I'd also say this game is waaay better than at launch. I too would say that tortage is less exciting than the rest of the game. PvP wise the scenarios are huge fun. I wouldn't call this the best pvp game especially with Aion around the corner but it's not horrible. I have hopes they'll get rid of the layoring of the zones(not so good if you have a guild war going on) but right now the focus of the game is on it's pve. The new expansion seems really fun. Just make sure your comp can handle the game. I think that's half the reason this game gets so much guff. People just don't have the rigs to handle it. And above all join a good guild. The game. The game is a moving piece of art. Take the game as it is and you should like it.
I played this game at launch up to the max level with a demonologist. I quit because the game was horribly lacking at that point. They recently offered me a free comeback week. I thought it might have improved, but I still found it to be a horribly boring game at the max lvl. I couldn't even find a PvP scenario after hours of waiting in line (It doesn't take very many people to play one). Overall I would avoid this one.
Yeah, I couldn't resist making an account on here to reply to this thread.
I too was there at the launch of this game and yes, it was a horrible launch. It was the kind of launch that a game company wants to avoid...but funcom evidently had pressure to not push it back and fix things. I left the game not even two months after launch because all the negative aspects and only just came back a few months ago to try it out again.
This game IS a good game. Yes, there are still problems with it here and there...but it is far from a POS game like a lot of people are saying. Judging the entirety of an MMO just on launch when the game has been out for over a year and a half now is not a proper thing to do.
The game has outstanding graphics. There has been a time or two when I got so lost in looking out into the horizen that I nearly died because I wasn't paying attention to my character. If you have a superior computer, you will be in for a treat...the scenery is breathtaking in DX10 with high graphical settings. I , unfortunately don't have a great computer...so DX9 and low graphical settings for me...but surprisingly, the game is still VERY lush and beautiful.
Combat is where this game is significantly different from every other game...well, melee combat is. There is a combo system where you have to hit off the right directional attacks after triggering the starter to be able to deal high damage. Casters, at the moment, are just your generic range nuke and crowd control. Healers deal significant damage and heal by way of healing over time and, to a lesser degree, procs.
Funcom is currently in the process of a once over for each class before they release the new expansion. They're reworking the way some spells/combos work, removing some, adding others and improving the feat trees for each. So far, it is job well done as the changes have been great.
The expansion that is coming out(rumored to be in christmas 09/early 10) will take place khitai, which is taking on the Robert E. Howard view of early china/korea. The zones are said to be nearly seamless and extremely large. They will be adding at least two new mounts that will need to be earned and time invested to rear them from cubs into combat pets and finally making them into mounts(if you wish to). They are also going to add in an alternative advancement system where you spend points earned to train up new skills. Not much is yet known about that though.
I would definitely suggest at least giving this game a try. Don't listen to the naysayers who claim this game to be a bugfest...yes, there are still bugs here and there...but they are few and far between...and what game doesn't have this problem? If you do try it out, just know that almost every class doesn't begin to really develop until levels 25-30.
The game is certainly a lot better now. It's very fun and the combat is much more intense now that armor and things actually make a difference. I would most certainly recommend the game. I personally couldn't play it cause I really needed a friend to play with, and none had any time to spare. That's how it is with me in MMOs nowadays.
I only played the trail a few months ago, but there was alot in this game that i loved. The melee combat was a refreshing change and the voice acting made the quests seem less boring and more like i was acctually doing something important. I can say that i've read about the early problems people have had with the game but i honestly didn't have any problems with that myself. I know some people complained about a lack of high level content but it seems they have added a lot to it since release, not to mention they are working on that new expansion. The only problem i had with the game was the lack of players once i left tortage, it just seemed empty. If more people gave this game a second chance, im sure it would be worth playing!
I only played the trail a few months ago...... I know some people complained about a lack of high level content but it seems they have added a lot to it since release........
How would you know about the high-level content if you only played the "trial" a few months ago?
There was a time when I would have argued the point in favour of AOC, but now I have to say I think the game is breathing it's last. Game over, thank you for playing.

Apprently he/she can accomplish a simple task like asking somebody or reading the patch releases. Not like if you don't play the game, there is absolutely no way you can know about how the game is progressing.
This MMO is no different than any other in that if you play long enough, you WILL run out of new content. FC could add 5 new instances a quarter and there would still be people saying there isn't enough new content...
I won a copy of AOC on this site last July so I can't comment on how the game was at launch. It now seems like a very solid game. I didn't notice a big change after leaving Tortage except the lack of spoken dialogue for every quest that wasn't really missed. One thing not mentioned yet is the engine used is quite impressive. Yes there are zones but once in an area there is a lot of detail and variety. You feel like you are in a place. There is collision detection so you can't run through mobs or rocks. There is a climbing skill so you can get to unique areas and where you can also fall to your death. Also most fights are againest at least two or three mobs which makes things more exciting. I have always hated not being able to use aoe skills in games because you always had to fight things one at a time to survive. Not in this game. I cannot say how long I want to keep playing but it seems to have plenty to do for a couple more months.
I played this game and honastly i can tell you even though i was excited for it and waited sense they announced it i can't say that i enjoyed it. And believe me I wanted to. I played it for 3 months after the release and i just couldn't get into it. When they offered trial i started again and they did make alot of changes but still didn't enjoy it too much. But that is just me. I can't point my finger at a single thing that made me not ennjoy it but its something it just didn't grab me like some games out there did.
I would not say AOC is the best game out there, but I think it is worth trying. I have tried many games and I am curious what these other great games are?
My two cents as a closed beta tester, launch player and welcome back weekend player... AoC is awesome at what it is.
I personally never understood the whole 1-20 great, 20+ meh crowd. 1-20 plays like a bad RPG on rails but with side quests to fill in the main plot and you're stuck on a little island. 20+ is monsterous big, varied and wide open. At launch AoC required a monster to run on high, today it does not. My fairly normal MMO rig pushes AoC at 80+ fps on high at 1920x1200. LotRO is about the only other MMO that does that on my rig, AoC is obviously better graphically
Gameplay wise I love the active combat, the default male stance is a lot over the top in my opinion but thankfully they "fixed" the female stance so you can chose. The world is great, the content is great, the combat is great, the classes are unique, could use more variety MOB wise, PvP and crafting wise I have no idea or interest. Given the cost of a retail box, its a win win.
If it weren't for my great guild in EQ2, AoC would be my fanstasy MMO. Luckily I can get my action fix from CO which just dethroned CoX's long run as my go-to MMO :O
Any issues this game still have is not something a casual player would see for 1-3 months of playing. Also there is not consensus that the game is lacking endgame anymore. There is a new expansion coming out with much (!!) more content and they keep updating with new instances and raids.
There is every reason to play this mmo. I consider it the best released since SWG, despite AoC is not sandbox.
OK, I finally managed to download the game (it took me the whole night, sadly I couldn't do it on Friday as we were partying till late and on Saturday we got on our bike and spent the day out, which is also fun, but I really wanted to get started with installing AoC... gosh, it is hard to play computer games when your girl is not into it.).
I also got a trial key at fileplanet (the link is in one of the posts above). The game is installing now, I will tell you guys how I like it. I can only play an hour a day as work, my girl and EvE will take the rest of my time. I will be parking WoW while I try AoC, and hopefully AoC will replace it in my HD. As mentioned before I like the lore, so I'm predisposed to like AoC. On the other hand I have little tolerance for bugs and if my suspension of disbelief is broken because of that I will hate it.
Anyway, I will start playing tomorrow. Any pointers as to which server, class, etc should I try first? Someone mentioned Crom as the most populated PvE EU server, but I have no clue as to which class should a first time AoC player should try first.
Its not the words Mokwee, its that the post insults people he doesn't know because they like a game. Also I am still waiting for what you consider to be a worthwhile game.

That depends what you like to play, rogue, tank, mage, healer the most. Any can solo well and any can also be essential to a group. I would say the unique class is the HoX which is a mage that uses a 2h sword. It is a lot of fun!
Play what class you usually find the most fun. The exception maybe is the HoX. EU side I can't tell you which server is the best. Turn the speakers up the music is awesome.
Make sure you put points into climbing, you'll need it even early on in Tortage climbing up the volcano. The rest just explore and have fun. Expect to die a lot till you know how many mobs you can take and learn the combat system.

Well, that hello kitty MMO comes out soon. I 'd wager that's the one he is really looking forward to.

Save your money. There are plenty other MMO's coming out soon that are so much better and wont actually put blatant lie's on their game box.

There are still many other games out there + ones due out soon that are soooo much more deserving of your support.
How about we just play a game because we find it fun? Crimey...shakes head....
