Players can hardly make game rules...

Also sandbox is not about barriers. It is about options.

Are you genuinely stupid or are you just acting like one? EVE is a good example of a sandbox and in that game it's the corporations that dictate what you can and cannot do in areas they control, the alternative is getting blown to pieces.

    Maybe learn2read?

If your creative enough you could try 'crafting' things in Second Life.

Sandbox is actually about options inside barriers.  Without limiting factors, it will be a stupid boring game.

Sandbox simply give people enough options that they can comfortably settle and play the game in a way they are happy with, but there should always be certain amount of limits.  Finding the right balance between limitation and freedom is what being an ideal sandbox is all about, and it is next to impossible to have perfect balance, but not too hard to come close to it.

Yosh, time to repeat my FFXIV-macro:

It's a mix of sandbox and themepark (mostly themepark), you have more freedom than in your average WoWified MMO but still not as many choices as in true sandbox games. Emphasis on PvE, there'll be little to no PvP and casual grouping is the focus, however soloing is not impossible nor difficult if that's what you want.

Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".

ah yes, FFXIV is another one to look out for, although its not entirely sandbox, ( you'd still get like 50% of the usual MMO gameplay )

but FF mainly focusing on PVE enviroment, almost not PvP at all unless you went into the PvP Zone

and based on FFXI, community on FFXIV should be as good, FFXI held a good reputation on their community

    So What Now?

If you were refering to gameplay rules like rules of engagement or corporation codex and such, it can be accomplished in any game and has nothing to do with sandbox design.

Fallen Earth is probably the closest thing you'll find to your description.

As a note, "Sandbox" generally refers to games with non-linear and/or open-ended gameplay, that offer players the ability to alter the environment in which they play. The definition actually has nothing necessarily to do with PvP or PvE.

It is unfortunate, though, that most Sandbox games to date have been PvP-driven, just as most MMOs are. It's a self-defeating concept, PvP Sandbox games. You spend countless hours building something so the equivalent of a sociopathic kid with a book of matches (the product of the equivalent hours spent developing destructive skills) comes along and destroys it.

I want a game without those socially maladjusted folks.

There is a reason most sandboxes aren't PvE based.  Because PvE sandboxes tend to suck.  Everything that sandboxes excel at (ie community, economy, crafting, conflict) are all best delivered when PvP driven.  Without PvP, they become stagnate and boring.

Not all PvP is guns blazing destruction by the way.

    I have to disagree.

SWG (launch) was the best sandbox i've played and it was much more PvE than PvP.

The sandbox-type games that were PvP-based that i tried eventually degenerated into zergfests and gankings with the biggest swarm guild/alliance/whatever winning.

EVE is the exception, but EVE is different from anything else that it really should stand on its own.

SWG is only game i've tried that really succeeded at integrating fully functional and meaningful non-combat classes, which i think was the key to it being a great sandbox.

I don't care for Sci-Fi too much, Star Wars in particular, and I've read too much negative stuff about SWG already long ago having seen it's peak. So those factors are enough to keep me away.

Istaria is proving to be quite frustrating, as I seem to have bugged out the quest system on my first day. As such, I'm stuck on the tutorial island for several days now. So that probably won't go anywhere, which is sad, because the community seems pretty great.

Ryzom is interesting, but it's slow going as the learning curve there is very steep. I doubt I'm going to get a chance to see enough of the content that I was excited to see before the trial is up.

It's really starting to seem like I need to take a break from MMORPGs for a few years if I don't want to keep playing WoW.

Thanks again to everyone for their input. It's really helped me get to see the games I think would be the best fit for me.

If ya want any help with that I can get ya off the tutorial island quite easily, what server are you on?
