Data and Yar hook up etc etc... these are memorable character experiences that are what make ST so engaging, which is also what makes RPGs in general so engaging. The trailer may be early, but the RPG mechanic should have been demonstrated if that's what mattered to Cryptic. The game is set to launch in less than a year (a blink of an eye in dev time). If it's not almost finished now, it never will be, and if it is, why didn't they show it?

you paid for a lifetime subscription then your gonna just go out and play another game....I pity you.
EDIT: I also agree with you SWG vet. SWG was way better when you could be uncle owen the moisture farmer =(
There's a difference between having combat play a large role, and having only combat.
Ideally, the options will be very diverse, and you can be on a medical vessel/science vessel/etc. and focus on options other than combat.
I read somewhere that this game has a random space generator that allows the game to let you discover an endless supply of new systems. Cool concept (Bet you can't go back there after you leave though).
What bothers me the most (and I mean, it REALLY bothers me) is that I haven't seen any screenshots of the interior of the ship recently. If I can't move around the inside of my ship (I mean, the whole thing), then I'm frankly not very interested. I thought the coolest thing about a game like this would have been to run the ship with a group of friends (someone at helm, someone at weapons, science station, etc.). Clearly this won't happen, but I would at least like to be able to walk around the ship.
I seriously hope this isn't like other games where you can't fly through an area without being attacked 10 times by various roaming ships and space entities. Most combat should start with one ship hailing another, and you should be able to choose options to avoid combat. I'm quite concerned that Cryptic is messing this one up badly....
I'm just waiting for a F2P overhyped sandbox WoW clone with full PVP, epic raid bosses, instanced group content, and Crysis-quality graphics to come out. That, or something fun.

They said that that won't be in at launch.
There are missions were you enter your ship, like a defend against boarding party type mission.
I doubt you be able to walk around the whole ship... it's going to be limited, when and if they put it in.
I'm excited as the main focus is rigt where it should be for this period...on the combat! I plan on playing the klingon side and certainly hope the exploration/trades/interaction reflect the traditions and values the Klingon hold so dear...total carnage! Inside of the ships should be for boarding parties as we Kilingons pillage the peace loving federation in HAND TO HAND COMBAT, up close and personal like! Sure I want to explore a planet or object in space, then figure out the best way to subject/destroy/exploit/profit from my experience. You Federation types can have all the boring interaction stuff like figuring out what makes a space creature the way he is, me I just want to destroy it! I'm all for your huggy feelie crew interaction as long as the Klingon interaction is made up of fighting and bickering instead. Don't tell us Star Trek is mostly about non-combat/viloence as you obviously haven't watch it from the proper point of view...Klingon!
I'm betting each and every hater in this thread are going to pick this game up when it comes out.
I wouldn't consider myself a hater just yet, since I personally have not played it yet, and remain hopeful Cryptic knows ST better than I do and will make the game as it should. I'd like to repeat though, that I do think as a casual ST fan, I am assuming I am at the very heart of their target demographic. Turns out though, I'm also TORs target demographic, and Aions target demographic (not as much though) among others. Alot of MMO's are competing for my $15 a month (and yours).
I was planning on trying STO, and I was even hoping it would kick TORs ass a little bit. After watching this preview, now I'm not so sure.
I'll definitely try to get into the beta, and I hope they do a good job. I really do.

I just want a Interactive Bridge, and I'm good.
I guess I'd settle for a bridge. I really like simulators... This third person stuff kind of leaves me with a detached feeling... How can you feel like Captain Kirk with no captain's chair, and no bridge (at the very least)?
It seems like it wouldn't be that difficult to put in ship interiors. Just make each class of ship into an instance, and each captain, while walking around their ship, is just in an instance of the same ship that every other captain of that class is in (does that make sense?)
Customizing would be nice, but it's not like Starfleet would allow Kirk to let MTV put the Enterprise on "Pimp my Starship"...

I do have to admit, the 1 foot distance phaser firing circle jerks were a bit laughable.

"...Some sort of combat took place". Be more vague.
CIty on the Edge of Forever
The Trouble With Tribbles
I, Mudd
Not a lot of combat in those.
TNG:
The Inner Light
Darmok (has some fighting, but is about learning to communicate with an alien race)
You are as clueless about ST as Cryptic.

Look village idiot, every individual has there own idea in their head as to what Star Trek is to them.
Star Trek is an IP, not merely a TV series/Movie. They are free to explore that universe.
You really should do more research on the game before throwing a little hissy fit. Or if you already have, like most of the posters in this thread have likely done, stop pretending to be ignorant. It's not cute.
Like others have said, this game is still very young. Give it some time. Maybe if there were fewer people on these forums not ready to take a dump on every new game that's around the corner, we might have more of the Devs actually looking through these threads. I know if I was involved in the development of an mmo, there is no way I'd be in here trying filter through all of the crap.

Balogna!
The most commonly referenced title would be Star Trek: Wrath of Khan. How many times was a handheld phaser fired in the movie, 3 times? How many starship battles were there, 2 seperate engagements between 2 loan ships?
That movie was about pure unadultered suspense, suspense which was driven by discovery. At each step of the way the viewer is seeing something unexpected and discovering something new. The Kobayasi(sp) test, with Kristie Alley(sp) wasn't real, they thought they were on Ceti Alpha 6, they did not know Khan commandered a ship, they did not know Chekov was infested by a brain slug thingy, they were virtually blind in the climactic finale in the nebula!
Wrath of Khan is the most memorable work of Star Trek yet created and it had the least amount of phasers being fired or ships being attacked in comparison to any other fan favorite.
Why?
Simple, it was through suspense in the discovery of the unknown which made the movie a masterpiece.
useless trvia - did you know William Shatner and Ricardo Montalban never acted side-by-side?
My favorite quote from the movie: This IS Ceti Alpha 5!

I think it has to be re-iterated that this is very early stages for the game, when you have a huge convention going on showing something action-esq is going to get more views that some dialogue options between people. As games are made they have different stages to them added in right, the diplomacy, questing and exploration parts are things I am sure will come through as time goes on. Looking at the latest Mass Effect 2 trailer with explainations about fuel consumption, scanning parts of worlds and so on is something I think will filter through with this game too. Just need to give it some time.
The IP of Star trek is huge, this game could be way bigger than Star wars if done correctly. But alas they have a bunch of monkeys from Cryptic on it. This game should be at the same hype level or eevn more than star wars and should be getting multi millions dollar budget that Star wars is getting, but Cryptic have deemed this game to be 2nd rate to CO, and CO is total FAIL. All I see of this game is what could have been and what should be, and all I kepe thinking is Crytpic are making it as a Fail game from the start.
lmao star trek IPs bigger than star wars? In what country? In what world I would say? Star Wars IP is much bigger than Star Trek IP, anyone with a bit of sense in them knows this.

Star trek was big long before Star wars was even a fuucking thought of george lucases stolen story. Star trek has a huge following, u heard the term trekkie, nobody says starwarsekkie do they? Star trek lore, and history is bigger than anything thing star wars has. There are probably millions more fans of Star trek than star wars has.

They said that that won't be in at launch.
There are missions were you enter your ship, like a defend against boarding party type mission.
I doubt you be able to walk around the whole ship... it's going to be limited, when and if they put it in.
I'm just waiting for a F2P overhyped sandbox WoW clone with full PVP, epic raid bosses, instanced group content, and Crysis-quality graphics to come out. That, or something fun.

I do have to admit, the 1 foot distance phaser firing circle jerks were a bit laughable.

That's certainly one way to put it!

Sorry to pick on you Kurganxy.
My favorite quote from the movie: This IS Ceti Alpha 5!

here, here well said
I think it has to be re-iterated that this is very early stages for the game, when you have a huge convention going on showing something action-esq is going to get more views that some dialogue options between people. Just need to give it some time.
lmao star trek IPs bigger than star wars? In what country? In what world I would say? Star Wars IP is much bigger than Star Trek IP, anyone with a bit of sense in them knows this.

Star trek was big long before Star wars was even a fuucking thought of george lucases stolen story. Star trek has a huge following, u heard the term trekkie, nobody says starwarsekkie do they? Star trek lore, and history is bigger than anything thing star wars has. There are probably millions more fans of Star trek than star wars has.

LMAO! I see what you did there. Nobody says Eurekkie, so there must be more ST fans than people in Europe! Nobody say Chinekkie, so there must be more ST fans than people in China! Nobody say Earthekkie, so there MUST be more ST fans than people on Earth! Interesting logic you have.
FYI, IGN has a much better version of this video http://pc.ign.com/dor/objects/14270158/star-trek-online/videos/gcom09_startrek_trl_082009.html
Enjoy... or don't.
You are exactly the sucker,,, I mean player that Cryptic is looking for.
Someone with a 'waiting for Darkfall' blurb in his sig may want to be mindful on calling others a 'sucker'. Glass houses and all that.
Can I get an amen?! That was the polite way of handing him a huge can of STFU. Very well played indeed.
You Sir are my hero.
