Hi, I'm currently downloading the game and I've tried the trial before, but I want to give the game a serious go, I'm burned out on wow.

One thing i do not like about this game is that a lot of things are in it just because, and they don't seem to serve the game itself.  like fishing and half of farming (pipe weed), other games add skills like these and manage to fully integrate it into the gameplay, other than that little bother aside these this is what  I'm looking at.

I really like to heal, and I tried the minstrel before, i like that its more involved and you have to do the tier thing.

So I'm going to make another minstrel, Is this a good idea for someone trying to get into the game, or is there a better choice?

Also for vocations, I want to be a yeoman because i like farming and cooking, but it seems if i do that ill be dirt poor and that might turn me off to the game.  I've read that explorer is the way to go for selling resources.  Is that actually viable or does everyone do it and the market is flooded.

Also I realize that asking the best race is a loaded question as ive read countless threads on it already.  But, for a new person It seems that hobbit or dwarf are the best choices for the extra hp.

I really want to like the game, if anyone could give me some tips to avoid getting frustrated and quitting, I'd appreciate it.

    Hey.

I envy you the feeling of starting Lotro from scratch, because you are in for a treat, RP Story-wise. I will try and comment and give you some pointers, but I havent played the game in two months now, so there might have been some changes I dont know about.

    • Crafting: If you are looking to earn som quick gold, Explorer is the way to go. Yeoman can be expensive, but you can make alot of gold when you reach top tier crafting. (high tier food is/was in high demand) As for Pipweeds and fishing being useless. Maybe for you, but they are mostly roleplaying features, which many people enjoy. note, you need specific fish to craft food that enchance your wisdom stat. Suggestion: As your first character, I recommend Explorer.
    • Race/Class: You would make no error in choosing a Minstrel. They are in high demand and are always welcome in groups. As for race, I would go for a hobbit. "Play Dead" race ability is very useful. But, all in all, it wont matter much which race you choose, you will perform well as any of the four. Remember, You dont have to use a guitar/lute as your instrument. You can buy a number of different instrument at the town bard. Flute and Harp is cool :)
    • Gameplay: I cant stress this enough - Take you time with the game. The best content in Lotro is found around mid-way to level-cap. Try to join groups and do group quests, this is where lotro really shines. If you cant find a group, try and start one up yourself. I think you'd be amazed how fast the group fills up.

I would write more, but have to go to work...

    Good Luck

Glad to see you're giving the game another shot. I reactivated my account 2 months ago with the intention of checking out the new Lothlorien area for a few days. My account's still active.  :D

If you like to heal but would like to try another class, may I suggest a Rune-Keeper? From your original post I wasn't sure if the two new classes (Rune-Keeper and Warden) were available to you the last time you played. The Rune-Keeper can switch from damage to healing (not right away mind you - that's something to always keep in mind during combat) but the RK has become a quite heavily-requested fellowship member, especially in the newer high-end instances. I do wish that the class was open to more races but as of now only Elves and Dwarves can be RK's.

As for profession I agree that explorer is the one to choose for quick $$. But if you prefer yeoman, go for it. If you are able to become proficient enough in the farming skill so you can craft critical items needed by scholars to make their dyes and by cooks to create better foods you may be able to get some respectable coin. But as always, what's important that you create a character that you enjoy playing. The good thing about the game is that you can level up fairly quickly at the early stages. (About 2 hours to get to level 10 is not unreasonable) so you can get a pretty good idea if you're going to like playing the class or not.

Anyway, hope this helps. See you in-game!

This is good advice here. As alternatives to the minstrel (that is very close to a "pure" healer). If you want to be a bit more flexible, or self sufficient, try a rune keeper, if support is what you like try a captain, while less of a healer than others, they are a good solid flexible support class, with a pet!.

    thanks for all the replies!

you are correct, the last time i played those two new classes were not available.  I have only played a trial and got to 15 or so.

I will definitely try both, maybe ill make one an explorer and one a yeoman, I really liked farming, but i remember going broke doing so.

Can an account that's gotten a trial referral get another one without making a new account?  I'm probably going to buy the game and it would  be nice if someone else could benefit from it.

i'm off to look into that new class.

I don't understand the question. Can you restate it?

You should have an alt be your Yeoman. The great thing about farming is that you don't ever have to leave the low level zones. I have a SM Farmer that's only level 2, basically a glorified mule that lives in the Shire. One minor problem with this is that if your Yeoman mule is going to also be your cook, you won't be able to use any of the high level cooking tools to make critted food.  However my tinker is an SM Cook, so I'm able to use the high level tools to crit food there.

Take your time when leveling....rushing is worst thing you can do in LOTRO. Take in the sights while you level. Moria for many (level 53ish) was a dissapointment so the longer it takes for you to get to that point the better. Also the end-game and pvp is not very well done so if your big into either you may want to look elsewhere.

I'd say hunter (dps/ports) or Rk (dps/healer) for a first class. Both do well in groups and have major bonuses if you solo alot.

    Hope you enjoy it!!

One suggestion I have is to do on-level quests... Try not to skip ahead too far.  Doing on-level quests should ensure you don't run out of quests to do.  Doing group quests or instances occasionally will also help.  Level 25-35 seems to be where most people have problems leveling... If you can get past 35, and have 4.5 gold you can get your horse and it helps a lot.

i assume the whole refer a friend get a free month of play thing is still going.  I was wondering if an account that has already gotten that referral once can get it again, or if id have to make a new account for that.

I don't have to get a referral but i think its nice to give a current player a free month in any game i start.  Assuming they still do it.

Yes, when you look on your account page you can invite up to 5 people at a time. So yes, you can keep getting it.
