    Copied from Aion's site:

    Open Beta starts 9 a.m. PDT (5 p.m. BST, 6 p.m. CEST) on Sunday, September 6th.

    Edit: By 2 seconds?  What the hell, I never win ;_;

    1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

    2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

    3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

  • Sorry, Wickedjelly. You can win next time, I promise.

Where do you get a beta key?  Or do you just need an NC account to play?

This is BS, how can they call it an open beta if it is not open.  The hell with this, I downloaded the 9 gigs assuming it will actually be an "open" beta.  NCSoft is screwing the pooch on this one.  Even if it is the best game in the world im not buying it now.

    It is an open beta...

Closed beta is a beta that is available only to a select few of invited people.

An open beta is a beta that is open to a larger group of people, in this case, it is the group of people that pre-ordered it.

"Open Beta" doesn't necessarily mean absolutely everybody.

If you are not going to purchase a game "even if it is the best game in the world" just because you misunderstood a definition, you, sir, are an idiot.

I know that I wouldn't give up the best game in the world for anything that trivial...

Closed Beta = NDA in effect, you cant discuss or share your game experiences with others

Open Beta = NDA lifted, you can freely discuss or share your game experience with others.

Neither guarantees you a spot in beta and Open doesnt mean everyone come on in.

so, you are not buying it... and what will that do to rest of people who are playing the game?   Nothing I guess ^_^

One less nub to kill, I'm so sick of people confusing free trial with open beta.

Yeah this is a joke with the open beta. Most people (including me) assume that "closed beta" means "a beta for a certain limited amount of people" and "open beta" means "a beta everyone can participate in".

Not to mention that on the Aion homepage, they write on several places "get the client here! download the open beta client now! play the open beta!", and even in the long description about the open beta is the key/serial number thing not mentioned a single time.

I mean, seriously: if you do something like a beta for a large amount of people, and explain people what's it about and how it works, then every sane person would include somewhere "you need a key though, that you can get this and that way". If they don't do it, then they don't mention (or even hide) it on purpose. Why? Good question. Maybe fileplanet paid them to do so, so that people think "I already downloaded more than 10gigs of stuff and can't play it. Oh well, then I just pay the few bucks to fileplanet, else it was all for nothing".

That's a really cheap way to trick people into stuff, and in my opinion not a good start to build up some trust between the developers/company and the community.

Let's play Fallen Earth (blind, 300 episodes)

Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)

It's a closed beta that they're calling an open beta just to get more people to sign up. It's a marketing ploy, and it worked on me :(

Lol. Is that the only reason your not going to buy the game? Seriously? Really...*pokes guy next to him* "hes not serious right?" That has to be the stupidest reason for not buying a game ever. I could understand if they've had misunderstandings in the past or if NCsoft just sucked balls all together But NCsoft makes good MMO's and you just don't understand what an Open Beta is. Open beta is not a Everybody Can Play Beta. It's an expanded open beta with fewer restrictions. But it still has the word beta in it so that means things are being tested. Imagine if your work for the Aion team and your trying to fix a quest while the entire world is playing your game. It can get frustrating. You cant blame NCsoft and the Aion team for wanting to put out a good game. Thats like blaming God for making the earth.

MMO's are the ark of the gaming world. Let it take us in new directions.

Doesn't it seem a bit fishy that open beta is a requirement based beta(pre-purchase, membership in a pay service, etc.)?

It's common knowledge that people who have a stake in something will be more pro-active in protecting it. While the sum to be in beta may seem trivial, it may have a similar effect. (many marketing schemes require a very small initial investment, then go for the throat later.)

I envision that, while the game may indeed be a great game, people are selling themselves along with others on how great the game is.

I think  they may fear a true open beta in which non-vested people can form opinions on their own.

The inverse is that when people don't sacrifice something to get into a beta, they do a piss poor job of actually testing the game. They regard it as little more than a free trial and don't really contribute anything.

That's a terrible explanation. The Closed/Open NDA makes at least some sense, although I still disagree with it. Open beta has always been open to the public, and that's why it's called open beta. There's been this recent trend of Fileplanet "open" beta's (I know Fallen Earth was, Champions might have been as well, but I was already in closed for that so I dunno). I hope nobody is stupid enough to pay for that. Even if you have money to throw around, by showing Fileplanet that this method actually works you're just encouraging them to keep doing it.

Pre-orders are different, nothing wrong with that. I hope the majority of the people in the open-beta are pre-orderers, not people paying for this ridiculous fileplanet subscription.

Hopefully, they'll be free in a day or so.

Also, including any variation of "you, sir, are an idiot" (IE, "You lose good sir", "You, good sir, are an idiot") is not very impressive. I call it 18th century french duelist syndrom.

What's really frustrating is that people always say that OBs were completely Open. OBs ussually are open to EVERYONE after the first few days. They paying customer is what these companies wish to serve. So they let them have a headstart. Then after the next few days the pull in more sites to just spread the OB keys. This is most likely to occur with Aion. No guarentee, but that is always a chance. Every OB I've been in has been that way. People just need to chill. That is my two cents.
