They didn't do too much that was unique. They flat out ripped off DAOC , everquest, and Asheron's call in others. Is this game a wow clone? I for one don't care. If the do away with a lot of what I dislike about WoW add some neat immersive story line elements, and give me familiar classes to play(that's right, I don't want them to make it an fps or otherwise reinvent the wheel) I will play it.
I played wow for a 8 months, and thought man if this was a bit more like eq in terms of lore(ie races, classes Mythology) i'd like it 1000 times better. Plus, Aion is in fact a typical asian time sink, and I like beer, friends, family, and actually touching a live woman once in awhile too much to play that. This game sounds perfect. I'll probably wait for the first expansion before I play though, need more than 4 classes and two races.

WoW took a ton of elements from AC2, but I don't see any of AC in WoW. If WoW did have some AC in it it might actually be a decent game.
Hadn't thought of AC2 in a long time. There was a game that totally wasted a ton of potential. I am always amazed by people that are like what's new. What do you expect to be new. for cooperative play, you need someone that can heal(call it what you want) dps, and hold agro. If everyone is dps you have a boring game or a fps. I like fairly traditional mmos and I like games that can support casual and hardcore play. I don't usually want to raid, but if I do I like it to be available.
wow, did I ramble there or what?
To me the game they directly ripped off the most was DAOC, from the character perspective to the interface.
I agree with wolf, I don't see any AC related comparison in WOW. Its a class system, the world is not fully free roam, the dungeons are static but instanced, and you are guided to the end. It pulled more from EQ then AC, and then it wrecked what it pulled from EQ and turned it into a kindergarden version of an MMO.
Most modern MMOs have practically nothing new in them, and simply improve on systems that have gone before. WoW is of course the classic example of this. I'd say the key features of WoW are the relatively slick gameplay compared to most other MMOs as well as very low system requirements.
I guess my point, such as it is, would be that for people to toss out WoW clone derisively is ironic; due to the fact that WoW was clearly a clone in nearly every aspect. I can't think of one feature in WoW that didn't appear elsewhere first.
Ironic but also true.
Basically any mmo is a clone of an earlier one. Depending on where you draw the comparisson line.
In the case of Alganon, they did not only do the same as what WoW did (copying features), but also mimicking the graphics.
I don't really care about it though, I won't scream "UNFORGIVABLE CLONING!!!", but I do understand why people say it so quickly after glimpsing Alganon.

People might be more forgiving when it would have been a better looking copy.

Ok DAoC is dead effectively now...so why is it bad that a new game comes up and rips off the game and gives it a face look if it is as good as DAoC and offers some of the new features from other games?
The rip off only works when you have the talent and money to pull it off, which blizzard did and alganon won't be able to. What blizzard did was take the best elements and improve them and make them work together wheres what alganon is doing is taking good elements but making it by not that talented people and well rather not improving it as a whole if you know what i mean.
How does WoW blow me? Let me count the ways...cough..sorry wrong topic. In anything in life, there is evolutionary steps. Was WoW great in it's day? Sure! Is it still fun? That's debatable but many like it, and God speed to your enjoyment factor! As for Alganon having the same style UI as WoW? Yep! Then again so does Aion <partially> and Champions Online, and many others! The UI has not been copyrighted, and has started to become the universal standard for games that are out, and soon to be. THIS IS A COMPLIMENT TO WOW. However, not everyone enjoys the same thing, and this game brings many, many elements that are no where near what WoW offers. I can't talk about them yet, but I will start a thread on the 26th. Until then, as Rodney King once said...Can't we all just get along? Thank you.
WoW did not introduce that interface... it was simply the most popular MMO to use it and it caught on.
Asheron's Call 2 had that interface and control scheme before WoW (click for screenshot)... and I don't think even AC2 was the first, though it was one of the earliest.

Man, I wish someone would clone daoc, lol. Mythic botched the job with warhammer and its 2 realms. A nice 3+ realm pvp game with smoother gameplay, graphics, good grouping would be great.
I think there would be less of an uproar of someone cloning a once great game that is now dead, especially if it is high quality. Mostly when people make the "wow clones", they're making lesser versions of a very popular game which is kind of pointless.
The reason people use the term 'WOW clone' isn't because it was the first but because it is the one that 30-40 million people have probably tried. It is the one that the reader's audience is most likely to be familiar with.
