I think people who have taken up lifetime subscriptions are likely to be people who enjoyed CoX and are looking forward to more quality gameplay of a similar kind with CO. If one is a CoX fanboi (like I wss for 3 years), one has a certain faith and trust in the company that gave one so much fun. It's quite rational.
As for lifetime subs, i just dont see the value in saving a couple hundred bucks over the course of 3 years.
I was hoping to play the beta but work got in the way. These days its really hard to tell from posts on here if a game is worth trying or not. Still, we do find reviews that are unbiased from time to time. That said, I usually buy and try each game anyway, even if I'm broke ;p
Hmm, I think the limited number of Lifetime accounts is for there own financial protection. Say they sell 1000 lifetime subs, and 3 or 4 months in the game tanks. 1000 people are still playing but no new subs and all monthlies bailed for the newest shiny new game. Now what does Cryptic do? They sold 1000 people lifetime subs but can't support the game any more only 4 months in. Just a hypothetical scenario, food for thought.
Or the exact opposite. The game goes crazy and gets over a million accounts in its first year. In 3 years it over takes WoW in number of active accounts. Millions of people wished they had done that lifetime subs.
Just a hypothetical scenario, food for thought.
Edit That has just as much chance to happen as your scenario. Which is about .01%.
We also need to remember that this game has MT (Micro-transactions).
A customer with lifetime are often much more loyal and stay with a game. Such a customer is more willing to buy an expansion pack. And my guess is such a customer is more willing to pay for items in an item-shop, since...they are in it for life, so why not pay a bit more.
It is probably much easier to get MT cash out of people that don't pay 15$ per month. If I pay 15$ per month I am not inclined to pay more. But with a life-time, I don't think about the payment anymore, I don't have to put it in my budget anymore. This means I will be more tempted to pay a tad extra each month in MT.
I think life-time couple with MT changes things and how easy it is to make people part with their money. But I am only speculating, I can't know for sure of course. We will see, I guess
Edit: Did a quote of the wrong person, so I removed it. Sorry!

This is where the lifetime sub would be great. Say you get it and are bored of the game ??? You move on to the next MMO and get bored of that one ??? Well you can always go back to CO and play for free. I got the LoTRo lifetime and enjoy it alot. Helps fill the viod when waiting for new MMO's
Played Aoc/DDO/FFXI/WAR / LoTRo / CO / Aion Playing Rift
Waiting for FFXIV to be the game it should. so sad =(

Well, say I don't buy the lifetime and I get bored of the game after two months (30 bucks) then I move on and come back later and play for another two months (30 bucks). I still don't see the value ;p Anyway, its just me, obviously there is no reason not to have a lifetime and those who buy them will enjoy them.
Part of the reason for limited number of sub - specials was to limit the number of people that would be garaunteed beta access to STO. Why is everyone on the MMORPG forums so negative lately. It seems like everyone hates everything. OMG this game SUCKS anyone who plays it is a complete loser......blah blah blah. I remember joining these forums a few years back and really enjoying coming here for info on my prefered style of gaming....MMO's. Over the past few months maybe a year it seems like everyone here either has an agenda because THEY are playing the best game and all others suck , or because only THEY know what the best games are going to be and the rest of us are clueless. Can these people really be that angry at the world? Did someone cut off their meds? Why can't we come here and discuss intelligently the pros and cons of different games. Let's get these forums back to what they were intended to do. Help shape a community and hopefully have a small impact on what gaming companies think and consider when designing their next game. Flame away.
Lol, maybe you should have played some of these very pathetic stupid games that are full of deceptive lies, illegal marketing and only fool you for about 3 days before you realize what trash it is.. unfortunately, thats long enough for them to get away with all the cash

If that would happen they could always just put some cool stuff in the cash shop.
Such things are never unlimited, as odd as it seems that subs are "sold out". I don't assume many people will play the game that long to pay that off tbh, tho.

Congrats to Cryptic to proving all the naysayers wrong. They said hardly anyone would buy the lifetime, but they reached their goal. I'm looking forward to donning my tights again after CoX failed me on the AE.

What? Congrats to pissing of their customers and show everyone they are a shady company? Why congratulate them?
If WoW = The Beatles and WAR = Led Zeppelin Then LotrO = Pink Floyd
i dont know what all the pissing and moaning is about but if you havent bought the lifetime sub by now you certainly wont be within the next 7 days.
well there are over 50 of us on the fourms who wer planing to... I honestly have no idea where you would get the idea that no one else was planing to...

Not at all hypothetical, this is exactly what happened with Bill Roper's last game (Hellgate: London). They brought down the servers anyway. "LIfetime" refers to the life of the game, not of the player.

Some people were svaing up for the game, others wanted to try the game out before commiting to a lifetime sub (wanted to see if the game wold last for more then a year). Others got shut out due to CC processing on-line.
Many wanted to be sure that it wasn't going to be HELLGATE 2.
P.S.>> Many people do wait to the last minute before making a purchase. AKA -- Christmas Eve shoppers.
The major complaint has been that there was no notification of LIMITED QUANITIES only LIMITED TIME.
Note: One note in the forum from a MOD that got buried mentioned while supplies last.
I tried the beta the character customization was awsome but the game itself is not up my alley. I didn't find anything wrong with it it's just not for me. Good luck to those who continue to play, it gave me fun for a few days.

Do you get into the Star Trek Online beta with a life-time sub? If so, that might account for at least some of the numbers.
Yes, as did the limited 6-mo offer as well. I figure they just ran out of room for their future beta. Im sure they will reoffer the lifetime, just without some of the earlier perks. I bet you though, that most of the people complaining had no intention of even purchasing the lifetime. They just need a new platform to complain from for attention.
Cheers!

The life time and 6 month hav ebeen reinstated until the 31st of August due to great demand (and crying) so ..those who claim thats what they want and they didn't wanna play without it..need to now put up or shut up. Though I fully expect there to be many paranoid conspiracy theorist cry fowl too by morning. Those people can simply suck it.

You mean the people saying that it's because Atari is making sure their advertisements are exactly as they said because they're currently being sued over advertising and contractual agreements?

50 bucks buys you a life time sub to guild wars
why can't champions do this
Because Champions is a massively persistent game world... oh wait...
