Off to college; curious about a good laptop?

kinidokinido Member UncommonPosts: 429

So im heading off to Chicago for college in about a week; and ive been cruising the internet for a laptop that will be able to run aion overly well.

Ive asked a bunch of people and what not, and they are saying to go Alienware, which are all around the 1k price range which is what im able to afford.

Any other suggestions on maybe cheaper laptops with good preformance? the thing with alienware is the fact of, i think most of it is just paying for the name.

    Yikes!  Bad idea.

MMOGs do NOT mix with post-secondary education.

EQ almost cost me my University undergrad degree.

FX series gateway bro.. Thats what I play on... Granted I have it hooked up to a 25" monitor in the back of my semi... But by far the best bang for the buck...

for a 1000.00 you would get three times the computer of what you could get from alienware at the same price. Alienware and Dell your paying for the name.

But ya Gateway FX series for the win. I dont think you can still order from them directly might have to check out bestbuy or another one of their vendors.

Don't go alienware unless you like spending hours with their tech support. My first alienware laptop i got in 2003 the video card fan died in 2004, and sent them the comp several times and each time the fans failed again after a few months. They also sent me cards in the mail after i got sick of sending the entire comp to them and all the cards were used previously. Needless to say after a year i reported them to the BBB.

They replaced entire comp eventually then next laptops video card failed after a year and a half. This then got sent to them 4 times for repairs within a 5 month period. Each time the comp was out of my possession for 2 to 4 weeks. 4 weeks to replace a video card doesn't seem reasonable at all to me. So I reported them to BBB 2 more times during the time with that comp.

So now they have sent me a 3rd. Just get to wonder how long this one will last before the hardware fails, and am forced to deal with bad repair work. I warn against them unless you like long phone calls, and many trips to fed ex.

From what I've heard and seen, based on the answers you get here, try NewEgg and see about purchasing from them, they're rather nice and cheap, least seem to be, and I'm planning on buying parts for a PC rather another laptop.

My cousin is entering college too and wanted a gamer a gamer laptop to play Cod4. He wanted a laptop so he could take notes during class and work in the library. I lLOLed when I heard that. My and my roomate made the same mistake back then. He had an Alienware and I had a Dell. Laptop with 17" display are so freaking huge and heavy that its really a chore to move them around. And in class we looked silly because they were so damn loud and the battery would not even last until the bell rang.

As for the game you pay way too much for poor performance. Sure they will run current games okay but the hardware is so nerfed for battery life and heat that you will have to buy a new computer in less than 2 year to get decent fps in new games. Oh yeah and you can't play games on battery or it will last 30min.

So here is what I got on NEWEGG.com for my cousin. For exactly 1000$:

    Phenom II BE 4 core 3.0 Overclocked @ 3.2ghz

    4 gb ram

    ATI 4870 512mb

    19" display

    AND

    MSI Netbook

The desktop will play current games at full details and will be good for 3 years

The netbook have an excellent battery life, is very quiet and you can just put it in your backpack with your books and carry it everywhere without back pain. The desktop is microATX sized so you can put it in one of those reusable grocery bag if you want to bring it to your parents home on weekend, just buy a old CRT and cheap mouse/keyboard so you only have to carry the tower.

For extra battery life you can look for a netbook with a 6 cell battery instead. My asus netbook got 6h battery life this way with wireless disabled.

I also would stay away from Dell/Alienware.  Alienware by the way if you didn't know is owned by Dell!  They have shady business practices and bad customer service.  They ripped me off when I got a Dell with a promo saying no interest if you use their card for 1 year.  I got a first months bill, fine, no interest.  Second bill came in had interest.  I called them and they said I didn't qualify.  Come to find out this is a common scam they pull as I saw it as a news article on my local news station!
