Can't stay even somewhat interested in any MMORPGs...

I want to play an MMO but I just can’t find something that holds my interest for more then a few days and I’m not talking about hardcore gaming I’m talking about 1-2 hours a day, maybe 3-4 on weekends Most recently I played Eve and WAR which I stopped playing about the same time I hit R40. Played some WoW off and on and some GW with a little bit of FFXI and SWG mixed in there. Tried out numerous F2P games. The last time I seriously played an MMO was when I was about 18 and that was Asheron’s Call which I didn’t really get too bored of. Then I joined the Army and didn’t really have too much time to play MMOs. Now I am 25 with two kids and a full time job and an hour and 15 minute commute to work each way on a good day. I’m not sure if I can’t get into an MMO because of all the other things I’ve got going on, maybe I’ve just grown out of them, maybe there is nothing good out right now, or maybe its just some weird form of ADD. Has anyone else been experiencing these things when it comes to MMOs? This isn’t a looking for game post incase someone wants to tell me to put it there. I’m just trying to get a feel for how people in the community feel, particularly those that are in the same type of situation and demographic that I am in.

Yeah, mostly everything sucks. All the stuff you named and then some. There really isn't shit to play and most of the stuff I've seen is either weak ass wow clone or some craptastic attempt at pvp, like Darkfall.

Invest in a good single player game and wait. Maybe Mortal Online will be good, but don't go pre-ordering it or anything crazy.

I've been caught up in the "no time for anything" rut, I can only offer this advice

If there is something you like to do, you need to do it at least a couple times a week, MAKE time for it, cause if you don't make time, all the other "important" things will quickly fill that space in.

If it is playing MMO's make some time for MMO's if its sports, or just watching TV, you gotta make that time, otherwise you burn yourself out on life.

My advice would be to probably not play an MMORPG.... That's like saying Oh man i really want to eat Broccoli but I hate every kind of broccoli, will a new type of broccoli come out soon thats good? Probably not.

That exactly how I feel. I'm not really looking for an MMO to be some kind of an escape from reality and I've never been one of those people to get addicted and keep playing non stop, MMO's are just some kind of little stress relief for me for about 2 hours a day if I've got the downtime but lately nothing out there can keep me entertained for even that short amount of time.

After reading your post, I get the feeling you are looking for a immersive game which requires a lot of time investment when you can only spare so few hours a week. This is probably why you are unable to stay interested in any MMORPGs. Most of the games you have named are awesome later on but requires a lot of time investment and should you be unable to play for long enough, the game will quickly become uninteresting.

Perhaps you should look into MMORPGs  which offers a more "mission-based" approach that  fits your schedule.

While I am aware that this is not an LFG thread, I will still recommand that you give a Dungeon&Dragon Online a try. It just recently went Free To Play. Missions can take from 5-45 minutes and the whole world has that immersive feeling to it.

well man, we all evolve and grow, I'm lucky enough to still be interested in the genre as a whole, but certain games do give me that after thirty minutes I just can't play it anymore feeling. If you don't find it entertaining, there is nothing wrong with that, but I do understand the wanting it to be like it used to be feeling.

Remember being a kid and getting an ice cream cone, just not the same anymore, and it never will, thats the sad part about growing up.

I would just keep trying till you hit a winner, Or just try to find a new hobby, if you really think thats what you need.

(I hit a winner with Aion)

Yeah i agree. Im playing single player games myself now.  Plan on checking out STO and SWTOR but i dont have my hopes up.

Yeah I definitely feel you on this. I am in college and have to spend alot of time there so I don't have much time to game right now, and whatever I do play won't hold interest. And @ Jimmydean, you could say that the genre is like broccoli and it will never change but if you were to compare it to that, to me it would be more like vegetables, where there's a choice of what you want to play in the MMO genre, (the genre being vegetables) however right now it does seem to be the same in terms of gameplay.

I've experienced the same feelings for the last few years really. Played UO, EQ, DAOC, WoW, EQ2, L2, Eve, CoH, AoC, Vanguard, the list goes on. These days I look for single player RPGs to get my "fix". The only MMO in development that I will probably try is STO. Everything else I see is the "same ol' same old."  I used to be excited about Heroes Journey but that seems to be on hold indefinitely. My lack of interest in what is available has led me to consider going back to school to learn game design so I could develop the games I want to play. Pretty extreme I know, but what else is there? Good luck finding something interesting.

No game will ever be as fun and exciting as your FIRST:) AC was my first love too.

But it took me 4 other games that I didn't like to find the one I currently love. I look at it like this:

I play MMO's because the alternative is just too sucky. I can NOT revert back to watching TV every night. I've read thousands of books in my lifetime and even that past-time has lost it's luster for me. For 20 years, I went to the library once a week and come home with 7-10 books. Week after week and yr after yr. And then God gave us the internet!!!!! Hallejeulia!!!

These games give us a wonderful choice in entertainment and I will keep playing them until I'm arthritic. My brain NEEDS more stimulation than TV and books can provide. And my OCD needs something to focus on and these games are perfect for ppl that like to obsess and fixate on things.

My suggestion is to try every game you can and I am confident  you will find one that you enjoy. No game will EVER be as exciting as your first was but you will find one that you like logging into. Playing ANY game is better than watching TV on the couch every evening! Better for your brain:)

P.S. what server on AC? I was on Harvestgain from 2003-2007

Fallen Earth is probably the best mmo this year but unfortunately it is made my an Indie developer who is probably strapped for cash and it will take awhile before they actually fix issues. I'm holding out until Guild Wars2 and The Old Republic gets here. Until that time I will be playing the heck out of Borderlands, Dragon Age and Left 4 Dead 2 !

    This is very good advice.

You have to spend some of your time doing what you WANT to do. It doesn't matter what it is, just that it is what you want.

     I feel the same way.

DAoC, AC, UO, and SB were so much fun I cannot find a decent replacement for them.  Everything seems so watered down in comparison, all seemingly catering to folks who want to be held by the hand rather than using the grey matter between their ears.

The above are still available if you feel so inclined.  Just keep in mind the reduced populations and second gen graphics may deter you, but if your like me, content rather than eye candy is what I prefer in a MMOrpg.

EDIT:  Actually DAOC is the only MMO listed above thats second gen graphix, along with the original Everfish, err, EverQuest .  The others are lumped in with UO.  Poor graphix, great content.

You're not alone, nearly all of my friends and fellow players still suffer from DAoC withdrawls.

My problem is, I'm more interested in the idea of MMOs than I am in the actual MMOs themselves.  I feel there could be a truly amazing game if anyone bothered to do it right, but no one does.  As such, I'm not playing much these days, I look at one now and then and discover they're doing it "wrong" too and don't bother.

Played: UO, EQ, WoW, DDO, SWG, AO, CoH, EvE, TR, AoC, GW, GA, Aion, Allods, lots more
Relatively Recently (Re)Played: HL2 (all), Halo (PC, all), Batman:AA; AC, ME, BS, DA, FO3, DS, Doom (all), LFD1&2, KOTOR, Portal 1&2, Blink, Elder Scrolls (all), lots more
    Now Playing: None
    Hope: None

Im thinking of going back to an Atlantis server, rolling a necro farmer and setting myself up, just so I can see what I can accomplish.  Hmmm....

You could give EQ a try.

I play on the EQEmu server "The Grad Creation," which is currently on the LoY expansion.  It's completely free, except for the game client, which you will need to purchase.  You could just torrent that, though ; )

The problem is there are not any "true" MMORPG's out at the moment; not new ones, anyway. What we have is a series of multi-user single player games that feed players "story" instead of "game world".  If you were to take away the hotkey bar, these MMO's would play out like a static and linear book; very dull and contrived.  And LOTRO is the worst offender of the bunch.

Anyhow, i recently resubbed to EQ, knowing it would be empty and it pretty much was.  What I did realize (and perhaps have realized all along) is that EQ still had a "world", but unfortunately no polish.  WOW, in contrast, has excellent polish, but no "world"; just a "themepark."

Whatever new MMO comes out, I do hope the first point of order for the dev's is to create a "world" and not another linear themepark story.  The reason there is no WOW-killer or another (true) EQ is that dev's keeping cranking out the linear themeparks.
