I think the thing people are most worried about is that the empires they have built through years of hard work might suddenly start to collapse because of the actions of console players who have nothing really to do with the original game. They are concerned that this new aspect of the EVE universe might trivialize the existing game universe that many people have heavily invested in.
In other words, the super elite who the game is catered towards right now are terrified they might not remain the super elite.
Personally, I'm all for Dust, finally an Eve universe with some decent pacing. I still hold that the "lets do it on consoles" gimmick is a bad idea and that they should have at least made PC an option if not exclusive.
Yeah, I think your starting to zero in on it. I also think CCP is in a tight spot when it comes to how to deal w/ the monster they have created. This defiantly isn't pouring love on the whole big alliance thing and that’s where the fear stems from IMHO
From talking in-game, a lot of the alliance "grunts" are just glad the POS grind is going to go away. Dont assume that everyone who lives in 0.0 has the same or even similar views.
I don't doubt this at all. CCP have always been forward thinking in there actions, and usually successful. Still, there is a solid history here of political powerblocks and people are concerned about it. Rightfully so I would think.

Of course everyone is happy that pos grind is going away, but this is more on the "workers"-layer. Onn the top of everything, the 'leaders' are running around in circles, worrying how they are going to secure their space. What if some carebear with isk coming out of his ears decide that he wants someones space f*ed? He'll hire a DUST crew to take over the planets and wait for things to happen.
Of course, alliance leaders will hire defences, and at one point one will be bankrupt and whoever still has isk left wins.
Say I have a carebear alt and I get mad at.. Say, GoonSwarm. Also, lets assume I have WAY to much cash lying around, and I've saved every isk I could (ie. no fancy pancy, just own what I need). Now, I hire a DUST crew or two to take over planets in Goon space. If/when I run out of money before the mission is accomplished, I'll just sell a few GTCs and get it over with. Now, with the huge alliances, it might not be such a big problem, but still.. It's worth considering. (Especially since "Dusties" are considered 'poor' in the way that they might make as much in their entire lifespan as a pod pilot makes in a day.. So a few billion isk should be enormous amounts)
Also, I could always bribe the defending (alliance-hired) DUST crew, and BAM treachery. I win? Or what if the DUST crew aren't satisfied? Will they just stop attacking/defending - or will they do the opposite (ie defenders starting to attack)? And what will happen when all the defenders you hired are offline, and you're being attacked? Should you just hire a new crew? In that case, you'll need a crew for each timezone (at the very least). Oh, and you'll need the best teams. And you'll need to pay them good, just in case someone else comes along with a better offer.
There are lots of speculations still, and I, for one, am still waiting for more information to be released. I have many friends in major alliances, and many of them are disturbed/scared of the fact that DUST is going to affect sov. Wether or not their fears are valid will be revealed at the same time as it is revealed how much DUST will affect sov.
POS grind lessened = good.
Leaving matters into other peoples hands = not so good.

I don't think Dust will have that big of an impact on the Sov system. Sure they help with planets but I doubt CCP would let sov totally come down to Dust players.
Maybe a slight advantage to having a good dust army at your disposal or a slight buff but that's all. As all sandbox features go it should beable to be completely avoided if one chooses.

If you're going to make a saying of DOOM, you must make it DOOMISH enough :P.
I always expect the worst case scenario. (You know.. Looking at the ship you bring to battle as already blown up, so you won't get sad when it finally does)
Although, I do agree. I do not think DUST will affect sov that much, but just the fact that it affects sov is reason of worry in the top-levels of alliances.

I doubt a Dust incursion supported with nothing more than 1 player's ISK would be any more successful than a capital incursion supported the same way would be now.
