When we are talking about d&d the mind goes to the nice table game where 5-6 or more friends were playing and having fun with the books ruleset etc. By the time though they desided to convert d&d into the Mmo rpg world it is now clearit was a huge mistake NOT to design a well organised pvp system in the game if not from day 1 , at least after some period.
Let me explain.
Fact 1 &D is an rpg phenomenon with its ruleset and worlds stricktly designed for PVE team based coop adventures.
Fact 2: All classes and races feats skills bonus feats and whole character advancement design was madewith pve and team base party coop in mind.
Allthough:
Fact 1: That DOES NOT mean since we re talking about a Massive Online production that they shouldnt or couldnt change some things in feats strengths of various classes and feats etc so they could bring some sort of relative balance so ppl wouldnt complain nerf this nerf that.. Besides in the current form D&D online ISNT exaclty an accurate convertion of pen and paper anwy, many things exist in game right now that has nothing to do with the pen and paper ( extra progression of skills during the lvl etc).
Fact 2: I couldnt imagine something more addictive than a lets say huge world to explore like wow has for example ,for adventuring in the D&d setup . I never understood why the devs instead of making a huge open world for ppl to xplore, adventure and interact ,even fight if alligment is evil or they could give diferent races the right to attack other races if they wanted to(they choosed the way of suck instanced places/squares). Dont take me wrong i love d&d online instances , point is there is nothing more in the game.
Fact 3: If you observe the most succesfull mmorpg (wow) you can easilly understand whats its content. What they did in blizzard is this. They give the ppl the pve part like all games...but... After you do your pve then what.. They give you the right to use your well earned equipment to do something...Thats pvp competition..Arena ..Some not very addictive ppl to pvp in wow when they feel like they play some battlegrounds or wintergrasp (open world pvp event) if they fell like to.. Point is Bliz is giving you the right to do some pvp if u want to , and if u want you can only pve..The boring thing in D&d online is that despice how hard the mobs are ,and how nice instances are, after a certain point it become boring to only compete againt computer controlled mobs, they are mobs and ppl always want a bigger challenge and thats human opponent AI. So i dont understand why in DDO they wouldnt have made a similar arena and bg system for those who want to use their equiment and avatar to compete against other ppl. And since D&D online pve classes , theme, combat system, character proggresion is by far better than wow i can only imagine how stupid the devs are not to take these very simple steps.
All in all since few ppl playing now (hardcore pve fans)is all that left in the game the devs made the game free in order some ppl will come back. D&D online could be a major success and in pve terms is better than the best mmorpg ins ales (wow)..ALL they have to do is give the opportunity to ppl to implement rated pvp with ladders etc ..0not just like this ofc..It needs work and carefull and carefull design.. Point is that the developers proved they are lazy and they wanted fast profit without even designing a full exploravble world...
But it can be done. ( or it could be done..maybe its too late)...

Yeah DnD is mostly PvE but still there has been times when a party member has been killed by another party member. We did a Drow campaign underground and we were stealing from eachother getting into bar fights and like i said someone even got killed.
So from my point of view anything can happen in DnD, even PvP.
