lol, I wish this was sarcastic.... So because they are actually going for realism its a stupid decision. Some people actually enjoy it and it ends up hightening the experience because your not a doll in a game, you can place yourself in the game. If 3rd person is your thing fine, your missing out on a bunch of good games that use your so called dumb decisions.
So lets compare realism with this game:
Realism lets you turn your head while not turning your body, nope not in this game
Realism lets you have good positional surround sound to warn you of approaching danger, nope not in this game
Realism lets you dive out of the way of an attack, roll and recover for a counter, nope not in this game
Realism kills you when you jump off a 60 foot cliff, nope not in this game
Realism lets you have approx a 170 degree field of view and the ability to rapidly detect changes in your peripheral view, nope not in this game.
I can go on for ages but the point is don't throw down the realism card unless you really mean it, you know like one shot kills, permadeath, no magic, no flying mounts, etc.
First person view only will be death to any game. This is not 1999 anymore and most people don't find it conducive to good gameplay.
I vote yes for first person, its one thing that I really like about playing Darkfall. People don't get to see the whole area surrounding them (though you can go out of first person in DF, I wish it were locked!)
yeah i know but i would wait to release the screen shots myself, or at least something that looks better than what they have released. I myself depend on screen shots and videos on whether im hyped up for the game enough to give it a chance and with so many other good looking games coming out like SWTOR and APB, it puts MO on the bottom of the totem pole
APB and SWTOR wont be out till late next year at the earliest, MO will release before than so like I said wait till release I don't look at the picture itself I look at what possibilities are there.
Well APB is slated for Q1 2010 and MO is supposed to be at the end of the year but I just figured that being this close to launch it would be more polished. I guess time will tell though

He said "going for realism". Not that they managed to capture it perfectly.

Even if they are going for realism its still a game, you want to be able to turn your head without turning your body, in a game that is more of a hassle for the player than anything unless the game is actually Virtual Reality. You would have 2 different turn buttons.
How do you know what type of sound they are going to release with, a good surround sound system would easily fix this if they support 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound when it releases which most games released today support surround sound.
lol, you jump off a 60 foot cliff in the game you do die. I dont know where the hell you saw someone not die in game when that happened. Only thing I can think of is you can't judge how far you have actually fallen.

Yep a hassle to be sure so offer 3rd person and voila problem solved in one simple move. BTW notice how even the ancient EQ has gone to an improved 3rd person interface (ala WoW BTW) to try to keep it's dwindling population and get some people back.
Like I said, it is not 1999 anymore and people have moved on. If SV wants to stick in the past then they are welcome to the same mistakes as DorkFail and other games that refused to change, most of which are now bankrupt and shutdown.
Actually much higher and took no damage at all, so nope I didn't misjudge the height or there are some serious bugs related to actual height and falling time.
Tell you what jump off the city walls in game they are at least 30' high then go jump off the roof of a 3 story building in RL and compare the damage

I really don't understand why you have to bitch about the game when you don't need to play it only thing I can think of is your pissed that the game isn't going to be in 3rd person, 1st person is more realistic than 3rd person. 3rd person makes your character seem like a doll, 1st person puts you inside your character.
Why do you really even need to be able to rotate your head and not your body even in 3rd person games I have never needed to if I want to look to my right or left I just strafe and face to the right so im still running the way I want but im looking a totally different way.
The 1st person view they have brought to the game isn't an old 1st person view its incorporates actual hand animations for almost everything from what I have noticed. Swimming you see your characters arms come around and do the butterfly. Using a spell it shows your hands with the spell animation, if you wanted to compare 1st person views compare it to Oblivion or Mirror's Edge more than EQ because EQ wasn't really a realism view it was just they way they designed it. Even if EQ is going to the 3rd person view you seem to not grasp the fact that SV isn't designing this game for the masses. SOE the developer of EQ thats all they care about, so the reason for the 3rd person view is to make it more casual so the kiddies can always look at their sparklies, or their female characters ass.
I still call bullshit on the fall damage your claiming you didn't take if you slid down a cliff thats a different thing but actually falling from that height will kill you in the game.

Say what? EQ had the same animations, hell every FPS has the same types of animations so nothing new here and EQ predates this game by over a decade. EQ had crap 3rd person (F9 key for the win) and finally woke up.
Yes you can strafe, hell you have to since the keyboard mapping forces it. Doesn't everyone always run sideways? Such realism since it was what started this whole discussion.
I totally grasp that they are designing for failure if they don't design for the masses. Keep believing that a niche game will be around for long with a few thousand subs. You either adapt or die. Now since the CEO's father and friend are fronting the money for the game either one of 3 things: 1) The CEO is a spoiled rich little brat that daddy gives whatever he wants or 2) His old man will expect some return on investment so they better make a profit or 3) His father is a moron.

Man your really diggin into this, they are designing this game around a certain sense of realism they want to bring the player into the game, from what your saying is if the game wants to go for realism than it needs to be absolute realism or its shit, I mean come the fuck on if its like that go play WoW or something. How about you give realism an actual shot and go the fuck outside.
Designing for failure..... sure, if you want to compare what the games closest single player game is, Oblivion and tell me how well did that do, did it fail lol.... FPV is not going to make a game fail. Wow your a sad individual, from your way of thinking you don't do anything for yourself you just follow suit of whatever everyone else does. Ok so why does it matter if the CEO's father is fronting the money, for every gaming company starting out they have to get the money from somewhere so this arguement or whatever the hell it is, is pointless.
K im done now, arguing with you is pointless any further.
That's an incredibly stupid comment you just made. Some people don't like first person view locked MMO's. Period. They shouldn't play them and it's the risk the developers take when they choose to use such a camera view.
Could you repeat the part: "it's the risk the developers take when they choose to use such a camera view" ?
Seems to me , that if this is so risky, for example gothic series would end up on 2nd part, oblivion wouldn't be so successful,
Dont want to spoil your mood mate but every real friend i have that played oblivion played always on 3rd person ,and only when using bows on 1st cause u cant aim well in oblivion with bows from 3rd person view =]

To add a certain level of realism to games demand certain things in reality. You can strive for it but until we reach that level its impossible.
3rd person view is more realistic than 1st person with only 100 degrees viewspan and limited surround sound.
No game so far has been able to create realistic surround sound equaling that of real life and with 100 degrees viewspan the game will be like playing a half deaf and half blind person.
That is why 3rd person view is much better in MMORPGs. Not because you want to play like a "doll" but because it allows you a better view of your surrounding. Now if the devs want to prevent people to zoom out too much then they could limit that but to force you in 1st person view is just a poor decision. One that will cost them subscribers, for sure.

It's your opinion so clearly it must be fact. The entire point of first person is to allow immersion and realism in tactics and gameplay (remember, it's a PvP game or so they say). People complain about games not being innovative and keeping the same mold, then here you have people complaining that they're doing just that. Make up your minds.

That 1st person view gives you about a 100 degree view span (on a standard monitor) is not my opinion, that is a fact.
That no MMORPG has ever created a positional sound that rivals that of RL is not my opinion, that is a fact.
Beside this tired old argument that they do it for "realism" does not hold since then they would not force you into 1st person view. They are doing it so that you wont be able to see gankers sneaking up on you and that how should enhance the PvP atmosphere and that is rubbish. And that is my opinion and not a fact...

I don't know, sounds pretty factual to me along with the fact that it takes much less / lazy programming to limit you to first person only.

Naw I have a brain and can see shit when it is presented on a platter such as your favorite game to shill for; Dorkfail.
How about heading back there and writing some more sycophantic shill posts while bowing at Lord Tacos feet awaiting your weekly shillbot check?
BTW fawnboi, I would much rather work for a company that will be around in a few years like Blizz instead of a scam operation like Av.....

Yea I'm a fanboy of darkfall that is currently playing FE, MO beta, and Darkfall. That is really fanboy behavior. You have proven with every post that you don't like sandbox games. Stop trolling.
You know one of the things that , most everyone forgets in battles like this is the effects armor has on sight and sounds now if your dancing around in light leather with no neck or head protect except maybe a small skull cap then yes you can turn your head your postional vision is not effected , but put on a morden fenceing mask with neck protection and your head movement is restricted to where you have to slightly turn your body to see, now move on to chain, scale, splinted mails and half plate with a standard slited eye slot helm, you've now restricted not only your vision, but you've slowed your movements down as well and I know someone is going to say but I am big and strong, I will give you that , but even that you cannot change the law of physics, you start moving in and exrta 100 lbs of armor you don't run far stop fas , jump to high or stop drop roll and leap up balnce and ready to stop that kill shot. Go to full plate and you are down to what you see in first person and most the padding you wear under neath your armor and in your helm to pad it cuts your hearing way down. So first person is not that far off for realism and all you people that like 3rd person, i do also it's a little vanity issues, i like to watch my avatar kick butt, but the avrage person gets most of their knowledge for fighting with swords and wearing armor and what you can and can not do from books, movies and video games, and that is no where near the truth of it. Also for all of those that will say what do you know. I have fought in the SCA, actaully did jousting and trained in fence for over 30 + years I have use rattan swords, bokkans, metal blanks, actal blades for demo's, worn cloth, chain made with Iron, not the light weigh, but full 70 plus lbs full suits i have worn full suits of plate in both summer and winter, but they suck in the summer. So my point , why fight play the game if you like it, don't play if you hate , have a good discussion on the pro's and con's , but remember it's only a game in the end.

Ok supply the world with www.hexus.net/content/item.php and you can complain about 170 degree vision.
To add a certain level of realism to games demand certain things in reality. You can strive for it but until we reach that level its impossible.

Now since the CEO's father and friend are fronting the money for the game either one of 3 things: 1) The CEO is a spoiled rich little brat that daddy gives whatever he wants or 2) His old man will expect some return on investment so they better make a profit or 3) His father is a moron.

lol, ok fine, if you call those the same type of animations your feedback is hardly worth reading, video.google.com/videoplay vs www.onrpg.com/MMO/Mortal-Online/video/Mortal-Online-Beta-Video There is absolutely no head bob in everquest, Most of the spell Animations you see sparkles come onto your screen thats about it.
Don't see how anyone can stand to play oblivion in third person. It looks awful
Yeah I agree. Big part of an MMORPG is how your character looks like and be not being able to see that just seems stupid.
Damn indy developers and their wacky ideas.

It has nothing to do with lazyness...
A third person camera can be implemented in few hours as much.
The question is that MO has been developed from the start with FPV in mind. Everything has been balanced arround this feature.
They had to redo mount riding in order to make it userfriendly in FPV.
If they add TPV they will have to balance all the stuff again...
