I will puzzle over this for weeks.
I Generally enjoy solo play (Even though I am a social player)
My instinct tells me to go with Gadgeteer (Even though I hate the teddy bears, I love the munitions bots). So far at 9th level its working out okay. Of course, you can't really pick a "Bad" Build, just a different build in this game (IMHO).
However, that "Optimum" build is what I am seeking. That nice hybrid who can keep on playing and playing pve/pvp and is relentless.
Here are some general ideas I have had;
Supernatural by itself seems pretty close to Gadgeteer.
I've thought about some sort of hybrd Empath/Telepath, where I focus on EGO/CON/DEX and then get the beam weapon holds and use my ego-blade to melee.
What about you? What do you suggest?

Supernatural is very mediocre really. A melee END builder is just not very good, the chain skills are only great for juggling targets in PvP, or low power PvE, as they dont work reliably for bosses, have medium range, and wont work most of the time when needed.
Also, a big problem is that Supernatural doesnt really synergize with any stats that well.
Gadgeteer is slightly better. For PvP, a ranged END builder is basically required unless you find ways to get around endurance... and most of these ways are in powersets which have a ranged END builder anyways.
I heavily suggest looking into Armor as your primary skillset if you want to create a downright broken character, with Regeneration + Teleport for PvP brokenness. Wrist Bolter is a very decent END builder, it has decent spike, excellent defense, and synergizes reasonably well with several other power sets, among them gadgeteer (though not THAT great), plus you can create the most broken PvE solo chars with it.
The question, however, is : Do you really think you ll enjoy the game as a downright broken powerful character? It got old for me really quick.
I don't believe "Broken" is the right term. I am looking for a style/concept that fits my interests and is well playable. I doubt that power-armor is totally overpowered or I'd see more people playing it.
How do I know the 'damage' stat? For instance, with Telpathy I get that its Ego based. With swords an admixture of Dex and Str it seems, but with Dark Magic, is it Int?
Basicly build darn near any jack of all trades and you should be fine. Some might be harder than others but its not to bad.
Build a tank/ healer/ Caster and you will have a lot harder time. But if you have all 3 your gods.

Certain skills in certain powersets get buffs from specific stats, but the whole set isn't based on it. Whatever you chose as your two building stats, increase all damage with all skills.
Honestly playing through all of CB you really just need sets that can aoe for tremendous damage and keep you healed with high defense. a TP and regen in defensive stance will do fairly well because you DoT all day, just hold down block and spam your AoE DoTs and you'll down mobs in no time. Pick up a few extra heals from supernatural, AOEs from elemental sets, and so on...... when you hit tier 3 powers just pick up ego storm and put use the advantage where you summon a storm or what have you and you can continuously spam that all day in mobs while picking up the pieces with a couple other AoE DoTs or Elemental AOEs.
Thats for PvE. . as for PvP... just get a ranged build with a lot of high damage and crowd control and a fast flight power such as rocket boots and knock yourself out.
IMVPO a good solo build is Claws of martial arts or Ice or Power from the elementals.
Claws dishes out good single target dmg, you hack them one by one. I managed very well with Claws soloing, tho it was some time ago, may have been nerfed.
Ice and Power are quite strong, ice allows to freeze the mobs and power pushes them back, both helps good with defeating the enemy.
Be sure to have some good self-heal. My advise is take those Heal Bots from Gadgeteering, since they will always heal you when needed. IMO the heal bots are a must if you want to solo a lot.
Well, one of the complaints about the game is any set can really solo 1 - 40. So you can choose anything.
To be uber though, pick Invulnerability with Regen. To upgrade to l33t, pick up pyre for AOE. Then pretty much throw anything else in...it doesn't matter about the other stuff. Pick whatever DPS you want. I'm not sure if you can combine heal-bots with those first two but if you can, you will piss off every PVPer EVER!!! Devs might even ban you for that combo.
In regards to Invuln/Regen
You only get one passive slot though? How do you slot them both?
I thought I had a great build, so I went into pvp at 10th level = got owned. Could do no damage.
I re-thought, came back as a focused swordsman, at 10th level = got owned.
Ask some questions and found out what they had slotted was a force power, that puts up an 800 hp shield at low levels you do so little damage that it seems you can barely penetrate this thing.
So I came back for my third character as a lightning focused blaster with rocket boots and that shield. So far I can say it has made PVE good. I am about to get about 10th again and try the Heroes BG. Granted I know it auto-levels me to 20th and those others have extra powers and ranks I do not. However, I shouldn't see a difference.
During Closed and Open beta I played one character who was a straight, fist and foot, martial artist. I loved him. Did...OK in PVP. Did real well in PVE. NOW though, it is the weakest build of all my characters. Can hardly take on an equal level small mob alone.
Tried to solo Fight Club five levels higher then the mission. All but the master villians were grey. Still got whooped and gave up. The combat moved are great but it appears the power set is totally nerfed.
Unless they changed it, Invuln didn't take up a passive slot...so they would both work. If they did change it, it makes the power pointless to pick in that set. It works well PvP and PvE. During the final event...Took down 3 destroids and only died once in a AOE attack. Those little destroids missled attacks killed me multiple times. During PvP, I think I died only once. I did Energy/Force.
invuln has been a slotted passive for at least the whole open beta and the last two weeks of closed beta, i can't talk of any time before that because i wasn't in beta then, but i am pretty sure you can add some 2-5 months to that.
I really like Lightning for solo. The chain effect is nice for being sloppy in PVE. you can just sort of zap everyone 'nearby'.
What would you say has the highest damage output though of all the starting powers?
Scenario A:
You have three mobs of basic enemies.
Which initial power set will take it down fastest?
Scenario B:
You are facing the super villain
Which initial power set will take it down fastest?
I ask two distinct questions because I am guessing for A it's lightning or dual blades or something, while for B it's something else. I am thinking about a new character to answer B.
Mixing and matching seems the best option for soloing, and don't overlook the importance of stats.
When considering a solo build, my focus is always on maximum survivability with as strong a damage output as possible.
Ninja Build
Stats: Constitution and Strength.
Travel Power: Tunnelling (undetectable to enemies, but can't fly) or
Travel Power: Teleportation (undetectable to enemies, can fly but has 5 sec duration)
Energy Builder: Righteous Fists (Martial Arts)
First Ability: Thundering Kicks (Martial Arts) - +12% dodge chance for 5 sec after combo.
Second Ability: Smoke Bomb (Martial Arts). If you're getting overwhelmed, it's a threat wipe.
Third Ability: Invulnerability (Power Armour). Damage resistant buff that scales with STR/CON.
Fourth Ability: Force Shield (Force) for the energy return.
Fifth Ability: Ego Sprites (Telepathy) - PBAOE DoT.
Sixth Ability: Psionic Healing (Telepathy) - Charged Heal
You can use the AOE DoT to wipe out groups of weaker enemies while blocking and taking minimal damage, and can handle larger enemies with a direct assault with the threat wipe/self-heal as backup.
Playing: EVE, Final Fantasy 13, Uncharted 2, Need for Speed: Shift
i havent played yet but im def buying this game and according to what ive been reading anyone can indeed solo fine, but theres a mode setup where oyu can do a tank mode for thread and dps mode and possibly healer mode via stances and whatnot so when you do group up you can kill fancy boss type encounters and whatnot, which it is nice to see they didnt totally leave grouping out of the game.
That is a cool build. Good mixing and matching while still keeping a Ninja theme.
I made a hybrid as melee / supernatural
Put all poiints in regen and recovery .
I am lvl 11 PVE was peace of cake
1vs 1 duel I won 19 out of 20 fights ( 1 fight the freaking guy would just teleport and I would lose my lock on him)
PVP was ok less damage but more interupts
In beta I tried munitions and got to 28 and PVPd a bit too, only 1 death out of numerous matches... I found that having fully upgraded shotgun (level 3 and the energy on crits, I ignored the charge knockback) and an upgraded sonic devices (level 2 and AOE IIRC) combined with a full dex build (had over 30% crit rate) and having a upgraded regen was insanely overpowered,
Sonic device was hitting for 600+ with no crit combined with shotgun annoyance with repeated knockdown and the 30% crit on top of that made short work of anything. PVE was a joke with this build and the PVP I did left me laughing in my seat due to the seemingly broke power of the skills.
Used super speed too so any runners in the first PVP scenario couldn't get far. the main downside to the build was having lower HP compared to other builds that probably weren't focussed on one thing and that you couldn't really harm flight builds unless you slot a root from another branch of skills.
as melee powers go, what is best for PVP?
How is Ego blade or Single Blade?
Is Single Blade really just a little more damage to a single target, and dual blade lets me jump into a patch of enemies and AOE?
