Will Abyss PvP in Aion be like RvR in WAR?

BoardwalkerBoardwalker Member UncommonPosts: 388

One of the main things I found lacking in WAR's pvp/rvr was a sense of ownership for the land over which we were fighting. In DAoC there were 3 realms, and each realm "owned" a part of the "frontier" (or "abyss" in Aion-speak). When their land within the frontier was invaded, the defending realm often took that invasion personally, and was passionate in its defense. In WAR, I rarely felt that this was the case.

Beyond rifting (which I like), I wonder if there will be any sense of ownership over areas in Aion's abyss zone, or will the need to pvp stem soley from the desire for APs and control over dungeons? Having never been to the abyss, I don't know. For me, those two reasons coupled with once again having a clearly-defined "frontier" zone will be enough reason for me to pvp as much as possible, but I think that sense of "ownership" would be icing on the cake.

They can adjust a game all day, but they can't help the issue between the keyboard and the chair.

/agree, the "ownership" thing made DAoC for me.  I loved it when we where on a raid in PvE and the /as would lite up, INVASION at xxxxx.  You had to decide, continue or leave and head to the frontier to protect your realm..great stuff, battles that went on for entire weekends or even weeks.  I can only hope Aion has that.

When I said i had "time", i meant virtual time, i got no RL "time" for you.

I believe there is definitely an aspect of ownership, holding a keep doesn't just give you access to PvE benefits and vendor bonuses, it also generates a tax for your legion. There are more bonuses involved I think, but I'd have to reference a post to list them.

Don't get me wrong, as I never played DaoC, but it seems to me that this would be more of a community thing, rather than solely focused on game mechanics.

I know that I felt there was no real reason to defend keeps in WAR because it was generally more "effective" to go PvE at another fort, avoiding all confrontations with actual players, not to mention that the rest of the people on my faction seemed to be allergic to defense. I think this was due in part to the game mechanics that were set in place (and also problems with game stability - but that's another issue), but also due to the fact that the community as a whole wanted quick results: quick gear, quick renown experience, etc. Everything needs to be instantanious.

I would LOVE to have what you guys described: a sense of ownership, and therefore a real reason to defend (and attack, for that matter). However, I think this will only happen if the community as a whole develops that mindset, rather than the "efficient AP / hour" mindset. Unfortunately (and yes, I'm a total MMO pessimist), I believe Aion will go the WAR route as far as community goes and we wont see this sense of ownership that you DaoC vets may have seen in the past.

Hopefully this came out the way I wanted it to - I'm certainly not trying to bash anyone, just giving my views on the subject.

     @OP

You know those logo's (order/destro) ones that represent which land you own?  yeah those... "ownership" because people were too busy trying to be renown point whores , (thus leaving the land which you just claimed ownership to ) lol so much for defense,

although, when we actually did stay to setup defense to trick some bastards, the entertainment you get from suprise of the attack is worth the wait.

Give us more rewards for DEFENSE GDI, thanks.

I think the design of the Abyss is more likely to create the kind of atmosphere the OP is looking for than the design in WAR. However, it will still depend a lot on the in game community.

each side owns part of the abyss... i hope people realize this... there are designated areas that are specific "safe zones" within the abyss, and staging areas for each side. opposite faction players that enter these areas and kill players receive slayer points that cause them to build up penalties the more they do it. this is to prevent either side from camping staging areas. there will definitely be a sense of ownership in the abyss... dont worry about that.

I like that idea.  If someone owns the keep the other faction pays money.

There are artifacts around each fortress,  Each artifact will do damage, buff, transform, and so on and its AOE wide.  So if you own a fortress its most likely you own all the artifacts around it also.

If you start seeing the other faction start to take a few of these artifacts around your fortress you know they are going to target your fortress for take over.  That is the time to rally the troops and defend your fortress.

But on the other hand your legion may want to give up the fortress because you have gotten stronger and want to take over a better fortress.

No legion will be able to hold all the fortress's. The legion master must deside when it is best to go for the better fortress and in turn get better rewards.

Owning the fortress give good advantage in Aion, but alot of Korean player find defending them is not worth as much as taking over one.

However, that might change in 1.5 with the addition of specific dungeons and benefits from holding a fortress.  Main idea is that it is not like in WAR, but I am not sure if it is on par with DAoC since Aion is not launched yet in 1.5.
