pre select lets you create your character in advance so you can reserve character names and guild names you get into pre select if you pre-order the game.
Basically. Pre-select takes place two days before the head start opens up, so players with pre-select and head start will be able to reserve names on servers on the 18th. You might also be able to design your character as part of the process, but that hasn't been confirmed that I know of (though it would make the most sense).
If you pre-ordered the game and have a pre-order code, it's one of the benefits.
