Nethack, based off the old rogue game, ascii gfx, some of the most complex game play (no other game could u train your pet to steal stuff from the merchants), by far the most difficult rpg i have ever played (wizardry 1 comes close), and its free and sourced (so u can make your own mods)

I'm not a huge fan of RPGs that have so much reading.  I like getting into the action right away, and I found that Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic was definatly a RPG that I loved from beginning until the end... twice (Since I just had to create a light character, then redo the game again as a dark).

And if you have a Xbox, definatly get Fable.

I guess I just love RPGs where we actually do get to "roleplay" by customizing the characters how we want and our decisions changes the course of the game.  It's a shame most RPGs are not like that.

Fallout 2, Sacred and Dungeon Siege, in that order. Its sad that after so many years there still isnt an RPG that can top Fallout 2 :/

As for Morrowind, what an incredibly boring game. And the main city (forget the name, vivec?) has the worst design ever conceived.

    - The Dark Queen of Krynn(or many SSI product)

    - Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal (or many Black Isle product)

Many others nice games, like Morrowind and Bard's Tales, but, when they come clashing toward the bests, they cant help but fade in front of the nicest!  Final Fantasy COULD have turned nice, but they favorised endless boring farming(when not silly side games that are an obligation to complete) over thinking.

What I (and some others) have found with Morrowind is that for the first 20 hours or so, it's a lot of fun, the graphics don't seem to repeditive, the travel doesn't take too long (<20 minutes to reach your destination), enemies pose something of a challenge.

After a point, something snaps, and you realize that there's no challenge left in this game, and that any remaining quests you try consist of spending half an hour or more travelling across the continent to fetch some item from a dwarven ruin which is exactly the same as any of the other 50 you've already been forced to quest through.

Not speaking against it, it *is* fun for a while, but after that you grow to hate it with a burning passion.

Hehe, i wouldnt say i hate morrowind with a burning a passion and ive played it for over 50. I rarely play it anymore, but youre right, there does get to be a point where you realise its not challenging anymore.

I'm surprised Planescape: Torment got mentioned so late in this thread. It ranks high up there with fallout concerning depth of story and dialogue. Arcanum was great aswell, though it had a bad interface and combat system, the story made up for it.
Ultima 6 and 7 are also great games if you can bear with outdated graphics. There's programs for both that run them under WinXP.

Sacred, Dungeon Siege and all the other crap are NOT RPGs. ;)

  • SufinsilSufinsil Member Posts: 38

Heh , was gonna say the same, Planetscape: Torment is one of the top PC RPGs.

Might & Magic 6 and 7 if you like first person view party rpgs. Love those games. 8 was ok too, 9 bad. :(

Arx Fatalis if you want something similiar to Morrowind control style, but more linear story and areas to explore linear and confined. But fun combat and waving your hand(mouse) to cast spells.

Pretty much everything else i could think of was mentioned already. Lots of good games out there.

Planescape: Torment didnt work for me. It bored me immensely. To each his own I guess.

Bah! KotOR was too slow for me, became monotonus very quick.

awww... I agree at the beginning it is slow.  But aren't most RPGs like that?

KOTOR gets so much better after investing at least 2-3 hours into it.  Heck if you're really good even 1 hour into the game it starts to pick up.  And once the story picks up, you just can't stop.

I mean, to be honest, when I first played, I gave up when I was in the city after landing.  Because it is slow, it was a bit boring and I didn't know what to do next.  Plus I was playing Star Wars Galaxies at the same time, so I ended up putting more time into SWG.

2 weeks later, I decided to check the Walkthrough, found out what to do... and from then on, for an entire week, I did not play SWG at all... all my time was spent into KOTOR until I finished it.  Then a month later, I had to refinish it again to see the 2nd ending.

The game rocks... no one should miss out on it if you love RPGs where the choices you make, slightly affects what happens in the game.

I beat KotOR in about two/three days, worth the storyline, but not the game time in my oppinion. I've been playing Neverwinter Nights/Morrowind on quite frequent occasions since they came out (around 2002 I believe). Aside from maybe the Thief series, I dont think I've ever spent more time on a "stand alone" game (though I will admit I've spent 95% of my time online in Neverwinter, the single player campaign was a bit piss-poor in my oppinion). So if you definitally want a game you can download tons of mods for and play over and over again, I'd go for Neverwinter Nights and Morrowind, you can probably pick both up with all their expansion packs for about 20/30 bucks each.

hah. you guys are ALLLLLLL wrong. Any of the old 2d rpgs like the Final Fantasy SNES series are the best choice. ::::31:: because of the lack of graphics, the writers had to make up for it with better stories and more in depth characters. i for one have seen about enough blonde haired spikey heroes...

KoToR was a great game. But reason for my picking of the BG series to be better is a couple reasons. 1. KoToR is too short. beat it in 3 days. Took me about 2 weeks for BGII.

    2. Lack of character. It had fair amounts. But the conversations between yourself and party members, as well as inbetween party members seemed a little lacking. You didn't I suppose care as much about the character as you did in BG. (or at least in my case). Also I didn't like the whole thing of stocking up on adventurers and only being able to pull 3 out. Seemed a little artificial and odd.

    3. The expansion pack seems to have a weak storyline so far from the news. You don't play Darth Lord Revan anymore. He ran off to...Well...Who knows really. So you lose that guy as a character (or at least as the protagonist.) Instead you're replaced with some newbie last of the jedi.

The best console RPG i can think of would have to be Skies of Arcadia or Shenmue (both for dreamcast)

For computer, i'd probably say Morrowind, all though it didn't hold my attention long.

I would say Neverwinter Nights or if you own an XBOX Knights of the old Republic ::::39::
