IMHO it is far to early to judge this code as its miles away from any type of game which you could call a game with regards to content, very easy for anyone to judge it at this time but I would be tempted to wait until after December at the very least.
From what I have read and heard it appears that the dervs are working flat out trying to appease complaints and get the code right, the feed-back they listen to and act on as quickly as they can which is brilliant.
I will refrain from making any comments as a plus or minus after seeing all the pathetic things which went on with DFO and I feel this could turn out to be another trolling campaign if we are not careful and imo that would be quite sad. Saying that its pretty obvious that most of the posting on this site has to be taken with a pinch of salt.
The mods on here are so biased and I feel they do not control these boards enough to keep things civil but thats just my opinion.
I'm really not in the mood to read constant rambaling so im just going to put my 2 cents in and go on my way.
Ok this doesn't compare to other recent betas but if you played in betas from earlier generations like say EQ they went through steps not just throw the game at people and let them work out the bugs of more stuff than they can chew. Betas now a days like multiple people have said are eye candy, they are a marketing idea.
I will admit the game does look like it is in alpha but to be perfectly honest we don't know what features they already have complete, for all we know taming might be done, housing might be done, they just have not implimented it yet because they are taking it one step at a time and personally fixing their server stability issues is at the top of my list of things i would want them to fix first.
All in all for me, like so many people have done wanting refunds for their pre-orders because they are to used to having a company giving them a completed game for beta I could seriously care less if you are that frail than oh well, people are judging the book by its cover, they arent letting the story come to fruitation before putting it down.
As a matter of fact I did, and if this "zone" is an example as to what to expect... The game should still be delayed due to lack of content. The zone was completely empty...
They will be releasing actual content for testing after next week.
This isn't the game.
They aren't testing the functions of the game so much as the server stability. The actual content is supposed to be implimented a little at a time over the next couple of weeks.
Expect magic to be in very soon. If you've been able to log in since the latest client build you will know why.
Pretty much everything you wrote is idiotic.
You're rating a "game" this is barely even a game at this stage.
Most of the actual content is supposed to be pretty much done, simply not implimented yet. It's supposed to come after they get the MassiveLOD system in.
You're only able to see half of a SINGLE continent. The continent that will be ready at release. The other 4 or 5 are being put in after release.
Even in at this stage of beta MO is already better then most of the MMO's I've played in the past couple of years, and I'm enjoying my experiences more then most of the released games I've played lately.
It sounds like you were expecting way more then you were told to.
Or you're just a troll trying to spread negativety.
OP`s complaints are legit and he is on the right track but I think he tries hard to avoid to say what he really thinks so he doesn`t get labeled as a troll.
Well I`m pretty much immune to any forum drama and I preffer to be very blunt about things I say so heres my final analysis:
All of the people that pre-ordered just so they can get in Beta (a disquisting practice of game companies in first place) got decieved by the company in question because the game is in early stages of Alfa.
That`s right.
They needed cash so tricked some of you fools to pay for Alfa testing.
They didn`t break any laws obviously but presenting their very early stage of game developement as Beta testing just so they can squeeze a buck or two is what should worry anyone that is sane.
It looks like OP is very small minority though and most of you are more then happy to pay and continue paying for something that YOU should be payed for doing.
Whatever floats your boat I guess, just don`t whine when the game launch gets postponed until summer 2010...
I care about your gaming 'problems' and teenage anxieties, just not today.

Alfa? what are we paying for a female version of Alf?
No one that pre-ordered the game can say they were decieved, they told us what we would be testing even before you ordered the preorder so have did they decieve us.
A lot of people didn't order the pre-order for beta we ordered it for the final product and to help support Starvault. Considering its probably the last hope for a FFA PvPFull LootSand Box game for a long time coming I would rather not see it fail because of financial problems, especially if they stick to what they have claimed to be bringing to the game.

I understand what you are saying here even though I don`t approve of it.
I don`t think it`s smart to invest yourself so much emotionaly (and somewhat financially) in a video game just because it has some features you like.
I think full loot and severe death penalties are things of the past, has-been system that is only hyped by some vet gamers because of their UO nostalgia.
I seriosly doubt that many people that enjoyed UO will enjoy any other full loot game as much.
It`s just a nostalgia kicking in for the times when we were all MMO noobs.
Just like the players that started with EQ can never enjoy PVE and raiding as much as they did in EQ etc.
But whatever, I didn`t want to patronize anyone and I`m sorry for doing it.
I`m old school gamer that watches the development of this game closely but after playing so many failures and geting frustrated by it I have new rules of never playing betas anymore and I only get involved in a game after at least 3 months post launch.
I care about your gaming 'problems' and teenage anxieties, just not today.
Originally posted by Soopy i completely agree with you. i have been following this game for a couple months now just trying to soak up more and more information about the game. MANY people have whined saying 'its not going to be out for another 2-3 years from the looks of the beta", but the developers have stated that they are dong the beta in phases. so the first phase was alpha where they only tested combat. the next phase was just testing the servers and stability. during this phase many people could basically only run and jump around naked. after this phase was done they added in more features they already completed for the game to let more users test them out.
Following the game for information is fine, but until you actually test the game and see its actual state, please hold your opinions. For those that remember the Vanguard beta, this is a perfect example, that game was nowhere ready to be launched, and those of us who tested the game said that... But what do you know, Sigil and SoE released the game anyways over 1 year prior to when they should have, and the game just now has started to recover. I for one am done paying to beta test games at launch (SWG, Vanguard, AoC....) and as paying customers we should all hold the compaines to a higher standard.
Fool me once,
shame on you.
Fool me twice,
..... well you know the rest.
Sounds like you would be better fitted to wait out for some solid input from the community which is willing to take a chance at launch than to pay for a game at beta/launch From your previous post it looks as if you didn't even read what you were getting yourself into before pressing that "buy" button. For me it really isn't that tough to wait a month after launch to get some good insight on whether this game is a good match for me or not. I play games for fun not to test them(unless it's free and I'm bored). I have a job already, don't need a second one. $50 will go towards the beer I will drink waiting to figure out if the game is what I want to spend my next $50 on.
To be honest, I could care less about the NDA seeing as people who pre-ordered the game are getting hosed in obtaining refunds. However, that is not what this thread is about and we will save that for another time.
I have played the game, and from the 3 times that I have actually been able to login...and from the 6 hours of playtime, there is one thing that worries the hell out of me. It is the similarities to the beta of Vanguard. This game looks incredible at first, so you are taken aback visually. However, thats where the honeymoon ends. In my time in the game, I ran from one side of the actual gaming "world" to the other...and to be honest its about as big as...the barrens (if that). I was not able to travel farther due to running into an invisible wall...this wall encircled the entire "world" of the game and literally took about 30 mins to travel across. This is where the comparison to Vanguard comes in, for those that remember the start of VG, it was a huge empty world. MO's world is not huge however it is completely empty. Devoid of almost any type of mob, except for pigs, deer, and bison looking things which number about 20 in all..At this level of production to date, I expect volumes more...
The combat is decent, much like what you would expect from an Oblivion type mmo. It is a tad clunky, and slow to respond however being one of the first twitch based mmos I would tend to forgive the issues. The armor and such is visually pleasing, more realistic which I prefer.
I would have to say that overall out of 10 I would give the game a 4... And before people start up with the "its only beta, blah, blah" I would ask themselves to think back on all the games that they have beta tested. Those games were at a point where they could be released and survive to a certain extent (SWG for example). Good or bad, there was at least a finished world where you can see where the game is headed...not just an empty "zone-world". And that in itself is the issue with Mortal Online. If the beta is any example of where the actual "status" of the game is...it should be pushed back at least another couple years. Just my 2 cents...
You know i've been looking up on Mortal online and all i see is the same old formula of fail:
- very few coverage oif the game in the press;
- no "positive" beta leaks (in that regard, SWG and WoW were the only 2 AAA games with massive positive feedback from Beta); which tells alot about the quality of the game;
Imo, if the game release Q4 2009, it's going to be empty : of mobs, of quests, of content.
My addiction History: >> EQ1 2000-2004 - Shaman/Bard/Wizard/Monk - nolife raid-whore >> WoW 2004-2009 + Cataclysm for 2 months - hardcore casual >> Current status : done with MMO, too old for that crap.

Just because a game has a lot of press coverage, and reviews doesnt mean its a good game. Shit look at AoC, your basing your opinion on leaked info. This is one reason for an NDA so people don't create opinions on the game pre-release....
Only factual statement in your post is there will be no quests, you'd know that if you researched the game....

"Hello person posting on a site specifically for MMO's in a thread on a sub forum specifically for a particular game talking about meta features and making comparisons to other titles in the genre, and their meta features.
MO is made by a small, independent developer. You can't hold them up to the same measuring stick as SOE, Blizzard or Turbine. Their beta is a true beta. Not some marketing, gimmick "beta" test which is what a lot of games are doing these days. They've stated that the beta test is going to happen in phases, gradually introducing more and more aspects of the game. When I played in the LotRO private beta, the game was far from finished. Invisible walls all over the place. Bugs with various parts of the game. Gimpy fast travel. Ghost bear. Etc. When the game was finally released, it was much more polished and quite stable. There were still issues, but it went from being a "this game isn't ready for release at all" kind of game to one of the smoothest, best launched games I've ever played.
That's Starvault propaganda. A "beta weekend" a week or so before the game is launched is a gimmick, a beta months beforehand is a normal beta and something that 99% of the mmo companies out there do. Mortal Online is essentially in an alpha stage at the moment and will ADMITTEDLY be released in a beta phase with only the core features in-tact. Why pretend otherwise and then set yourself up to be disappointed at release when you end up playing one of the most unfinishedreleased mmo's of all-time? This game is at least a year away from being ready for even a half-decent release.

Just gotta say this, are you even in beta for one. If you are, do you know exactly what SV is holding back? If you aren't a part of the company working on the game I find it difficult to find any type of backing to your post. I am not getting my hopes up if this game flops oh well, I just don't like seeing postings that have no backing whatsoever.

The fact that is is a beta is actually a real excuse. In fact, it's obvious that you missed the part where Starvault released their beta goals, and right up in the beginning of the list were the words 'technical beta'. Over the past month and a half, they have been testing the patcher, login, character creation, and server stability. And at this time, it's pretty rare that I'm not able to log in and stay logged in for a significant amount of time. So again, I'll remind you that the initial beta phase has been focused heavily on getting the server running as smoothly as possible. After all, would it be any fun playing the best game ever made while crashing and getting booted every five minutes from the server?
The reason for the world being emply is the exclusion of a LOD system that will greatly enhance your performance while allowing them to start adding content. I'm not sure when you wrote this, but if all goes according to plan, Starvault will be adding massive amounts of content in one weeks time. It seems like people are so used to seeing these major companies release 'marketing beta' access, and it seems as if most people don't understand the difference. There is a lot of work that has to be done, they are a small team. They have limited resources, why do you think we all have to pre-order? Win-Win situation for them. They get money to further development and they get free beta testers that are actually fans of the game and want to see a product that they can be proud of.
I'm not allowed to talk about anything specific. I pre-ordered the game though, so you can draw your conclusions. I will say that I am pleased with what I've seen for the most part. Is it perfect? Nothing is perfect. By the way, the reason it seems small is because they are only allowing players to test a little less than half of the starting continent. So, that 30 minutes could become and hour or more. That is running time. It can be shortened by magical means or by horseback.
Also, Vanguard was released in a state of utter garbage and in some cases, still is garbage. Mortal Online is at least two months away from launch. Honestly, I wouldn't expect it until early to mid-december at the earliest. Their timeline is the fourth quarter for release, they haven't said or done anything that would argue against that either. It's so frustrating that most people can't see past their first impression. All they do is they look and they scream bloody murder about anything. Even if there isn't much to complain about. I'm not saying to give them a free ride because they are an indi company. I'm saying let them do their jobs. If it's released and it's not in a playable state, then I can understand. Though, it's in a playable state now.. even if most of the features aren't in. So.. yeah.
Seems there are similar groups here as was for DF..
Group A is skeptical that SV can pull off additions of content ( land mass , mobs , quests , npcs , crafting.. ect. ) and keep the server stable and bugs to a minimum. And that is completely understandable.
Group B seems to think SV can fip a switch and have smooth sailing after adding content that is needed. If they have to test server stability now with such little what is it going to be like when they throw a bunch of stuff in with little testing? Crashes and lots of them.
Group C likes to hide behind " its beta ' tag line thinking that actually means anything this close to release.
If the game releases this year then it WILL be a disaster. You cant do what SV needs to do to get ready for release in such a short time. They need to hold off to Mid Next year at least.
Just give Starvault their chance. They will decide their own fate, and all we can do is watch, or try to help them out beta testing.
In the meantime Darkfall has come a long way and is really shaping up. I jumped back into it and man i'm happy I did. You guys should consider doing the same because MO is still a long ways out. I will be beta testing MO, and playing Darkfall at the same time. It doesn't have to be all one or the other. They are both games that try to fill a void in this genre and they should both be supported imo.
If you think Starvault is some mesiah that won't have the same problems Aventurine had with Darkfall you will be really disappointed. They are a small team tackling a huge project. It won't release all polished. You will have to make sacrifices if you want to play from day 1, and there will be many bumps along the way. It will be just like Darkfall or maybe even worse. The difference is the devs seem to be much more vocal about what is going on, but that might change going towards release.
To be honest, I could care less about the NDA seeing as people who pre-ordered the game are getting hosed in obtaining refunds. However, that is not what this thread is about and we will save that for another time.

Oh I don't know maybe they can avoid the worst of AV stupidty ? Or not ?
Maybe by not manually inputting credit card info on the launch day leading to some people getting to the game for free and some people being triple charged. And hey ... Stardock could always NOT launch one European server and allow the Americans on then charge them again whilst leading people to believe there would be no transfer fee ? And they too can NOT have teh haxor boats ?
Face it Stardock would have to try real hard to be as stupid as AV. Still even on one tenth of AVs fail... stardock might mess up. Oh were never going have a decent MMO. *Wail* ! I blame Tasos .. he took my innocence.
To be honest, I could care less about the NDA seeing as people who pre-ordered the game are getting hosed in obtaining refunds. However, that is not what this thread is about and we will save that for another time.

The only thing that bothers me about LOD system is that it should be a client side only feature. The server shouldn't care how detailed the textures are displayed on your screen.
1.) They are only testing specific things in the beta. They said this A LOT. For all anyone knows there could be 15 continents. They are currently testing graphical performance and combat.
2.) to the person who said something about small time companies:
THIS IS EPIC GAMES WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT MCFEJKNLDEJKDFNEJKWLMEWNFEW

Your somewhat mistaken, this isn't Epic Games, this is Starvault developing MO. Epic games is just helping out with stuff that has to do with engine related problems and what not.

You know i've been looking up on Mortal online and all i see is the same old formula of fail:
- very few coverage oif the game in the press;
- no "positive" beta leaks (in that regard, SWG and WoW were the only 2 AAA games with massive positive feedback from Beta); which tells alot about the quality of the game;
Imo, if the game release Q4 2009, it's going to be empty : of mobs, of quests, of content.
My addiction History:
>> EQ1 2000-2004 - Shaman/Bard/Wizard/Monk - nolife raid-whore
>> WoW 2004-2009 + Cataclysm for 2 months - hardcore casual
>> Current status : done with MMO, too old for that crap.

Seems like you were under the impression you were getting a completed product.

"you crossed the whole beta in 30 mins? i call BS on this"
The devs have stated that it takes 45 minutes to cross the game world from one side to the next, that's quite small.

Seems like you were under the impression you were getting a completed product.

he doesnt relize the whole game world isnt even activaited cause the massive lod isnt in yet

Iiii-iiiiiit's.... me!!! *Hooray*

Read the MO forums more often, Beta so far only has about 12% of the games world open atm
