I've no idea why, but this thread made me giggle like a schoolgirl.

    Cheers, OP!

    No.. must not believe.

They must be botting accounts to raise the ratings and visit counts! They must be brainwashing their beta players so they all make a wonderful word of mouth job of promoting the game, who would have thought a game could generate buzz on actual gameplay?

After all, it's just yet another F2P asian grinder with anime graphics and WoW clone gameplay (wait, did I just put "asian grinder" and "wow clone" in the same phrase to define a MMO?), and we all hate them, don't we? The graphics are horrible, the gameplay is dull, the character creator is the worst ever seen in fantasy MMOs, the quests are... KILL X!

    /obvious sarcasm

I think it will be a success. That terrifies me. It is the same thing as all the other EQ/WoW type games. It is upsetting.

    WTF? No subscription fee?

There are many of us who played and loved those games for many years. Some of us want to see that style pushed a little further and improved. Those of us still interested in those games are interested in Aion :)

Edit: I was wondering when someone was going to make light of the fact that it was the top voted and most popular like the OP did. Cheers indeed.

In other news "Party In The U.S.A." by Miley Cyrus is the top album of the week. Maybe you would enjoy that to.

I hear that's the top album on a website dedicated to a specific genre of music. Seems like your argument is a bit flawed. We never said Aion was the most popular game around, but the most popular MMORPG currently on the site. While Miley Cyrus may have more sales this week in overall music, she isn't considered rock, jazz, etc and isn't the top album of those genres.

It's not the same thing if you add wings. Gawsh where have you been =x

Haha, the MMORPG is truly a slowly evolving genre and even though it may contain much of the same skeleton of those games, it is hard to say its the same exact thing. It has its own unique lore, story, combat system etc. Its easy to generalize them into 1 category, but then we can safely do this with all other genres in saying Half Life 2 and Left 4 Dead are the same thing because I fire guns at things and they die. I think too many people take their generalizations a bit far sometimes. It'll push boundaries and continue to improve what WoW has so far done (which has done the same thing with EQ).

I'll end it saying no, I'm not a hue Aion or WoW fan, but there are just something you can't deny and there is no doubting Aion's impending success. It is echoing much of what WoW has done, yet alone improve upon the process (well I guess they had a year to polish the game on the other side of the world too) and focused on the quality of the game from multiple facets. And finally, its fresh (especially to us on the West side of the globe). I hope companies take lessons from this when developing future MMO's now its just a matter if they can keep their game fresh upon release and hold onto consumers' interests.

I played it for a while and don't see what the big deal is.

    Waiting for ToR beta.

The answer is simple...its all hype. AOC , WAR ..heck for all I know even Darkfall may have held those same honors.

AION is a SOLID game both in PVE and PvP...but that alone wont make it a success. It is still unclear what factors played a role in making EQ1 and WoW the dominant mega hits they were/are. No one can predict how Aion will do.

it appears to be hugely popular right now. Time will surely tell down the road. I pre-ordered it.

Played : WOW, LOTRO, COH/COV, EQ2, SWG, and WAR.
    Playing EVE Online and AOC.
    Wtg for SW:TOR and WOD

I understand what you mean, but if you're talking worldwide Aion has been out over 8 months and has well over 1 million subs.

mm i wish ,its the flavor of the month, like war waslike aoc was like lotr was.check wow is probably not that close in rating on any site like mmorpg (ok beckham site might have wow close to top spot lol)and check wow still top game top played ,you name it it probably have the title.mmosite  style site have one draw back its only good for the flavor of the month game (new or re-launched game)for existing long term game like wow, silkroad online etc its very hard to know how popular a game is and summer time make this situation even worst since gamer are off to the beach in summer and the only time you see them here is when their better half let them have free time to do whavever they like (gaming anyone lol)espacially when its raining

Its just the hype before the storm. Almost every game on the list went through this same cycle right before release (even DF) and you'll see it plummet once it goes live and people see how it really is. (because no game ever lives up to players expectations)

On the positive side, WOW is way down the list in top voted and popularlity, yet retains the most subs, so perhaps its a sign of success to drop downward.

First, its a joke. Are you Vulcan? Also, Aion isn't considered Sandbox, Sci-Fi, or F2P etc so I don't know why you're making the distinction. Popular only proves that its becoming mainstream just like Miley's music. There is nothing wrong with that, but it makes me giggle.

it seems the same at first. Then you hit lvl 25+, enter the abyss,  which bears no resemblance at all to the lower lvl game, and then the real game starts, - a pvp face rape free-for-all that bears more resemblance to Lineage2 than the above mentioned games. Its just that reason that I wonder if it will be a big success. I dont know if most people can handle the transition from a linear solo quest grind to free-roaming grouping pvp.

I was just making the point that the connection wasn't one that could be applied that well. You could have made a better parallel and I wouldn't have commented on it. Some jokes just aren't good. My point was that no ones saying Aion is the #1 game in the country or the world and you haven't really contributed to that point at all.

    I think the same.

The one thing a good AA title distinguishes from a bad one is the number of subs left after a couple of months. Initial sales/hype doesnt mean much in this genre.

Again, I'm not sure if we're ignoring the point that Aion was released over 8 months ago and has a strong number of subs. If we're just talking about US then we definitely don't know, but if we're talking about the game overall it's doing well with over 1 million subs.

should be number 1 as SWTOR is not even a MMO is a COOP-online RPG. nearly the same thing as guild wars.

  • MardyMardy Member Posts: 2,213

Time will tell.  No more hype for me, I think the genre is waaay hyped out after the past few disappointments.  So I'm glad it's voted top whatever whatever on mmorpg.com.  I'll see how the game plays out in a month or two after it's released.

Aion is an Asian import that has been waaaaaay overhyped. It may do decently, but it won't be a dominating MMO.

Not sure if you played the game since it focuses on non-instanced realm vs realm action while fighting the environment from levels 25+ in the Abyss. Last I checked you can't have realm vs realm with one person.

Lineage 1 did far better than 1 million subs in the east, but here in the States who besides me and about 5K other people ever played it?

I was only pointing out that hype means nothing, and the true measure of any game is whether or not I'll pay after the first month.

My son and i tried the beta and liked what we saw (sort of sucked they never started anyone off at level 25 so we could jump straight into the Abyss) and we'll be playing at launch.

Then I'll find out what the games really made of.
