Mature rated and geared towards a mature audience are two different things. Take EVE Online for example, it's a game geared towards an adult audience because it requires actual thinking and planning. It revolves around the community, politics and corporate ruthlessness and competition and a kick ass market. Something that an adult with an average IQ can understand and get into. Now you take Age of Conan, a game that's rated Mature, and you can see that it's actually geared at teenagers and young adults, who will get enticed with "omfg I just chopped that dude's head off... OMG LOOK AT THE BOOBIES!" In my opinion, a game geared towards adults will have a different stimulus than an M rated game. There could be blood, gore, sexual themes and criminal activity but the game has to be built from the ground up with an adult audience in mind with the theme, puzzles, strategy, planning, politics, etc. Just having blood, boobies and bad words is not going to cut it.
Yar, that's what I be talkin' bout.

I would take a mature game one with CONSEQUENCES, politics and such.
U gank someone, u get some loot, but also u become criminal hunter till u pay the fee/spend time in jail
u a lawfull good player, u receive benefits as some higher rewards, but u have a very strick conduct code.

Well, if the jail had a game play element to it, it would be an interesting idea.
Say, for example, a person commits a serious offense and gets caught, his character gets sent to jail for a few days. The jail is populated by other players, some guilty and some not. It would be like a zone which you can only leave once you serve your sentence or did some sort of a special deed.
Jail would have limited resources and would pretty much be like a jail as it is portrayed by the media: full of people who are waiting for you to drop the soap in the shower.
Basically what I'm trying to say is that if there is a game play element to jail, it would be a cool idea. If it's just going to be a room where you hang out for a few hours, that would be boring.

NO, i dont meant that. Make innocent ppl suffer punishement is far from a good gameplay.
i meant in a mature comunity (virtual or not) u net consequences by everything u do (good ones and bad ones), i used jail as a example (fail example if put in a game).
I belive a harsh envoirement produces a better comunity and a more rewarding gameplay, and by no means i mean grind for hours or who kills more, but by applying game mechanics that impose consequences to players choices.
Thanks for the attention

Very true, FFXI is that way. Very harsh PvE which promotes people to work together and become skilled since a character's raw stats can only go so far. It is one of the reason it have a generally much better community than most games where people just use, toss, and belittle their "teammates".
I think there is a misunderstanding about mature mmo's and what kind of audiences they attract though. Take WOW for instance. It seems to be a family friendly game, and yet I have met many immature and sexually inappropriate individuals playing.
People will be who they are in whatever circurmstances they find themselves, whether it is a mature oriented game or a family friendly oriented game.

Well WoW is rather a weird exception to the rule. WoW have been very popular, and people are curious. Some of the people that play WoW not because of what it is as a game, but what it is a popularity contest winner. If think about WoW like a top pop idol, alot of the things about WoW's community start to make sense. Some of the population are gamers who play WoW, while others joined WoW for reasons only based popularity or because their friends all play it. Including plenty of my friends who never played a mmorpg in their life before WoW, then joined when a few of them start playing.
It is like if everyone is talking about a game, but someone doesn't know about it, they might feel left out and will become interested in it. A portion of WoW population are those that joined for mainly social reasons. If it was also the first time they experienced a mmorpg, it also becomes even more interesting to them. This pretty much also lead to the current generation of mmo gamers that are born and raised on WoW, but have no real idea about how to interact in a online game. Of course this is only speaking for a portion of WoW players, there are plenty mature players in WoW also.
I suppose WoW can considered to be a game that can be called as having hit that "critical mass" where it becomes a pop culture landmark to those who are curious about mmorpg. Of course when having that big of a population, there are more chances of meeting someone that are immature is also one aspect of WoW community.
(I might get flamed for talking about WoW so much, but I think I have been pretty fair in my opinions.)

Almost doesn't matter what MMO type you go to anymore, they are chalked full of immature players. Even the blood, gore, and nudity filled Age of Conan has an idiotic community on most servers. Especially PvP servers (As with any game with PvP).
Only exception is EVE Online and that's due (IMO) to a high learning curve and long character progression. It still has some morons, but nowhere near what most other PvP based games have.
I don't think I'd mind an "adult background" to a game, but I think it'd work better in a single player RPG than an MMO. Reason being the people who are drawn to it for the wrong reasons. Personally, I don't care much for censorship on the word level, and on that respect won't mind a game where people use "naughty" words. Then again, as someone mentioned, the draw of a true adult game is complexity -- something that appeals to intelligence and also emotionally. This can be achieved with or without drug references, and I won't mind if it's achieved with them, I just don't think that having them is necessary, so it won't be what draws me in. I don't think that family friendly equals shallow.
The short of it is, having "mature" themes specifically mentioned in the game is more likely to turn me off, because I'll think it means a game for immature people. Otherwise I won't mind them there. In terms of what I'd like to see, a good story is more important to me than the themes, and I believe that adult themes aren't necessary to make a story good.

I think that it could be a lot of fun, especially if there was a sizeable population in jail. If the sentences were relatively short, maybe a day or two, people could either have fun trying to escape, etc. or if they really hate that, they just don't log on for the length of the sentence and they learn a lesson that if they don't like the time, don't do the crime.
Was I the only person who was angry that you couldn't decapitate children and fly a kite made out of their skin and bones in front of the schoolmaster in Fable? I mean if you were going to be evil, why was the line drawn with a lot of things? You could be SUPERGOOD, but only "Lawful Evil" at worst.
Ratings do bad things to good product. Ever watch the movie "Spawn"? A kid-friendly version of what was in the comics, reduced to strong language such as "You filthy little piece of vermin. What makes you think I would join your army? You can take that army of yours and shove it." Yar... damned hellspawn using "G" language. Far cry from what HBO showed with the animated series, or hell even the comics.
I don't think my growth has been stunted because I can't explore this in a MMORPG... though being evil, backstabbing, and plotting was damned fun with pencil/paper D&D. Made for some fun stories.
"There is only one thing of which I am certain, and that's nothing is certain."
Wow I am shocked thought more would like family friendly to be able to teach their kids how to get into MMORPG's . I remember teaching my son how to figure things out , but would like to see more geared toward family without the blood and guts you see now days:) Very good poll I see a lot of responses TY
I don't think you need to teach kids how to do anything, they'll find it on their own. My oldest daughter found my old copy of TF2 and installed it on her system and is off playing with her friends. Nobody had to show her. My youngest has all kinds of freebie games that she plays (without ever using the item shop) and nobody had to teach her how. If either of them ever showed any interest in an MMO, I'd get them a sub. So far, neither are remotely interested. Only time will tell.
More adult-themed games would be interesting to see, and they are a decent idea - in theory, but the communities of players that those kind of games draw in is just unbelievable. I went with 'family friendly' for the fact that when played Age of Conan, I had met some of the most immature players that I have ever encountered in an online game before. When I first started playing AoC, it felt like I stepped into some corner of the Internet where all the Trolls hung around when they had no forums to go to.
I am not sure that I understand why there seemed to be so many immature players there compared to the family friendly games that I'm used to.
For me a more mature oriented game would be more enjoyable. But I also prefer tougher leveling and death penalties so I'm not the standard MMO player at all now a days.
At least with a higher maturity rating you would hope to see less of the annoying 13 year olds that do nothing but spam chat and do lame chuck norris jokes all day. The same ones that constantly beg chat for items and all that annoying crap. However I think most parents now a days are bad at being parents and would all buy their kids the game anyways.
For me I really just want a challenging game and a good community. That combination doesn't really exist anymore as everyone is selfish and is their to grief for the most part.
Well I think the OP focused too much on "adult" things like sex violence and drugs. A mature game IMHO have to be designed in a way that the 13 year old stay away, maybe no violence at all or only in 19th century style duels. A mature game could at least theoretically be a story driven Victorian age game with investigations, a game that includes important social elements as being able to really dance in a game, something like Vanguards diplomacy system instead of PvP, maybe gain status instead of levels. Social status as a results of actions in game so when you descend on the path of crime and evil you will be barred from entering certain areas and the other way around.
A setting that not stays away from "real evil" so if you are evil you have to abduct lots of children to build you criminal pick pocketing empire as per Dickens Oliver Twist but still does not allow you to run a brothel. A Mature game has to be challenging for adults with style, interaction and much more things to do than just killing things. Unfortunately I do not think that a game like this will ever be made as it would be to complicated and the level of immersion/RP would be to much for most people.

Lets face it. Mature has tons more to do with the people you play with, than the game envrionment. It doesn't matter what the devs provide.
That being said I support a game that promotes and attracts a more mature gameplayer.

I want something in between, so I voted "other".
Basically, not just anything goes. But I don't want total wimpage either.
Once upon a time....
I voted other because I'd like to see both.
I can play the family one with the family and after they go to bed I can log into the rated M one.
Then I can enjoy the best of both worlds.
