I already downloaded the client from Fileplanet for the Open Beta, do I need to buy the boxed copy? In my mind I already have the game on my PC and will just need to get online and subscribe to the game's monthly fee to start playing correct? Or will it be a different set of a code so that once Open Beta closes today, this client will no longer work and I will need the boxed copy's version of the client?
The reason I ask is because I am considering a lifetime sub. I know a lot of people think it's not worth it but I tend to take forever to build up my characters in an MMO due to not having much time to play (grown adult, career man, married, etc.). So I can see myself playing this one for at least a year.
If they are advertising for the lifetime sub right now for $199 and have a $15/month sub, that is a little more than 13 paid months of gametime. Or you could even look at it like it's $199 - $49 (boxed copy) = $150. $150/$15/month = 10 months of gametime. So now you see why I am curious if I can get away without buying the game. I would feel better about the lifetime sub and it would be easier to swallow if I didn't have to buy the boxed copy and could play with the downloaded client I have. Easier to justify the purchase. Any help is appreciated.

Its like any other MMO...you still have to pay the 50 dollars...not sure I've ever heard of a MMO that lets you just sub at launch without buying the software first..WAR didn't do it...LotR didn't do it...EQ2 and WoW don't..so...yea Champs doesn't either.
Yes, you will still need to pay $50 for the key, however you wont need to install through the discs ..you can use your already installed client.
I , like others, do not suggest the lifetime membership. It's a lot of money for a game that hasnt proven it's long term worth yet. I know many of us remember COH release where everyone had such a great time for about 2 weeks and then (for reasons yet unclear) faded away from the game. I worry that champions may have the same problem of players sticking with it long term and leaving after a few months (This happens with all MMOs). I well know that there are some players who loved CoX and play it religiously still today. If you are someone who played CoH long term, then I would say you are likely to stick with champions long term. Everyone else, pay through shorter intervals.

Thanks everyone. I feel pretty stupid now, I should have realized the whole product key thing. I think the main reason I got off on this train of thought was because I downloaded the EVE Online trial and after my 14 days was over I was able to simply subscribe to the game for like $19.95 (included 1st month fee) and continually played from then on for the monthly sub without ever buying the boxed copy.
I did play CoX casually for over three years so I'm still heavily considering the lifetime sub. But as of lately I've been playing EVE and forget how CCP does things a bit differently than everyone else. I also caught EVE at the right time (right before Trinity release) and that may have been why I basically ended up paying $5 for my product key after you subtract the monthly fee from the $19.95. Another reason why EVE rocks!
Also my hopes are that Champions ends up adding a lot of content like CoX did with all of the issues. My main concern like most people's is the lack of class structure. The RMT doesn't really bother me as I think they have made it clear that items you can purchase can also be earned in-game and are more cosmetic items than anything earth-shattering. Sorry for getting off topic that last little bit. Thanks again for clarification.
One more question as I've never played a beta up to launch before. Will our beta toons carry over to launch or will we have to start over with new toons? I assume this is what people are talking about in regards to "headstart". So I am guessing the answer is no I can't carry them over to launch without a pre-order from GameStop or BB?
No you dont get to keep your beta chars...i think only one game ever did that and it really ticked people off. Head start means that while the game launches September 1st anyone who ordered from certain retailers gets to start several days beforehand.
thanks Banthis
