PC or PS3 version what are the advantages/disadvantages?

Cant wait till this finally releases there's just one thing I just cant seem to weight up. I've got a decent spec PC that will most likely run FFXIV and considering getting a PS3 for Final Fantasy XIII.

Obviously PS3 has the advantages of portability as long as where I go has an available connection. Not having played an MMO through a console before does this have major disadvantages compared to PC?

From what I have seen this game should play awesome on a ps3 controller, what do you think?

    PS3 Pros:

    -Cheaper (now $299)

    -Comfortable control use

    -Portability (as you said)

    PS3 Cons:

    -Limited graphics, although very good

-Limited HD space, which shouldn't be a problem if you don't save to many games/files

-Although cheaper, PS3 is just that, unlike a PC where is can do multiple things.

    PC Pros:

-Graphics can be much better depending on your system

    -Helpful Windowers

    -Voice chat via Vent, ect.

-Easier Video recording (although I prefer a good camera to screen)

    PC Cons:

-No control use (although hopefully compatable)

-Price - clearly by the visuals we've seen along with features intended, you'll most likely need a pretty decent PC to play)

Those are all I could think of at the top of my head. Price seems to be the major factor.

I ended up going PC route, just because I use my computer for a lot of things and is worth an investment for a good build.

CDcosta pretty much nailed it.  Eventually I will get both versions but I will go with the PC one first.  One reason is that if they have the bazaar system again I won't feel comfortable leaving my PS3 on overnight after playing many hours prior and then playing more the next day.  I would feel more at ease with my PC doing that since it stays on 24/7 mostly.  I owned a PS3 since launch and that one gave out on me November of last year, I had to pay $250 to get a refurbish(or fix).  I don't want to go through that again.

I would remove the Limited HD Space, simply because the PS3 Hard Drive can be upgraded with any notebook HD (they currently are $80 for a 500GB space).

I will be buying the PS3 version since you will be able to use your same login for either PC or PS3. (at least it's what I was told, I think it works that same for FFXI). I can then just download FFXIV client for the PC and log in whenever I feel like it.

I have a beef with a few of your arguments.

Graphics, I honestly dont think PC will have any real noticable advantage, because I dont think SE is going to make it that way. I am betting that SE will not allow for players to  raise or lower the quality of the graphics.  I base this on how FFXI is set up. I mainly played ffxi on my ps2. Several months ago I had it on my PC on the free trial, I never found a way to make an increase to graphics on PC.  It looked the same to me on PC as it did on PS2, I look for FFXIV to be set up the same way.

Edit: but if they allow you to mess with the graphic settings then yes PC will have an advantage in the graphic dept.

PS3 is not limited on HD space. If you have a PS3 you can upgrade the HDD to a bigger one if you some how manage to fill it up . If ffxiv is massive, Ill be upgadeing myself. so saying ps3 has a limited hdd space is like saying PC is limited in HD space.

Where I think PC will have an advantage will be in massive raid situations. When I was on ps2 I had some lag issues walking through lower jueno, beseiged, dynamis, HNM camping, it wasnt nothing to sevre. Idk how high end PC users handeled it, but it couldnt have been any worse, i wouldnt think.

Edit: If your on PS3 why would you need a windower? All you do will be playing the game. I dont think thats a pro for the discussion of Ps3 vs. PC. Thats a PC mod to allow you to do other PC funtions. What other PS3 function would you be doing that you would need a windower?

Waiting for:EQ-Next, ArcheAge (not so much anymore)
    Now Playing: N/A
    Worst MMO: FFXIV
    Favorite MMO: FFXI

I honestly can't think of any reason a PS3 would be better... except you can take with you I guess... but you can also take a computer with you or your laptop.. so yeah..

I guess in the end the only really good advantage that a PC would have is the ability for one to use Vent or TS

You can drastically improve the graphics of FFXI on the PC by manipulating the texture size using registry edits. You can also force what amounts to AF/AA.

Thanks for all your advice guys the one thing that nailed it for me was the overnight bazaar trading. I do tend to leave my PC on overnight and having both PC and PS3 left on would be a bad idea. If trading will still be online required, PC is definately the choice for me.

Actually, you can use a controller in the PC, a PS3 or Xbox360 controller, depends on if you have the time to set it up.

Lol, if you have time to play an mmo, such as ffxi or ffxiv, you have time to setup your preferred control style :)

I'll be getting the PS3 version first. First and foremost SE will be optimizing FFXIV to run better on the PS3, period.

    • Any keyboard will work on the PS3
    • Any bluetooth headset will work on the PS3 (PSN)
    • HDDs are upgradable on the PS3
    • Bigger screen than the PC (in 1080p)

Plus for me leaving my PS3 on so others can use the PC without possibly screwing something up works better for me. It's in my room, my wife never goes near it, my kids use the Xbox 360 or PC and I can switch back to watching TV at anytime.
