hey guys. I was hoping you could give me some insight to this game. 1. is it skill based or level based? 2. is it heavily solo or group or balanced? 3. download, or retail?
It's City of Heroes 2 basically. If you want to know what the game feels like, play the CoX free trial and you'll get a good idea of what CO is like.
1. Level-based although it's not really class-based so that's a plus.
2. Very solo friendly, maybe too solo friendly TBH...
3. Both

I should probably add regarding number 1 that there are some features that are unique to CO that make it "better" than CoX in my opinion. Such as the ability to mix and match powers from different power sets (a big selling point in my estimation), and IMO the missions and storyline feel more coherent and the game is overall less grindy.

It is like a more action oriented, newer version of COH with a touch of Freedom Force. Very Fun!!
1. is it skill based or level based?
It is level based. At alternating levels you get to choose a power, next level pick a super stat, next level pick an advantage that enhances one of your powers in different ways, next level get another stat boost. You can also gain crafting skill levels.
2. is it heavily solo or group or balanced?
Up through yesterday you could solo most things. The last patch ratched up the enemy toughness while ratcheting down the defense powers. Now there are some missions that will need to be handled with at least 2-3 (maybe more) people.
3. download, or retail?
Retail at Gamestop, download at D2D, Gamestop, Steam, etc.
imagine Marvel Ultimate Alliance but you get to customize your hero and select powers...
Nice dude I was just about to say the same thing till I seen your reply. But yes this is like MUA in full 3d open world. I am playing MUA now and CO is kinda the same

Thanks! I had actually written the same thing in my preview when NDA came down but some people actually felt that was a dig on the game. It really isn't intended to be -- if you like MUA, then you'll probably like CO...if you didn't, then you likely won't.
Even the drops are similar to MUA. The only other added factor is crafting which appeared to be a shallow and possibly necessary tool to experience other content in game. blech.

You can do a lot solo, but are some things you have to go in a group.
