Yeah, it is quite funny but sad at the same time when someone presents the advantages of instancing and then ask me wondering what's good about it...
I am no huge fan of the instancing over all in AoC. But I assume they can allow more people in the their zones now than at launch, considering they have had more time to tweak the engine and graphics. Also less people are playing
Unfortunately most mmos these days are developed with bad server and instance concepts. There is a crying need for more innovation. However the problem is not limited to AoC. It is still water compared to Guild Wars or the upcoming Star Trek and possible SW ToR too.
I don't think instances are a problem at the present situation with AoC.
In order to change a game from instanced (which I find this thread used the term too loosely) and open world map, they might as well make a new game. Simply because the amount of work is just not worth it.
This type of decision is made when the game is being developed or even before it is developed, there are no magic wand that can change a game from zones to open map. MMORPG are not made by pixies and fairies, it is made by people through programming, and for people, funds is always one of the biggest problem.
That does not bother me. I do not understand how zoning can be a problem for anyone. It doesn't change the actual gameplay.
Age of Conan is a very well-made game. Almost all of Funcom's games are. The problem with this game is not anything about the game itself. It is the community. I simply cannot stand the children in there that only want to see tits. And I cannot stand any of them when they find out I am female. They lose it and they are...unpleasant. They are trying to be pleasant, I think. But they make me uncomfortable. And guilds are always trying to recruit me. I think they just want larger numbers. If I knew of a group of people I could play with and not be made uncomfortable, I think I might like this game. The gameplay and class design is certainly more creative and well done than other MMOs on the market today.
"Gamers will no longer buy the argument that every MMO requires a subscription fee to offset server and bandwidth costs. It's not true you know it, and they know it." Jeff Strain, co-founder of ArenaNet, 2007
Well the zoning isnt that bad, after tortage things open up a bit more. You cant just pop in and out of instances, you have to be near a rez square. The problem with how they do instances, is that its not all that great when the servers arnt jam packed with players.
I like the open world feel of course, but i dont like the vast expanses of filler landscape. An open world makes random encounters less likely, which would not be good with aoc's ffa style pvp.
You wouldnt want to play an epic pve, explorer type game with an instanced setup.

WTF? No subscription fee?
