I played 64 mmorpgs, but the easiest download is Breeze online,( which makes 65, oops), graphics are ok. Kind of stupid. Ya, but you have your whole life to try something new.
Ultima Online just had its 7th year anniversary and still going strong, mind you its not the game it used to be but my favorite regardless. The 7th anniversary pack comes with all expansion packs and Ultima 9, but EQ also just released a platinum or some kind of pack that has almost all the most recent expansions. I myself didnt like EQ that much but i think its your best bet for 3D MMORPGs or DAoC which is alright. Id say UO 1st, EQ 2nd, DAoC 3rd. Mind you though, having friends who play the same game is a big big plus.
All I can tell you from my experience, is don't play everquest. It really lacks character depth, at high levels all character classes are identical (save possibly their appearence). Even with their alternate advancement system your mage will be the same as every other mage running around the world. Plus they like to steal for their customers by putting out expansion after expansion with very little new content in each one. Unless you want to sit and camp at mobs day after day, and join in with the other millions of people with the same characters, i'd look elsewhere.
I'd actually reccomend a non massively multiplayer RPG, Neverwinter Nights, it has great character depth and as well as a great online community, oh and there is no monthly fee.
If you are looking for a relatively easy game to pick up on with a great community you should try The Realm Online. I have played there for 8 years now, it was the first of its kind. The community is quite amazing, many still play from the beginning, others have left only to come back.
What I love: 1) 2D graphics that are easy on the eyes. I like to use games to relax, not to get a headache trying to figure out what I am doing or where I am. 2) Easy social interaction via public gossip channels that are moderated. An additional 995 user customizable channels for guilds and other purposes. 3) Turn based combat that allows you to set a timer and not blindly point and click with fury. 4) Easy character appearance with lots of options so I can look like me and not 100 other people. 5) Set up to ease the learning curve for new players. Everyone starts on channel 4 which is game help, usually there is a Mentor there who's sole purpose is to field game related questions. Even when one isn't there, many experienced players reside there and are very eager to help. 6) Community events and games for downtime inbetween hunting/leveling.
I could go on forever, it's been like a home away from home for me. If you decide to check it out you can send me an ingame magic mail, I go by LadyofDarkness there. Or you can e-mail me.

Lots of luck finding yourself a home either way!
