Recently been looking at playing EQ1 and 2 for my latest MMO to play. Have played EQ2 on and off many times in the past, but only played EQ1 for about a week in 2005. EQ1 has grabbed my interest, lately, and just thought I'd check it out. Player the trial a bit, and the interface/game in general has been a bit tough for me to catch on to. What are people's opinions, is EQ1 a game that a completely new player can really get in to, or am I better off just going back to EQ2 (and hopefully hitting max level this time=P)?

Two different games, different gameplay. Minus the name and some lore, there isn't a lot of similarities. So which one you should play really should be up to what you are more interested in. You already know what EQ2 is like, so there's no mysteries there for you.
You said you were interested in EQ1, tried the trial but got mixed reaction from it. If you even saw some good things from it, and interested in seeing more, I'd say give SoD expansion a try. For one the trial in EQ1 sucks. It's in an isolated zone, haven't been updated in quite awhile, and isn't what the game is really like. It also doesn't give you access to the mercenaries, which enhances the gameplay especially the early game. So personally I would try EQ1 if you were interested in it but maybe just didn't like the trial zone.
But no guarantees you'll like the game, I can only offer suggestions, it's really up to you.

I would honestly go with EQ1 because of amount of immersion you will get. You will really care about what you do ingame. Even though you said the UI can be a bit tough, after a week or so, you will get used to it. Since you are a new player, i suggest rolling a toon on a PvE server, and not Mayongg Mistmoore. Thats a 51/50 server and you start at 51. Ask around and find a server that is well populated. I am on Maelin Starmpyre(Vazzelle) or altleast I will be when I resub in a month.
Hope this helps. Also check out Gamestop.com . They sell EQ 90 day gamecards for $19.99
Thanks for the input, guys! More likely than not I'll try out EQ1. I've heard that there are rumors of another progression server in the near future, which I think would be a lot of fun.
Good Choice. DOnt get me wrong, EQ2 is a great game but, it feels a bit odd to me because its supposed to be Everquest and its nearly nothing like it. I mean if you google/bing Drolvarg eq1 look and pics and then google/bing Drolvarg eq2 you will see what i mean. and its not only graphics, its completely different in gameplay.
